Cover songs

Now that covers are a current Styx topic (courtesy of I Am The Walrus), what are some of your favorite (and least favorite) cover songs of all time?

Here are some that I like:

Mony, Mony - Billy Idol (didn't know it was a cover for a long time)
Love Hurts - Nazareth (sorry Everly Brothers)
Walk This Way - Run DMC
Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Starting Line (blows the original away, much harder version)
Blue Collar Man - Damn Yankees (only heard it live once, and it just blew me away)
Come Together - Aerosmith (actually prefer this to the original, sorry Beatles fans)
Last Kiss - Pearl Jam

Here are some that I don't care for:
Highway To Hell - Marilyn Manson (quite possibly the worst cover ever, IMO)
Sweet Child Of Mine - Sheryl Crow (yuck)
I Love Rock n Roll - Britney Spears (nuff said)

ek, I'll bite on this topic....

I really liked Elton John's version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and Ambrosia's version of Magical Mystery Tour...other than those, there arent any Beatles remakes that trip my trigger...I'm withholding judgement on IATW until I can hear it in a format of Higher fidelity than my computer is capable of.

Elton also does a good version of the Who's Pinball Wizard.

Heart does a greeat version of Led Zeppelin's The Battle of Evermore on the Live in Seattle DVD.

I consider myself blessed to have ( unintentionally ) avoided the 3 covers you listed below....I imagiune they are quite horrible ! One that always got under my skin was the reggae version of the song Lean On Me I think it was the insertion of the words "we be jammin" that ruined it for me. I have nothing against Reggae in general....I did like Claptons version of I shot the Sheriff........

Metallica - Turn The Page

Rolling Stones - Going To A Go Go

Are these copycat bands?

You all have listed some of the really, as Deejay puts it, good, bad and ugly already. As something REALLY ugly, how about anything Pat Boone tried to cover?

Some I like:

Robert Palmer's version of Mercy Mercy Me. That guy had such a smooth, soulful voice.

Vanilla Fudge's version of You Keep Me Hanging On. A completely different take on that old Supreme's Motown hit but very cool.

Dennis DeYoung's interpretation of Fire, using his voice as a counterpoint to the guitar. He hits notes in that song I did not think were possible from a single human being.

the #1 worst version of a song EVER was Prince doing Kiss.....I had successfully blocked that one from the old memory banks....

I can't believe there are those of you who LIKE this guy, but not the Beatles !

I'd rather listen to Roseanne or Ozzy doing prior mentioned songs. They are more pleasing to the ear than the "singing" of
the so called Artist ( mistakenly thought of as talented ) called Prince.

Actually, Classic, if I had my choice of the three, Ozzy, Roseanne, or Prince, or is it the Artist Formerly Known As Prince, or is it the Sign Of Seven, or is it Prince again, I choose D, none of the above....

No kidding. Didn't he release an album once with a bunch of covers of 80s hair bands or something like that? I remember the local classic rock station playing snippets and just tearing it to pieces :D

Take Me Out To The Ball Game- Ozzy Osbourne (He was slurring his words)

That was something else, wasn't it?

Getting back to covers, I had forgotten about the Cheap Trick covers mentioned here; I find them to be quite cool. I also like the Elton John covers that Classic mentioned. And I'd also add Turn The Page to my list of favorites.

There are those who would argue that Any post 1998 version of Come Sail Away - Lady / Grand Illusion etc... ( by Styx or DDY ) is a cover version.....

Discuss amongst yourselves......

Well, while I don't personally care for the rendition as it's done by Gowan, I would not consider it a cover. It is a Styx song, Styx as we currently know it is performing it, so no, not a cover.

And if I never hear that rendition of Last Kiss or Madonna's American Pie again, it will be too soon.

Peace,

Madonna doing ( ruining ? ) that great song was rather
disgusting !

Mariah Carey doing her vocal Gymnastics on I'll Be there
and Without You are both enough to make me puke too !

I Like So Far;

Turn The Page...I really enjoy listening to Metallica's version and Bob Segar's version equally...

Elton John's Pinball Wizard and Lucy In The Sky With Diamond's...

Nazareth- Love Hurts...

Billy Idol- Mony, Mony....

Aerosmith- Come Together...

Chead Trick- Aint That Ashame and Don't Be Cruel( I added that one)...

Van Halen- Pretty Woman, Dancing in The Street, and You Really Got Me(added another)...

Now the Ugly;

Madonna and American Pie (yuk)...Hey Madonna, I don't think that was the pie that Don Mclean was singing about....

And Mariah Carey???How about Emotions which was a cover for You Got The Best Of My Love (Neither one I don't like)....Celebrity Death Match had it right where Mariah hit the high notes and Jim Carrey's head exploded....BOOM...

That was something else, wasn't it?

Yea, Ozzy was indeed something else...It makes me wonder who the bigger Bud Man was...Ozzy or Harry Carrey....

"Give A Little Bit" is now done by the Goo Goo Dolls. I really like this version.

Let's see.

The Good:

"Whole Lotta Love" by Dennis (DeYoung)

I forgot that "You Really Got Me" was originally done by the Kinks, GREAT remake!!!

I like the Cheap Trick covers :)

"Love Hurts" Nazareth.

I like most of the songs that everyone mentioned on here.

I agree with the Bad and the Ugly - ACK

The Corrs. This a real hidden gem of a band, out here in North america. Three sisters and a brother make pretty good pop/rock/celtic music and the cover of Ruby Tuesday is good, BUT their cover of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams is even better... Plus Andrea, the lead singer was recently voted worlds most beautiful woman...I agree
