Iron Maiden Classic Album

Postby chowhall » Sat Sep 13, 2008 12:24 pm

How does a band like Iron Maiden have an album on VH1 Classic's "Classic Albums" and Styx does not? I'm not a fan of Iron Maiden or even that familiar with them, so I'm not trying to overtly bash them, but shouldn't Styx have GI or RTP as an entry in this series? Maybe it has to do with the band's agreement to be in this show, which obviously the past and present members of Styx would have an issue with. I think many 40 somethings listened to GI and POE and would grant them classic status. Folks on the verge of 40 would probably think RTP would fit in this category.

I'm not comparing Styx's work to the White Album, but I think they certainly compare with the number of the beast or whatever it's called. The boys deserve better.

I have long wished for Styx to have an entry in this series devoted to "The Grand Illusion." There are many of these classic album programs being shown on VH1 Classic (and available on DVD), and I have found all the ones I have seen fascinating.

They managed to pull off an excellent one about "Dark Side of the Moon" with interviews with all (or most) participants, including Waters and Gilmour, done, of course, separately (and probably on separate continents, LOL.)

I would think if they could pull that one off, they could manage one with Styx interviews as well.

I thought this exact same thing as I watched the Metallica one last night. I would pick Grand Illusion as the album, I was very young during that time frame, and not paying attention to sales figures, but was/is Grand Illusion the selling monster that the black album was? They say it still sells a million copies a year which baffles me cause who's buying it, doesn't everyone already own it.

My thoughts were also on how would they do the interviews, not as a group of course, but I think they could do it. I also watch the Def Lep one each time it is on. I find these fascinating and the recording process very interesting.

On a humorous note, as I watched the Metallica one last night I thought maybe someone should put JY, Tommy and Dennis in a room with that therapist that Metallica used and see what happens. Maybe we could get some new music out of them. (but would it then be the dud that St. Anger was? maybe not such a good idea after all)

Well GI has maybe sold 4-6 million worldwide, where as the Black album has sold 15-20 worldwide.

Actually, St. Anger sold 6 million copies worldwide.. If thats considered a flop, I'm sure most bands would kill to have "flops" like that!

Iron Maiden is deserving. They are probably the best metal band that has ever existed. They have two albums you could pick. Personally I like Piece of Mind.

Not overtly trying to dis Iron Maiden. I am ignorant of most of their music. I just think Styx is as deserving or more so than a band with a pretty narrow focus and appeal.

Chow,

I think it may be the fact that, internationally, Maiden is very huge. They are more well known across the globe than Styx, as is Metallica, Pink Floyd, Def Lep & Queen (all of those bands have a Classic Albums show). But yes, would love to see a show on GI or PT.

Was pissed last night because my guide channel said Maiden in Rio and I turned it on and it was Metallica. Then it said AC/DC and it was still Metallica so I missed 'em both... Don't care for Metallica after "Justice For All".

Iron Maiden still plays to crowds of 20,000+
As much as I love Styx, they couldn't do that- not even with DeYoung

Styx never pulled 20000 a night in their heyday. They may have done that as part of a big show with other groups. I just don't recall seeing Iron Maiden as one of the top grossing tours. With those kind of numbers they'd be in the top 3.

I don't recall seeing Iron Maiden in the Top 3 either. Styx is usually in the top 100 somewhere.

Yo Chow,

What the heck does dis mean??

You need to move over to Britneys website.

You make a good argument, then in a later post you try to get modern and used the word dis.

Next you hammer Froy with a 'TOTALLY' lame (took you 3 days to think up) cheapshot about his parents.

'Dis' plus the Froy 'Assembly Line' ought to eliminate you from this website. Still, on second thought you are not quite modern or 'hip' enough for Britney.

Upon further review you qualify as a Spice Girl or Wham type person.

That's who you are!!

All this time 'youve been searching for yourself' and Ive found ya.

You are a definate Spice Girl or Wham poster.

Try www.spiceworld.com or www.carelesswhisper.org

Enjoy the ride!!!

In my opinion, Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" is a masterpiece. That being said, Styx definitely has several albums that I would also consider masterpieces.
It's not a lie, if you believe it..........

Yea man thats lame, How can they leave out STYX?

From 1977 to 1981, Styx released four consecutive albums that have been certified Multi-Platinum (signifying at least 2 million units sold) by the RIAA: The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone, and Paradise Theatre. [2]. They were the first band recognized to have achieved this feat when the RIAA began certifying Multi-Platinum albums in 1984.

A longstanding, oft-repeated claim in the music industry and the mainstream press is that Styx were the first band to release four consecutive triple-platinum albums, signifying at least 3 million units sold. [3][4][5][6][7][8] However, prior to 1999, the RIAA's only certifications were for Gold (500,000 units sold), Platinum (1 million), and Multi-Platinum (2 million) albums.[9] Complete and detailed historical sales figures for record albums are not readily available to the public. However, per the latest information on the RIAA searchable database, Styx did score three triple-platinum albums on the same date: November 14, 1984. They achieved one double-platinum album on August 23, 2005.

Ahhh... I don't know, maybe they wern't just counting past album sales, maybe they factored in how many people wanted to listen to STYX today?
