Luke Live in Palatine IL

Postby LtVanish » Wed Aug 20, 2008 12:42 am

I went to the show last night in Palatine and boy oh boy was it excellent. I was a little nervous a few days ago when I heard that the last 3 shows were cancelled due to Luke coming down with a throat infection. During the show you could tell he was still a little under the weather, but he was in good spirits. His band is excellent and you can tell they were all having a blast. "Hold on a sec while I go backstage and set all the pro-tools" Luke joked....."As you can see everything but my prosthetic penis is real up here on stage" Luke also cleared up all the Toto stuff by saying that he wishes nothing but the best for everyone and that those days were the best of times. He compared it to having a child at the age of 50 being different than having a child at 20. As for everything else that was going on it still hasn't completely sunk in, I was in awe last night watching Luke tear it up. He seemed very touched with the crowd that showed up, and after chanting Luke Luke Luke for 3-4 mins he came back out for a second Encore, this time by himself and finished the night with "The Road Goes On" Here is the set list for the night

Drive A Crooked Road
Twist The Knife
Ever Changing Times
Live for Today
How Many Zeros
Stab in the Back
Hate Everything About You
Song For Jeff
Fall Into Velvet
Never Walk Alone
Talk to Ya Later (Tubes)
Tell Me What You Want
Party in Simon's Pants (with dedication to Simon Phillips)
Jammin' with Jesus
Wings of Time
Hero With 1000 Eyes

Encore:
Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Road Goes On

I did take some pictures and I will post them later on.

Thanks for the setlist and review man. I too am disappointed to see that The Letting Go is absent. I really would have loved to see the entire album. I'm going Friday. I hope he slips I Am or The Letting Go into the set Friday.

Moon Beam I will certainly have that review :)

I'm also surprised he didn't play New World... that track is easily top 3 MR songs of 2008 so far for me. What a great song.

Was an absolute blast......

Took Frankie Sullivan with me to the show, and he was really blown away.....I brought him backstage and it was cool to see my two favorite players (and Guys) together talking shop.....it was a mutual admiration society back there...man these guys have gotten around....

It was my son's first real concert (indoors) and he had a great time, combine that with the lunch we had with Luke earlier in the day and it was a day Joey will never forget....

I found the show to be highly entertaining and the things that stuck out BESIDES Luke were the background vocals (f'n spot on, 4 guys doing the backgrounds) and the tightness of the band as a whole....Toto were/is a great band, but this band is actually tighter musically than the last incarnation of Toto over the past few years....I do not say that lightly as I am a huge Toto fan, but this new band Luke has is absolutely amazing......YOU HAVE TO SEE THEM!!!!

The choice of tunes was risky yet the crowd LOVED it....Hell, they did not want to leave...and screamed for 2 encores.....he completely sucked everyone in last night.....

Vocally Luke was great and his playing was top notch as usual.....his phrasing was especially good last night, he moved a few melodies around and it really worked well.....

This band would be an amazing band to open for a Journey/Styx/Cheap Trick....except the headliner might get worried they will be blown off the stage by the mountain of tone and groove they would have to follow.....

Luke takes a "back seat" to NO ONE in the rock/pop genre.

Now if only he'd play anywhere near me. Moving to Nashville has been an adventure and i'm glad i went, but it fucking licks balls how touring acts avoid it like the plague. :(

What was the crowd like? At all comparable to the couple of Toto shows in Chicago last year?

Toto is a worldwide brand....they will always sell more tix...but the energy level of this band was higher than the last incarnations of Toto that i saw over the past 3 or 4 years.....the people that were there were hardcore, and were there to see a master of his instrument, not hear Rosanna or Africa....

It was alot of fun......

I'm sure people going out to see Mr. Lukather are getting their "money's worth" and then some!

Wish he'd come near my home... :(
