Grand Illusion Gold Cd?

Postby LtVanish » Wed Apr 07, 2010 7:41 pm

Looks like Grand Illusion will be released on a gold cd in a few weeks. Does anyone know about this?

As far as I know, this still isn't remastered. I am still dissappointed they axed the 2 disc set several years ago... Bad move on Universal's part. (Dsic 2 was supposed to be a live show from 1977.) I'll be passing on this one.

It's says it is mastered by Kevin Gray, what is the difference from mastered and remastered?

100% incorrect. This is remastered. Audio Fidelity is the modern version of DCC (well, you get the idea) and similar to Mobile Fidelity. Universal licensed GI to AF to do this release.

This is a new mastering, hence this being a remaster (but not remastered by A&M/Uni). The mastering person is Kevin Gray, hence mastered by him.

A remastering job/remaster is when you re-release an album in its original mix but with a new mastering job. So the original vinyl is considered the original master, and the original CD version is the original CD mastering job. The SHM and this AF release are remasters.

24K Gold CD's

Postby Mr JY Roboto » Thu Apr 08, 2010 1:06 pm

Our 24K+ compact discs reproduce the ultimate sound of a classic recorded performance without the irregular plated surfaces of standard aluminum discs. Our 24K+ series brings you classic music in deluxe packaging with see-through slip cases. We only use the master mix played back on a specially constructed playback deck. Here's where the PLUS comes in: The analog masters are put through our new proprietary analog to digital converter which reinforces the resolution of the original masters adding true "breath of life" to the music. Without any further sonic manipulation the master is shipped directly to the manufacturing plant for etching in "real time" onto the glass surface by laser. The end result of this unique mastering process is a compact disc with the warm sound of the original analog master tape combined with a genuine 24 karat gold surface free of any type of physical defect making our 24K Gold CD series truly one of a kind.

The original dynamic range of the recordings are not maximized, brickwalled, limited or compressed in any way during remastering.

Which version of 'Man In The Wilderness' do we get?

The one that Dennis chopped by 13 seconds or the one that Tommy put on Styx Greatest Hits Volume 179 that included the additional 13 seconds????

I have a Gold VINYL version of this album and Pieces of 8. Not sure where I picked those up at.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

My bad it was 19 seconds, and Tommy was no longer dying of thirst in the middle of the ocean.

The one minute version is NOT sanctioned by the band.

It was a demo for MS Funk and it was found on the Millenium Collection. Dennis ( Your Hero) had no say in the songs selected for this CD.

During the one minute nineteen second add on to the song Man In The Wilderness Tommy is found eating a Big Mac in the middle of the ocean. Tommy had recorded this version for his former band but Dennis nixed Tommy's orginal lyrics and instead had Tommy dying of thist in the middle of the ocean. The added time from the MS Funk recording was Tommy describing the actual ingredients found in a Big Mac.

Dennis did the same thing an album earlier with Tommy's songs Crystal Ball and Mademoiselle.

After knowing these facts its a wonder DDY lasted as long as he did in the band.

You can order Tommy's MS Funk songs by going to www.msfunk.com

I really hope Pieces of Eight gets the gold treatment as well, at least these albums are finally getting some attention.

Next will be Paradise Theatre not PO8. Pretty much accepted that the 2 classic Styx albums are GI and PT. If they decide to click a level below, it will be Po8 and. Cornerstone and Kilroy. Then if theu click down another level it will be Edge, Equinox, and CB.

Pieces of Eight is overblown and a poor imitation of Grand Illusion. Time for that type of music was gone. PT a better album, conceptually, musically, and better songwriting.

I am with ya on this, Froy. I actually rate Equinox highest, just for sheer enjoyment and great music throughout. POE is second on my list. GI third.

While it may be marketing, it's a different mastering job. It may be better, it may be worse, but it won't be the same.

I think they ought to continue to do the Gold CD's but hook up with RCA and do the cartoon covers with them. Who wouldnt love to see the cartoon covers for The Grand Illusion, Pieces Of Eight, Paradise Theatre, etc......

The only way I purchase the gold CD's is if they have the cartoon covers!!!

Will sales of this count toward RIAA status on top of the existing Grand Illusion sales? Or will it start all over? If hope it is the former - it would be great to get one of these Styx albums past 3x platinum...
