Jeff Babko...

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Wed Jan 07, 2009 2:20 am

As the first fill-in for Paich, anyone know if Babko was ever considered as being his full time replacement?
If he was in the running, these TOTO clips go a long way explaining why...

Only problem is, as good as Greg (or Babko) is, when you replace Paich, you're not so much losing a keyboardist, as losing the band's lyrical braintrust.

Jeff is a killer player (seen him play at the Baked Potato, and during a couple of the 'Doves of Fire' gigs), and a natural fit for the band, on keys. Not sure if he is singing Paich's parts. Anyone know if he did during this tour (i.e. Africa?)

Obviously Paich's 'braintrust' was present on FIB....Paich just doesn't like to tour that much anymore.

Great vids (looks and sounds live to me BTW), love the double-time 'boogie' shuffle towards the end. Didn't know there were pro-shot shows from this tour. Must be a ton of stuff in the vaults...haha. Thanks for posting.

Wow, I didn't know anyone else had replaced Paich on tour. I wonder if that show is floating around on DVD somewhere...hmm...

Here is Africa from 2000 with Jeff Babko:

Bobby Kimball is singing Paich's parts, apparently with some help from JJ. Tony Spinner is doing the high harmonies. Luke and Babko add parts on the chorus. Vocals appear to be live. Bobby sounds horrible just after 4:00.

The chorus may be supplemented with Spinner helping out, but that is the same playback they've used since Bobby rejoined.
Like the recent Falling in Between Live release, Bobby sings some of Dave/Greg's parts, and goes full bore on the "bless the rains" tail-end part.
Same deal as the Live in Amsterdam release.
Even when Bobby is having a good night, "Africa" is always playback.

Also weird that JJ is onstage...all the other footage I've seen from shows he did, he was presumably locked in a cage behind the stage or something.
