It's always hard to decipher who was a band's most important member, but from a lay person's prespective and the fact that I have lived in the city of Chicago every day of my life, I would have to say that Dennis DeYoung was the group's most important contributor. That's not to diminish the talents of Tommy Shaw, but I think Dennis and Tommy were far and away the heart of the band ... with a slight advantage to Dennis. He was the voice behind the band's "signature" sound.

All I knew about the band was De Young's voice on Babe, Lady, etc from the radio. But having followed what they're up to since 90s reunited and breaking up and coming to enjoy all their music they've made as a band, I would go see Styx with Gowan b/f De Young solo, if I had to absolutely choose between them. But I would see both and just be glad they're both still making music, all talented musicians. De Young came to Florida and sang acapella in studio at a radio station maybe six years ago or so. His voice was utterly amazing, especially for so early in the morning.

In 2009 Modern Drummer Magazine voted him the number one "Rock Drummer" in the world.
