What's it take to put Styx in R&R HOF?

Postby kiddo » Wed Jan 19, 2005 11:35 pm

Setting aside the politics of the music biz for a minute...
If the criteria below is that by which rock musicians are given the coveted HOF nod, if pressed to name a single song which would put Styx with Dennis DeYoung there, what would it be and why?

>>>The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the legendary performers, producers, songwriters, disc jockeys and others who have made rock and roll the force in our culture that it is.

Performers
Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artistes contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll. <<<

(From the R&R HOOF website)

I pick CSA. It has inspired countless numbers of people with it's pure message of hope and promise. Surely regarded as one of rock's most easily recognizable songs of its era, it has become a mainstay in our modern music culture.

The only way Styx gets into the RR Hall is if they become a band again.
Right now its a spin off band no way they even get looked at
Same with JRNY

Froy, I see your point, but Creedence Clearwater Revival made it in, and they hadn't been together in years. I don't think it really matters what state the band is in, it's more about the influence, and as much as I'd like to see Styx inducted, I just don't believe it could happen, look at the lack of respect the band gets. Frankly, I think they are a step above all the other bands they are constantly stacked with, Foreigner, Reo Speedwagon, Kansas, I want to say Journey, but I know what that would get me.. I could almost see the attention Styx gets from songs like "Mr. Roboto" & "Come Sail Away" helping, at least they have songs that people remember, but does this put them in a negative or positive light? They do have one hell of a composer in Dennis, but he's never received the credit he deserves.. Wouldn't it be something if he ended up making it in, but the rest of the band didn't?.. :o

I'd say Journey too!! At the time Styx and Journey were on top 1977-1984 Styx sold more albums and were a bigger concert draw. They were more popular. Styx was #1 back then vs all of those bands Journey included. Since then Journey may have sold more albums, but at the time Styx was #1.

You can compare the album sales back then of Equinox- Kilroy vs
Infinity- Raised On Radio, and at that time Styx sold more.

kiddo, great thread :)

I agree with your song choice of "Come Sail Away" and your reasoning.

Froy, not true. They don't need to be back together to be inducted. Don't forget The Police were inducted. Backstage was such a mess, I think it was Stewart Copeland that didn't want to be photographed with Sting. Sadie, help me out here

I thought CCR was inducted, but John Fogerty jammed with an all-star band. I thought he refused to jam with his former bandmates. I could be wrong, I'll have to try to find the article where I read it.

I don't understand how some of the bands made it to the RnR HOF.

BlackWall, I feel that Styx is a step above the bands you mentioned too.

FYI
, I "heard" that Tommy has been schmoozing a few of the board members of the RnR HOF. He's working on it. Just look at the recent people that have been appearing at the lastest Styx shows, Billy Preston, Sam Moore, hmmmm.

Wait!!! I'm checking with my Crystal Ball, Styx should be nominated within 4 years.

BlackWall is being generous here. A gentleman (or is BlackWall a female?)

Froy: "The only way Styx gets into the RR Hall is if they become a band again. Right now its a spin off band no way they even get looked at
Same with JRNY"

Adam: That's a PRONOUNCEMENT.

BlackWall is showing good manners, referring to Froy as having made a "point", but it was just another in an endless series of negative, arrogant "know it all" statements, in the guise of facts. But it's completely untrue...adamant, ignorant and bogus.

For the record, BlackWall is on the money. In fact, I'd guess that 50% or more of the bands that are inducted are split up or factionalized. I recall Sly And The Family Stone, who walked on stage without having spoken to Sly in years - and they left without him saying boo to the rest of the band.

It happens. Keep this in mind next time Froy presents one of his negative opinions as fact.

Well politics aside, I'd say Come Sail Away, followed by Mr. Roboto and possibly even The Best of Times. Each song has become part of current pop culture history. Were they influential? Well I think they were, but perhaps not in the way the Hall means.

Whether or not they are inducted I think has something to do with the infighting, but more honestly, I think has to do with the decision makers. While the public loved Styx in their prime, the powers that be did not. And I get a strong sense that those same type of people are the ones who pick for the Hall.

If Styx gets inducted, I think it will long after this generation and it's mind set are gone. Just my oh so humble opinion.

Good POSITIVE thread, kiddo.

However...... Styx is a LONG way down the R & R HoF list I fear. Van Halen has not even been nominated.

I think Styx and Journey have an equal chance(and that chance is not good), but which group would get the first nod?

Dennis certainly has the writing chops to get in, but are his abilities ever acknowledged by the rock press, the critics, other musicians even? Of course in some circles, they are, and was Jimmy Kimmel ever a boost in the ol' cool credentials, however, they are looked upon in a mostly unfavorable light.

It is simply "cool" to hate Styx (and bands of their ilk), period.

I feel, given their tremendous popularity as a touring band and the sales of their albums, they are a shoo-in, at least for a nomination.

However, given how they are viewed by those who might ultimately nominate and then vote them in, their chance of a nomination (much less being voted IN) are very, very low.

Just my 50 cents on this topic.

The songs I would choose would be...

More Love For The Money & Fields Of The Brave.....

Before you have heart attacks I will be serious now.

COME SAIL AWAY.........THE STYX ANTHEM

LADY......THE SONG THAT BROKE THEM NATIONALLY

BABE........THE BANDS ONLY #1 SINGLE (This would not be my choice or the choice of most Styx fans but probably the industry choice)

I think what might work against Styx is their unique sound. It would be hard to pin any influences on them because their sound often changed (sometimes drastically) from album to album. If not for the vocals, could someone listen to The Grand Illusion and Kilroy Was Here and determine that it was the same band? I'm not so sure.

Secondly, a lot of their more popular songs were ballads (Babe, Best Of Times, Don't Let It End, Show Me The Way) which in my opinion are more generic sounding than the Grand Illusion album or the lesser known cuts on Pieces Of Eight.

And I don't know about Mr. Roboto. It could be viewed as influenced by the music of the day, rather than the other way around. It would fit right in on an album with Burning Down The House, She Blinded Me With Science, and Our House :D

Finally, the critics view of the band doesn't help.

I'd have to agree with bugs and Sadie, the chances aren't real good at the present time. The music on Equinox - Paradise Theatre gives them their best chance, if ever.

Just my 2 cents.

Well how could STYX be ever inducted ...they cannot possibly compare with the influence and signficance of Madonna, the staple singers, the mommas and the poppas (by the way I like California Dreaming), ...yadda yadda....what a joke. Let me be politically incorrect for a minute, I always get a chuckle out of the minority entry each year. It looks like a hell of a struggle to come up with some obscure black record producer, or gospel band whose members no longer exist. Talented artists like Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, Prince, Smoky robinson, the Supremes are already in, so the rock committe struggles to find the politcally correct entry each year while great classic bands are not or no where close to being in: Lynryd Skynrd, Boston, Van Halen, Journey, Yes, Rush, Reo Speedwagon, Kansas, Foriegner, and of course our boys.
