Brave New World/Cyclorama

(Perhaps a thread that focuses solely on music?)

Like them or not, both these albums contain songs written in part by the same individuals who penned those great classics from years ago. Which songs on these albums (if any) do you feel contain elements of the classic Styx sound, and why?

Brave New World - I like the "eerie" sound this one has. One of the more Styx-sounding songs on the album, IMO.

While There's Still Time - Even though it's a straight forward ballad, I think it has a Styx sound to it. Would've been greatly enhanced by a Babe or Don't Let It End sounding guitar solo. This song would fit in nicely on Cornerstone or PT.

Fallen Angel - Reminds me of Nothing Ever Goes . . or Lonely People. Wouldn't sound out of place on PT. Again, some more aggressive guitar work is called for.

Everything Is Cool - Great song. With some keyboards/synthesizers, ala Blue Collar Man or Renegade, I could easily see it on POE.

Heavy Water - Perfect as is; very JY-sounding. Not sure which album I'd put this on.

Goodbye Roseland - Acceptable if for no other reason than the lyrics. More guitars and a more powerful chorus (like Come Sail Away or Pieces Of Eight) would make this a winner.

Waiting For Our Time - Classic Styx guitar riffs and harmony vocals. Throw in some classic synthesizer work and I'd dare to put this one on GI or POE.

These Are The Times/Captain America - Both are standard JY rockers. Pick any of the classic albums to put these on.

One With Everything - Terrific song; definitely has the epic sound of old. Again, pick the album.

Well, there are my thoughts. Anyone else enjoying a slow weekend, feel free to chime in.

Goodbye roseland sounds a lot like a Billy Joel tune. Dennis should add this one into his current set list

Doubtful that will happen. I think he holds the song very personal now.

I agree with you on Brave New World, While There's Still Time, Fallen Angel, EveryThing Is Cool, Heavy Water,Waiting For Our Time, These Are The Times, Captain America, and One With Everything....

Goodbye Roseland to me is a great song because it has that sentimental feel of saying goodbye to friends or loved ones, an old car, an old house, or a long time job or anything with a sentimental value to it....

Number One/ What Have They Done To You; Both of these songs are good but I believe the chorus harmonies could have been better...

Kiss Your Ass Goodbye/ Killing That Thing You Love; Two of Glen's best with Styx

Together; Good Lead vocal from Tommy and good musically...

I didn't purchase Brave New World. I was not impressed with what I heard on the radio or what they played in concert. It sounded to me like nothing more than an excuse to tour. I have heard all of the album and the only song on it that strikes me is Heavy Water. Because it is classic JY. That said, most JY songs are classic JY. They are very one dimensional. I never considered his songs to be the highlites of their respective albums.

Cyclorama on the other hand I think is a masterpiece. It is too bad that it wasn't on a major label and didn't get the push that their classic albums did. The only weak moments on it are Bourgeois Pig and the bonus tracks. These songs were fun when it was released. But they don't hold up over time. Everybody's contributions were strong. I think that Glen will be missed on their next album of original material. However I bet Gowan will have a stronger presence. It will be interesting to see what Ricky brings to the table.

It is interesting that Ricky is being criticized. Did you not know that he is a composer and producer?

As far as bass playing is concerned Ricky is the best of the three that has played with Styx.
The people he has worked with over the years Neal Schon, Jimmy Page etc will probably say how good he is.

Dennis DeYoung is a composer and a producer he's the one who belongs in STYX not some outsider.
