Dennis is the producer of the Styx cds, when he was a group, and in part he created a style for the cds that they made. They all sounded crystal clear. Styx last studio cd Cly.... was lacking. All the songs, even the slow ones seemed to be recorded at the loudest level possible. And the sound didn't sound as "hi-fi", for lack of a better word, as the other cds.

What I was wondering, is who would you like to take up the producer helm on the next (not covers) studio cd. Someone who would help redefine their sound.

Leave Dennis out, but he would be my first choice, because he knows the Styx sound.

1) Robert Mutt Lange- Styx needs the sonic hump, and needs to get back their vocal harmonies, this is the man, plus he is a got song writer. Great work with AC/DC, Def Leppard, Mrs. Lange (twain), The Cars, Bryan Adams, Foreigner.

2) Bruce Fairban(?) or something like that, he did excellent work with Aerosmith, and Van Halen. I hear he past away, don't know if that is true or not.

Whoever, he needs to bring back the old spund, while adding a new feel to it-ERIC

I don't think Bryan Adams two cds by Mutt sounded like Def. True about the cost though.
Rick Rueben is good, isn't he the one that did AC/DC's ball breker cd. That was a good cd for them-ERIC

To be fair, Dennis CLAIMS he Produced all of Styx' records, even though they are credited to the entire band. (If you ask me, when I sonically compare the sound of Cyclorama to DDY's tracks on Brave New World, I have my skepticsm about DeYoung's claim.)

To be accurate, Bruce Fairburn died about 5 or so years ago, so I think that takes him out of the running for a Styx album.

As for a producer who'd "redefine" their sound, that's a tough one. First off we fans would bitch and moan about how the sound changed ("It's not a Styx album!" Froy would cry).

I mean, do you remember Eric Clapton's "Change The World" single? It was Produced by Babyface. I think that's a great record, and it certainly gave Clapton an updated, commercial sound (not to mention a hit). And I'm sure there's a bulletin board somewhere on the internet where a buncha old guys are griping about how Clapton stopped being great in the 60s & what a sell out "Change The World" was. (You know - a Bizzarro World with a Bizzarro Abaitman, a Bizzarro Froy and a Bizzarro Adam...).

Jeff Lynne might be good Styx producer. Then again, he made the Beatles & Tom Petty sound like ELO, so I don't know...

How about Glen Burtnik?

To me, that's the interesting thing about Ricky Phillips jumping into the mix. Phillips is a producer. (Or so I've read)

Having worked with Coverdale/Page and Bad English, I'd imagine he has a decent take on Rock.
