It must have been a hit in Japan or something. How does the 4th song on the second side of a forgotten release from 1985 attract that many hits. Its placement on the record clearly shows it was just a filler song, but something must have happened to break it somewhere. And, if that is the case, shouldn't Tommy be trying to leverage that a bit?

Tommy & the label initially promoted the hell out of it.

I saw his Girls With Guns tour X2( St Paul Winter Carnival), and he played it then. He played it completely solo while his band took a break. The song did showcase his singing & guitar prowess on a 'power ballad'. I then heard it often on Mpls/St Paul FM rock radio long before the 'What If' the album & single was even released. The two FM rock stations(KQRS & WLOL) must of been handed the single when Tommy came to town cause they played the hell out of it. This wasn't that long after 'Lonely School' hit and stalled as Girls With Guns second release.

'What If' was a brutal album but where A&M TRULYdropped the ball was on the song 'Nature Of The Beast'. This was by FAAAARRRR Tommy's best effort on that album. It is one of his best if not his best solo effort.

I agree that nature of the beast is the best song on the album......but the funny thing for me is that many times people dismiss the what if album as being pure junk and I do agree that the album has some colossal clunkers such as "friendly advice".......but outside of a few clunkers I actually enjoy that album quite a bit........i guess it's a guilty pleasure for me or something....lol

What if suffered from very poor production too. The songs for the most part sound lifeless. Count On You is one of the better songs on the cd. Along with COY, Jealousy, and This Is Not A Test, the cd is pretty weak. Listen to his Live In Japan cd from the tour, the songs that were recorded on that tour, that are on What If sound a lot better.
