Having young talent is an enormous key to continued success in the NFL, but it isn't the only thing that matters.

That is the wording we'd use to describe the fact that 2010's No. 1 team in our U-25 organizational rankings, the Houston Texans, went 6-10 that season. It also helps explain the debacle that was the 2011 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, our first-place team in 2011. Both teams came into the season with high expectations and both teams flopped miserably due to poor luck, injury attrition and, in Tampa's case last season, essentially quitting on their coach.

Remember that these rankings represent nothing more than a snapshot in time. If there's anything the regression-analysis we mainly dabble in shows us, it's that what goes up may eventually come down. With that in mind, we'd like to offer our sincere condolences to fans of the AFC team that is No. 1 this year in the event that the No. 1 slot on this list becomes a hex of some sort.

Here are the criteria we used to come up with our rankings:

• The number of games in 2011 started by players under the age of 25
• Whether or not a team's young starters last season were simply injury replacements
• The number of 25-or-younger first-team All-Pros a team has on its roster
• The extent to which a team's 25-and-under talent plays impact positions in the passing game
• Whether or not a team has a talented, young quarterback
• The amount of value a team added in the 2012 draft
• A team's recent track record of developing and retaining young talent

Once we had our objective rankings, discussion amongst the crew at Football Outsiders tweaked the list resulting in the final version that you see below.

The turnover on this list, from year to year, is staggering. While it goes without saying that football is a young man's game, it's also the sport where injury attrition is the worst for young players. Having young stars is an important thing in the NFL, but with most players able to stay on the list for only three or four NFL seasons, lists of organizational talent will shift dramatically based on recent draft pools.

You'll see a number of references to Football Outsiders stats on our list, in particular DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average), which takes every play and compares its success to the NFL average based on situation and opponent. You can read more about that and other FO stats on this page.

Without further ado, here are our organizational rankings for this season. (Note: All ages are as of Sept. 8, 2012.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. New England Patriots

Truth be told, our statistical analysis last year said the Patriots had the best 25-and-under talent in 2011, but we went with our gut instead. Lesson learned. New England had 15 significant contributors last season who qualify this season as well, but we really need only to discuss the three who helped produce the No. 3 offensive DVOA in the league. If you can believe it, tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez are still only 23 years old. Whether we look at standard or advanced stats, Gronkowski had a record-setting season: He was the first tight end ever to lead the NFL in receiving touchdowns, and also had the best receiving DYAR (defense-adjusted yards above replacement) for any tight end since 1991. To put the latter in perspective, the second-through-fourth-best tight end seasons were clustered at 357 or 358 DYAR; Gronkowski beat that by about 100 (459).

Of course, lest we forget Hernandez in New England's double-shot of matchup nightmares; he led all tight ends by breaking 21 tackles and he actually carried the ball 11 times in the team's final five games. Nate Solder (24) helped make huge tight end seasons possible by giving up only 2.5 blown-block sacks in his rookie year. With the retirement of Matt Light, Solder will switch from right tackle to left tackle, further increasing his value.

Finally, the Patriots added LB Dont'a Hightower (22) and DE Chandler Jones (22) in the draft, both of whom should contribute this season and in the future.

Times are good in New England.

Why shouldn't they be? Listen, every team in the NFL is vulnerable. That said, last I checked, their defense was fucking PUTRID last season (And the Giants defense wasn't much better), and they were still the AFC representative in The Super Bowl! As long as Brady and Belichick are in New England, I'll take my chances.

Pretty much. I've said that for years and it's pretty much the standard within league expectations. Won't surprise the least bit to see New England head to Super Bowl 47. AFC has been pretty predictable over the years and I don't see it changing whatsoever. New England and Pittsburgh are the class (in the current era, it's all about quarterbacks. Right now, it's Brady-A and Roethlisberger-B in the AFC) with teams like Baltimore, Houston, San Diego and now Denver with Manning on the cusp of trying to edge another QB as an AFC representative in the Super Bowl other than Tom Brady or Ben Roethlisberger.

Flacco got close in a year where it was Baltimore's destiny. Manning has already been to two Super Bowls but his health is still on the line, especially missing an entire football season. Rivers showed glimpses of greatness at times but failed miserably to lead his team to anything last season and Matt Shaub is still second-tier quarterback coming off of an injury. If I had to pick a new faced QB in the AFC as a pure quarterback and package, it would be Rivers.

Brady went up against one of, if not, the most fierce defense in the entire league . New England's defense was SWISS CHEESE. Everybody and anybody threw on them last season. I still remember a pivotal part in the AFC TITLE game, one where Flacco just CAN'T SHAKE and makes him the Tony Romo of the AFC. Late in the game, Baltimore driving, Flacco threw an interception in the middle of the field RIGHT to Jarrod Mayo.

Flacco is simply good at fucking up at the wrong place at the wrong time and that pick was a HUGE shift in Baltimore's fortunes. Of course, that last drive Flacco put the ball to where it needed to be, but as good of a throw as it was, Lee Evans did NOT drop that ball in the endzone. It was simply PERFECT football instinct by Sterling Moore to bat away the game-winning touchdown. In fact, he made 2 breakups that forced Baltimore to settle for the tie and field goal. We all know what happened next. But what the FUCK do I know, we got Tebow'd for Christ sake.

Brady DID get outshined by Flacco in that game. D?? It was a COMPLETE mismatch....but the Ravens should have their 2nd ring right now.

Ask most Shitsburgh fans about their history. 8 times out of 10, they won't know it.

I don't concern myself with fans who lack knowledge of history, that's their problem (I always acknowledge our history. Very prideful. So much, that Matt one time used it AGAINST me saying I wasn't even born during the Steelers first 4 Super Bowls so I don't have the right to celebrate them. Which is it haters? LOL.)

If you ask me, if Dallas fans think their moniker is "America's Team" (LOL) then they are, by FAR, the league leading fanbase when it comes to fairweather & it's not even CLOSE. Cowboys fans are the most hysterical. They truly embody the definition of "Jerry's World."

That said, true Steelers fans are quite intelligent. I know the Steelers history, especially against Dallas. They are tied in Super Bowl appearances with 8. The Steelers overall record against Dallas in Super Bowls is 2-1 while the Steelers have a 1 trophy lead over Dallas with 6 as the team with the most Lombardi's. I also know every Steelers play, score and roster ever since I can remember. Maybe I can tutor "fairweather" fans. They won't leave disappointed.

BTW, great video. I LOVED this comment:

All the 90s Dallas Cowboys fair weather fans are now Steelers fans everyone should get this by now...

This Cowboys fan has never faltered. And that thing I posted was just for laughs. I figured YOU knew your history. Anyway...as far as the 90's Cowboys fans now being Steelers fans.....they ARE fairweathered, and they'll do the SAME damn thing to Shitsburgh once they hit a playoff drought.

And we ARE America's Team. And always remember that we're not the ones who gave ourselves that name. (you might've already recognized that, but I skimmed your post. kinda in a hurry. )

Every fanbase has fairweather fans. It's inevitable to deal with douche bags with franchise's like the Steelers who have such deep history not only with the football team, but city as well. When it comes down to it, the Steelers have one of the most passionate and loyal fanbase's in sports.

As for the playoff drought, the odds are in our favor. The last time the Steelers had back to back seasons where they missed the playoffs was in 1999 and 2000. In 20 years (since 1992) the Steelers missed the playoffs only 6 times (1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2006 & 2009.) Out of those 6 years, only a span of 3 was consecutive (1998, 1999 & 2000.) Since 2001, they never went consecutive years missing the playoffs so a playoff drought I don't see happening anytime soon.

And we ARE America's Team. And always remember that we're not the ones who gave ourselves that name.

Didn't a Cowboys film director going through one of their season-in-review montage and name it "America's Team"? So technically, you named yourselves, haha.

I always hated the "America's Team" moniker. It may have come from some highlight film, but the front office seized the opportunity to exploit it to gain notoriety and sell merchandise. That did work well, but it also polarized a lot of people where the Cowboys are concerned. They have a lot of fans everywhere, but they also have boatloads of haters, and a lot of those were created from the feeling of arrogance that is brought with that moniker.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

I'll be the guy wearing a Cowboys jersey.

Seriously....I'll be getting party pass seats (hell of a lot cheaper for the same damn game) in the endzone. I'll PROBABLY be staying at Knights Inn right across the highway from the Stadium with a few buddies. Those rooms are pretty cheap, AND ya get a shuttle to and from, so it's worth lookin' into.

Yes, the Cowgirls gave themselves that name. Honestly, I don't get the hype over Dallas at all. They're a has been team and have been for decades. Every season, their fans and media ball washers claim that Jerry Jones is a genius (he's one of the absolute worst owners in ALL of sports) and that Tony Romo is Joe Montana in training (keep dreaming). Again, they're a team who haven't remotely relevant is many years. I'm looking forward to yet another season of them puking on their cleats. Fuck the Cowgirls!

Honestly, I could care less who coined the phrase. The reality is that it's flat out fucking STUPID for ANY team to embrace such a name. The reality is that the Green Bay Packers have the most titles in NFL history, followed by the Bears and Giants. Hell, the fucking Cowgirls aren't even in the top 3. Not to mention, the Cowgirls won 5 championships. Big fucking deal. Last I checked, the Celtics won 17 (or to put it another way...more than three times as many as the Cowgirls)of those fuckers, and I don't hear their PR machine calling themselves "America's Team". It's a stupid fucking name, and EVERYONE (including their own fans) should be offended by it!

Ben clowns the media so hard, lmao. He's fine. Every year is something new and he seems to enjoy playing with injury versus being healthy. He's had it since the middle of the season last year and it didn't hamper him one bit. Besides, we are implementing an offense for Ben to have a quick release and for the backs to create mis-match's out of the backfield. He won't take as many hits this season as in years past. As long as he could be protected and not being drivin in the dirt with his throwing arm, he'll be fine.

Garrett Reid, son of Andy, found dead

Andy Reid's Son Found Dead

Eagles head coach Andy Reid's oldest son Garrett found dead this morning.Tags: Eagles, Tim McManus, Andy Reid, Garrett Reid

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Garrett Reid, the oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, was found dead Sunday morning in his room at training camp at Lehigh University.

The Eagles held Sunday morning's practice, but Andy Reid wasn't present. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman told reporters that Reid asked the team to go forward with training camp.

Edward Schupp, Chief of Police at Lehigh, said a 911 call was made at 7:20 a.m. Schupp said Garrett Reid, 29, was deceased upon a policeman's arrival at the campus dormitory. Schupp added "there were no suspicious activities."

Players gathered for a team prayer before the walk-through began, and were told not to speak to reporters afterward.

"On a personal note, we've been with Andy for a long time. He's always been strong for us, we're going to be strong for him right now. As a father and a friend, we're all hurting," Roseman said.

Garrett Reid had been assisting the Eagles' strength coaches at training camp.

Garrett Reid was sentenced to two years in a state drug rehabilitation program in July 2008 after being caught with 89 prescription pills inside his rectum at the Montgomery County Prison. He was in the county prison on charges related to a January 2007 car crash that seriously injured a woman.

In November, 2007, Garrett Reid, who was then 24 years old, was sentenced to 23 months in prison for smashing up another motorist's car while he was under the influence of heroin. His younger brother Britt got 22 months plus probation.

Andy Reid had taken a five-week leave of absence form the team in February, 2007 to deal with his family's crisis.

At the time of his sentencing, Garrett Reid said, "I don't want to be that kid who was the son of the head coach of the Eagles, who was spoiled and on drugs and OD'd and just faded into oblivion."
