Gowan puts in a nice performance. No hate from me. Like it a lot.

DDY is better vocally, but this is good.

I realize everybody has the right to do what they want, but why post this??? Especially now. His voice isn't right for any of Dennis' songs. Time and time again I have said that he doesn't sing in the right key. The only thing that's good is the music... and hey guess what everybody, Dennis wrote this song.

THANK YOU for posting this. I get so tired of certain people spending their entire day searching the entire internet for just ONE example of Gowan having a bad night (who knows, maybe he was even sick that night)...when there are videos such as this, proving the man has a place in this band and is very talented.

Agreed...Dennis is the better singer....but Gowan is very good, and sings this song very well.

Also...thanks cause you linking this, helped me find this...and I LOVE this song ----> ....great performance of it also... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llcJ49sg ... re=related

And....so what if Dennis wrote it? I see people bash Styx for performing DDY songs on tour...but funny enough, no one...not a single person seems to care that DDDY is performing Tommy's songs in his live shows. The guy singing in DDY's band isn't as good a singer as Tommy....he's good...but not as good. But no one rips him or DDY apart for performing them....but they will be hypocritical and fault Styx for performing DDY's songs.

For discussion.

I'm going to see DDY on Friday and am a huge fan.

Not dissing him or Styx. They can't get along, and are in their 60's or pushing it. No reunion. Don't care. I only hate JY.

By the way Christopher, your artwork is amazing. I've "borrowed" some of it for some of my personal bootleg CD's - nothing I have ever distributed though of course.

I see no problem with people posting subjects that are pro or con. If everyone here was of the same opinion I feel the forum would be quite boring. As far as Gowan performing DDY songs, I don't care for his renditions of Dennis' material. It does nothing for me and I just feel he is not suited for it. I would not say that Gowan is talent-less though. In fact one song I have liked of his is Criminal Mind.

To say that no one has said anything against DDY having a TS sound alike singing TS songs. I have said that I don't care for bands using a sound alike, including DDY. I feel that both the current Styx and DDY have the right to perform any of the Styx material they want. Tommy, JY and Dennis were all involved in the original performances of that material. To say that either camp should or shouldn't is like splitting hairs to me. It has nothing to with whether I do or don't like the performances.

Criminal Mind is a brilliant song, I agree...and would love for Syx to record it in the studio.

I see no problem posting pro/con either....but some on here post the con about the current Styx lineup so much, that it's becomes old almost immediately....so I was surprised that anyone would challenge that a positive thread was posted about the current lineup, whiel showing a live video from it.

I think wrong key is the incorrect way of putting it. There is no way an act would let a singer who is always singing the wrong notes stick around.

This is the first clip where I saw Todd singing. Didn't know he did that. When did that start?

Or it could be they just adapt to cover his weaknesses in his job. Case and point, his performance of Rockin the Paradise and Best of Times. They don't play those at all anymore. I have heard him perform those more then once and it wasn't just an off night for him. If that was the case then he had a lot of off nights.

I am not making an argument for or against him. Saying he is singing in the wrong key is just incorrect. Everybody hits a clam here and there, but his singing of those two songs mentioned is in key. His delivery is just remarkably different that DDY's. I have not figured out why he handled those songs so differently.

Well it could be because he is trying not to exactly copy DDY's style of delivery. That is one of the issues that I have with him. I am not saying that he is not talented in his own way it's just I don't care for his renditions of DDY's material. After hearing him perform Rockin' the Paradise and Best of Times several times, I kinda scratched my head and thought why did they pick this guy to sing DDY's songs. I could not believe that JY and Tommy could say that his delivery of that stuff was even in the same ballpark of Dennis.

This is the first clip where I saw Todd singing. Didn't know he did that. When did that start?

I actually commend Styx for not picking a sound-a-like singer to replace DDY. In 1999 Tommy gave an interview stating that they auditioned a guy for that spot who sounded exactly like Dennis, but he did not play any instruments and they thought that was not a good fit. With that said, as a replacement for the classic material Gowan needs to sing the songs as intended. When he does that I have no complaints with him. I love the songs he brought to Cyclorama. This rendition of Suite Madame Blue is awesome and makes me want to go see them.

I can agree it was a good idea for them not to pick a sound alike to Dennis. I chuckle when I hear some people comment that Gowan sounds close to DDY. I will say that I think he has been fairly respectful to the material itself. I just don't think his voice is a good match for it. One bone I have to pick with DDY is him adding a sound alike to his band. I understand it but, I don't feel he needed to do that. To each his own though.

I'm so glad that DDY added August to his band. You're getting a great Styx experience with splendid vocal harmonies and the original voice for the really big hits. Dennis's act is the best value by far for a Styx fan.

Don't get me wrong, in general I think the revamp Dennis did to his band was the right thing to improve his show. It also seemed to give him a "shot in the arm". August is a very talented person. I just look at it from the point of view that Dennis' work (STYX\Solo) stands on it's own enough that by itself it makes a excellent show. But, I get why hid did what he did.

I think neither band should perform songs they didn't at least have a hand in the writing of.
