Opinions on Fahrenheit (1986)

Postby MarcelJordan » Fri Apr 26, 2013 7:21 pm

Like fine wine, it has grown on me. By leaps and bounds. Cant get enough of it...

I think it was ahead of its time. If any song I'd remove would be "I'll be over you" because it's overly commercial.

What are other's take on this album?

A little too soft and poppy. But a great album nonetheless.

Agreed, I like Toto best when they rock out (which they do more often than not, though only folk like us who actually listen to their albums know that!) and 'Fahrenheit' really doesn't rock at all, even the (few) uptempo numbers are much more on the pop side of things, so it will never be amongst my favourites of theirs...BUT it can't be denied that the songs are great, and I do still play it pretty often!

Yeah, this is a good one, no doubt.

Some of the cuts that I enjoy : Till The End (great horns!), Without Your Love (Luke shines on this one), Lea (you can hear Don Henley if you listen close enough), Somewhere Tonight (great groove) and obviously I'll Be Over You

There were lots of A listers appearing on this album : Don Henley, David Sandborn, Miles Davies to name a few...

Maybe my least favourite Toto album post Toto IV. But a few nuggets and that wonderful Williams voice.

Can't go past We Can Make It and Till The End.

Thanks for all the responses!

Joe, you are correct sir, I Can't Stand It Any Longer is outstanding! Mike Porcaro's work is my fav from that one. :D
Drums are heavy too and organic imo.

But here's the shocker.. best tune? It is the instrumental Don't Stop Me Now. Toto really showed that they ARE world class.

Andrew, Fair enough. We Can Make It Tonight and Till the End are indeed great ones infact it was these two that caught my ears now compared to the last time when in fact the two tunes I skipped  :D

Lea maybe the weakest for me when it comes to organic. However, the rest you mentioned I give props to Somewhere Tonight...I swear it would do well on radio today.

You bet about Luke on WYL. I think it was 2nd one released and Luke clearly comes out on top with it.

Need to pull out my LP for a spin, it's been awhile. The only songs that make my regular Toto playlists are "Till The End" and "Could This Be Love." I really don't remember the rest beyond the 'hit.' But perhaps I'll revisit it later and re-evaluate.

I always thought the b-side, In a Word, was one of the better things to emerge from the Fahrenheit sessions. Not sure why it wasn't included on the album. Maybe it was outvoted. In any case, a killer track.

Cool. I hope you do find some of the other stuff better this time around. I surely did :D

Could This Be Love was very easy to like. Catchy in every sense of the word. This time though (15 years after I actually listened to the tune after the 86) I realized there was some interesting time signatures in the drumming...and finally realizing the tambourine used during the chorus.

The tune has got a very organic sound imo (which I didn't realize then) and that's what did the deal for me this time. My fav. part would be the last minute and a half of the tune when you can hear several times of the slapping bass (2.56), (3.33 - 3.35) and at (5.02) and the synth piano 8)

Perhaps as I got older I look for this kind of stuff

Till the End I really get a joy of hearing it this time (unlike the past  )

Cool song. Perhaps not jazzy enough to fit into Fahrenheit....maybe.

It seems to me In A Word was replaced I Can't It Any Longer....similar format and latter turned to a quasi reggae feel. 8)

It's sort of like Toto's Trial by Fire (Journey): a departure from the typical sound, not always in the mood for it, but solid when I feel like listening.

Has anybody got the remaster that came out a few years ago? I never quite understood why one album was seemingly randomly remastered, but it seemed to get good notices at the time from those who bought it...I'm foolishly still waiting for Sony to reissue at least the first 7 albums in remastered/expanded form, doubt it will ever happen now though (but maybe a box set a la the recent BOC one?).

Definitely a must to get those remasters. :D

It's probably one of my least favorite albums ... maybe above MINDFIELDS and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, but below TURN BACK.

Like all Toto albums though, there are songs I really love on it though. Love TILL THE END, I'LL BE OVER YOU and DON'T STOP ME NOW.

But I far prefer ISOLATION before it and somewhat SEVENTH ONE after it.

Joseph is such a cool singer.

Just pulled it out and gave it a listen for the first time in ages, and...

...I think I remembered why I hardly ever spin it. Not much of interest beyond "Till The End" and "Could This Be Love." Some strange reggae-feel experiments and undercooked songwriting, for the most part. Luckily they recovered amazingly with the Seventh One.
