Styx Videos on DVD

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Sat Mar 27, 2004 9:38 am

I just read this from Styx Collector about the Styx Videos that will be released on DVD:

3-25-2004 20th Century Masters - The Best of Styx DVD Information & Review; Come Sail Away: The Styx Anthology Review
Here's the skinny on the new video compilation DVD:
20th Century Masters - The Best of Styx
Catalog Number: B0002462-09
US Release Date: April 20, 2004

Track Listing
1. Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)
2. The Best of Times
3. Too Much Time On My Hands
4. Boat on the River
5. Mr. Roboto

I'm looking forward to buying this on DVD  I just wish there were move videos included. I just watched the "Borrowed Time" video, I wish this was on DVD.

If you go to Styx Collector, he has an advanced copy (of the videos) and posted his review:

http://www.styxcollector.com/revframe.html

Also he posted his review of the "Come Sail Away" - The Styx Anthology Cd. The full review is there but here is a little bit about the "rare" cut on the cd:

The "Previously Unreleased Full Length Version" of "Man in the Wilderness" is the lone rarity here. The difference is a longer playout at the end; the rest of the song is the same. It's a nice little thing to have, and should be the biggest attraction for die-hard Styx fans to pick this one up (but hopefully not the only one).

Enjoy :)

Froy,
I will agree with you 100% on a 5 song DVD. Now thats BRUTAL!! Shame on whoever came up with this idea. Who in the hell will purchase that??? I will tell you who. The same people that purchased the video classic..... Three Piece Suite!!!!!!!!!!
Rumor has it if you purchase this Styx video collection they will throw in a free Ginsu Knife Set, and the book A Love Foretold.
After you finish watching the videos, and reading the book you can slit your wrists with the knife!!!!!!!

Oh good the guys are back on tonight

I'm pretty sure the band had nothing to do with putting these videos together. It had to be Universal. If the band members, past and present put together a video package, I'm positive they would've added more videos and commentary on making the videos.

I personally don't own the Three Piece Suite, I just have copies of it. I've been bidding on an original on Ebay earlier this month, but it went too high.

I'm actually looking for a new knife set, so that would've came in handy, bummer.

I'm still going to buy it to add to my collection.

Somebody please tell me why a consumer would buy a DVD with only 5 music tracks on it for a reported $10. Are they catering to idiots?

there are only 5 videos because:

1. Three of the songs are Tommy Shaw Songs

2. Nobody would buy it without Mr. Roboto (their most memorable and popular video) and The Best Of Times (one of their most memorable and popular songs).

Who in the hell wants to see a video for "Boat On The River"? Yeah that's a lot better than having some from the EOTC era or perhaps Music Time (which despite being a pretty bad song is a VERY funny video - I love John Panozzo in that one).

Tommy Shaw and his fucked up ego strikes again.

(sorry, I'm aserbic after spending all day in the emergency room yesterday so bear with me)

New member here.

It seems passing strange that the video for "Show Me the Way" was not included in this compilation.
It was directed by Michael Bay. The song was a huge hit and a Gulf War anthem.
Perhaps it was because of WHO wrote the song and WHO sings the song and WHO is featured very prominently in the video.

Welcome Bugsy......the points you make are good ones.....in one post you have already surpassed a few of the regulars here for
total number of insightful posts ! Rather than name names, I'll let you decide who I might be talking about on your own.

I'm not a big fan of the Styx Video's I have seen and remember
so I doubt I will invest any of my income into this DVD. I'm more interested in the Caught In The Act release, hoping it will bring back memories of the shows they did in their prime.

Why thank you very much for those kind words. I have visited here often, and just decided to join. I hope I don't make too big a fool of myself !

I am a big fan of Classic Styx --- code word for "you-know-what" --- Styx in the "Dennis DeYoung era."

As to this video collection, it sounds pretty basic to me, but I am surprised they did not include the 10th video played when MTV debuted, Rockin' the Paradise.
Why not their funniest concept video --- Music Time?

Ahh well ...

All of these videos, except Boat on the River, are in regular rotation on VH1 Classic.

Hello Bugsy.

I'm guessing the choice of which videos got included may also have something to do with distribution rights. While these videos wouldn't be my first choice, I can see a small market for them. There is much in the way of nostalgia these days, and baby boomers love to find things to remind them of their youth. I see this no differently...hence your mention of VH-1 Classic. Same type of audience here, just smaller amount of product to enjoy.

First, a BIG Hello and Welcome to Bugsy. I'm glad to read your postings :)

Second, what Sadie wrote:

All I can say to her post is she's right. I'm sure it has to do with the distribution rights. The others should be released soon on another DVD, hopefully this year yet. Sometimes a company cannot wait for the final okay and just sell what they have, that could be another reason.

I LOVE the "Music Time" video

Styxmike, the "Caught In The Act" DVD, from what I remember, I read that the release date should be May 4th, it will be released in Canada in April, for all you Canadians, eh.

I will be buying the CITA DVD and the 5 videos on DVD. I love music videos.

If you log on to Styxcollector.com there are two GREAT reviews of the Styx 'Come Sail Away' Anthology, and the DVD review. Alan Hirt was sent advanced copies of both and is an EXPERT on Styx(if there is such a thing). Alan praises both releases especially'Come Sail Away'.

Regarding the DVD and the gripes most of us have(only 5 songs), Alan states this is a budget release intended to see if there are fans out there willing to purchase such a release. If there are then we can look for a more detailed longer DVD in the future. He states Blue Collar Man is the live Caught In The Act version, and Boat On The River is also a live 1979 cut. He also praises the DVD, and urges ALL Styx fans to purchase it. It sounds like that if sales are decent we could get many more DVD's of GREAT Styx songs. I retract my further post on this subject.

Log on to see the review for yourself.

I don't agree with the philosophy tho...

"We're going to release something shitty and half-assed and if you support it - THEN we'll put out even more repackaged songs with 5% new stuff for you to spend even more money on and line our pockets."

Still sounds like a money grab.... but if you want it - then go for it.

Yogi,

I read the reviews on Styx collector a few days ago. I have the utmost respect for Allan Hirt, but it isn't enough to make me but an anthology of material I already have. I understood his points very well, but it's still not worth it to me.

As for the dvd of the videos, I said all along it was about distribution rights and it's a low budget deal. I haven't decided if I'll buy this one.

Smile, its Wednesday.

I posted about the reviews and the link to Styxcollector. Here is the link to Styx Collector, you can read all 3 reviews:

Allan is one of the biggest Styx fans and knows A LOT!!!

I hope they'll release more videos too. I wish I had VH1 Classic, I know they play a lot of older videos that most of us grew up with.

SMB,

VH1 Classic is great! Not only do they play all the videos you remember "from the day", but they play some seriously obscure videos as well. The other day I saw the video for "So You Ran" by Orion the Hunter. As a Boston fan as well, it was nice to see the band that included former guitarist Barry Goudreau and current vocalist, Fran Cosmo.

They also have hour blocks of only 80's videos, 70's videos, metal videos etc... They also have Tuesday 2 plays and viewer request hours.

Perhaps we could pick our fave Styx video and then flood the request line. Couldn't hurt to try, right?

Scott (and anyone else!),
Be sure to check out VH1Classic All Request Hour on Monday, April 5th. They will be playing my request for "This is the Time."
About a month ago, they played "Boomchild" on All Request and in regular rotation last week.
I think it is a great idea to send in requests for Styx videos. Always room for more of those!

Bugsy, was the video on yet today or will it be on later?

If I had VH1 Classics, I would be requesting videos all day!!!

Hopefully I'll get it soon.

Scott, what videos do they play during the metal hour?

Yes, Suite, "This is the Time" aired today during the All Request Hour. A very nice video indeed. Good song. And a rather attractive looking Dennis DeYoung in a leather jacket interspersed with cuts from the movie Karate Kid II.

Scott could help me here, but Metal Mania has the usual suspects -- Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Black Sabbath, BIG hair bands, and some that don't quite fit in my estimation. LOTS of leather and studs and explosions. Crunch guitars. Yer basic metal video.

If you are a fan of Classic Rock, this is the channel for you. I go down memory lane every day while watching it.

Ah Crap! Just realized the request hour day was today! Did anyone tape it? Hopefully it will come on again before the end of the day.

SMB, the Metal Hour IS the typical collection of hair bands, but they do play some really really rare stuff. Saw some Queensryche-Operation Mindcrime the other day and DreamTheater-Pull Me Under.

Oh, and to get back to the topic that started this thread, the Styx DVD is only going to be $5.99. I picked up the Tears For Fears one this past weekend (Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Mother Talk, Shout, Head Over Heals, Seeds of Love).

I know I bitch about the cash grab alot, but I think this was more corporate driven, with not so much input from the band. Personally, I would have preferred true videos as opposed to in concert videos. So even a lineup like-Too Much Time, Mr. Roboto, Music Time, Show Me the Way and Love is the Ritual versus what we are getting. But beggars can't be choosers and I'm glad we are getting at least something on DVD.

All Request repeats at 9 p.m. ET and again at 5 a.m. ET, so if you catch this post, you have a chance. The Dennis video aired at about 1:45 ET the first time.

That is not a bad price for that collection of videos on DVD and it will be nice to have some without all the VH1/MTV logos all over them.
