I went to the RTP show 2 times. In Knoxville and Nashville. Both outdoor venues and they were pretty darn crowded. For some reason they did not use the "back screen" during the Knoxville show so visually the Nashville show was better. Dennis had some sound issues in Nashville and would become visually frustrated and even call gary out on his mic.

I went to both the 96 and 97 tours. I have crappy pictures from the 97 show, I'll have to find them. Since both of the shows that I've seen were in Milwaukee, they were great shows like usual. Everytime Styx or DDY plays in Milwaukee they usually have great crowds and the band has always been pumped up.

It started out like they were about to do the Return To Paradise show and then they kind of acknowledged they had made a mistake and they went into The Grand Illusion show. If I remember correctly Tommy & JY first appeared coming out of some sort of exploding boxes. They also performed On My Way which was AWESOME!!!!

P.S. As was Tom Jones last night, Dennis performed this concert as a black man.

Both were outdoor venues and were an absolute sea of people. I'd never seen what was called "Starwood" so full for any concert I'd ever been to there.

On the 97 tour they played all 3 studio tracks from RTP album. I saw the 96 tour 3 times, Tinley Park IL, Peoria IL and at the Rosemont Horizon where they filmed the DVD. All three shows were packed, as close to a sell out as can be. The 97 tour had good crowds too.

I went to several of these shows. I've mentioned before that I have seen Styx live every tour from 1975 through 1997.
Some of the early 70's shows were the greatest concerts ever. Especially when they were opening up for bands and blowing them off the stage. I witnessed that many times.
But I have to say my favorite shows of all time were both the 1996 and 1997 ones.
I cannot remember how many times I saw them on the 96 and 97 tours, but some of cities I went to were Concord, Clear Lake, Los Angeles,
Paso Robles, Las Vegas, Reno, Portland and Seattle. All the shows I went to were Packed. There was a buzz in the air at every single one of the 1996 shows I was at.

I went to both shows at Pine Knob (DTE) in Clarkston, Mi. I remember the RTP tour show was the night the Wings won the Cup against the Flyers.

I remember that both sides of the lawn seating was completely packed. The hill facing away from the stage was packed with people who could only hear the show. Unbelievably packed, never saw it that packed before or since.

i saw both shows a couple of times each tour......every single time it was packed and great crowd response. i saw them in Indy in 96 and there was over 23,000 people there......because they announced it was the largest crowd of the season that year even out drawing Lollalpoolooza (sp?).......it was amazing to see so many people rocking out to my favorite band.....amazing stuff.

the 97 tour was also great as i really enjoyed hearing on my way and dear john. plus they did a short version of lights during the acoustic set if i remember correctly.

My advice would be, go through the emotions and get yourself to acceptance as quickly as possible.

i was 5th row in Cincy and 8th row in Indy and both were incredible.....yes they pretty much followed the same order of the setlist live as they put together for the video........there was no intermission prior to boat on the river just a quick change over and moving of stage props......i do remember that when they got done and went back to electric instruments they played the beginning of "light up' thru the PA while the stage hands were changing things over.....it was prerecorded of course but still kind of cool.

Like Lt. Vanish, I saw the Tinley Park, Peoria, and Chicago (and thus the concert video recording) shows in '96, as well as Milwaukee and Nashville. I will agree with the masses... great shows and well-attended. Huge crowds! (This is the first time I saw a band's show multiple times on a single tour, and realized everything right down to the stage banter and the chit-chat with the audience is rehearsed. Everything down to the last casual off-handed comment or gag was word-for-word. LOL)

Just saw them once in '97, which was also a great show. Worth it for Queen of Spades live and the 3 new cuts from RTP, alone!

yeah, Ash, we were at the same show. The Starwood. I was by myself on the lawn because my wife had class the next morning at UT in Knoxville. That's the one where Dennis called out Gary about his sound. Other than that it was an awesome show. I don't remember any noticeable sound problems from an audience stand point.

As far as I remember the set list is just like RTP minus "Little Suzie". Dennis did mention GH Part 2 during the show. As for the "unplugged" part of the show I remember the lights going down and the intro to "Light Up" was playing. This was either before or after "Boat On The River". I seem to remember them doing snippets of other songs too. But if you have seen the RTP DVD then that is basically what you got, minus Little Suzie.... Thinking about it some more after "Show Me The Way" Tommy said "Yeah, I wrote that song!". Then I think that is when he got out his mandolin and they started talking about Dennis's organ... They played "Boat On The River" and introduced the "new kid" Todd and he had a hand held video camera he was filming with.

The shows I saw, John was still alive and there was buzz in the air among the fans that he might return.

Went up to Atlanta and saw them with The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Chastain Park. Great Show. Completely sold out. A few interesting tidbits

- It was in the middle of the summer and doesn't get dark in Atlanta until almost 9pm. The venue they played at is in the middle of a neighborhood and requires all acts to be done by 11pm, so they had to start the show in broad daylight. Dennis's comment "We would have liked to start this later when it was dark, but clearly the sun never sets on Atlanta."

- Styx played like 5 or 6 songs before the symphony came out and then as the symphony was getting set up, they Tommy played an acoustic number on his guitar

- Once the symphony was set up, Styx left the stage and the symphony did a medley of Styx songs - it was beautiful (SMTW, Pieces of Eight, Fooling Yourself) were a few that came to mind.

- The band then came back out and finished the set list - 14-15 songs or so. The acoustic set came right after a full fledged version of Show Me The Way with the orchestra and if I can recall right after SMTW was done, Tommy did say something like, "Yeah I really enjoyed writing that song." Then JY in his preacher voice said, "Tommy Shaw thou shalt not lie...." and then light back on Tommy and his guitar has "turned" into a mandolin...Then light pans on Dennis with his according and he says, "oh no Tommy....my organ shrunk!"....pretty funny and pretty typical Styx humor.

- They clearly were enjoying themselves that night - oh how I wish that Atlanta show with the ASO had been recorded....

I saw the '96 show in Madison, WI the night before Rosemont. It was a late addition to the tour and was not very well attended. I'd say the arena was about 2/3 full. They also didn't play about 2 or 3 songs that were on the DVD.
