Classic Rock Magazine - April Issue STYX!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Sat Mar 12, 2005 5:40 am

Any friends from England out here?????

I just received this email from a few of my Styx lists:

The April 2005 edition of the UK's "Classic Rock" magazine features a 5 page article about the making of "The Grand Illusion".

There's also a letter from a reader about the forthcoming UK tour - criticising the £26 ticket price, and suggesting that attendances with be poor because of this.

I have no clue if the magazine is sold in the U.S., does anyone know? If not, I would really, really, really, like a copy of this issue :)

How much is the 26 in U.S. money?

26 Euros is currently about $35.00

I'm spending more than that to see Slipknot this coming weekend. Not sure what Styx sold in Nashville for...

Thanks for the clarification. Still not a bad price, since that's the going rate here.

Classic rock is sold in Canada, and I buy it when it comes out (every 2 months or so).So why not the States.
It was also in this magazine there was a bit on DDY where he was in a situation where he was described as being not very nice.I was about to bring it up then, but didn't.

Hi folks
The interview is mainly JY (suprise) but with pieces by Tommy and Chuck and draws on older interviews for comments and stuff. The article is mainly about GI and how some of the songs came together and how they all contributed to them "even though many of those songs were credited to one individual, a lot of co-operation took place" JY , even rotating hotel rooms so 2 guys would be together and 1 on his own for ideas.
one little quote from JY

"This is year six without Dennis, and our arc grows higher while his doesn't even know where its heading," Young laughs "He pushed Derek Sutton out the door, and his career has dipped. I wish Dennis all the best, but he needs someone to tell him some cold, ugly truths"

oh i can hear froy scream this side of the atlantic

Derek Sutton was a manager for Styx.

Here is a link to an article that may help.

JY says of Styx "........our arc grows higher............."

Did I miss the announcement about Cyclorama, or Rockers, or Styxworld
etc ( finally ) reaching Gold Status ????

or was it an announcement about averaging 5,000 fans per ( Styx only ) show ?

Although I suppose when your arc is barely above scraping the ground to start with, there's alot of room for it to "go higher"

On the other hand, perhaps both sides could use help of the variety Sutton, or someone like him, could offer......that is if they care about maximizing their success at this stage of their careers.

I just cant understand why every interview always leads back to Dennis
Jy and Shaw are so damm jealous of him it's ridiculous.
Now you guys can see why Im so fukin pissed off at these 2 goofs.
Current Styx should have no fans as far as Im concerned.
All I can say is James Young is dilusional and needs to grow up /

Yes, which magazine are you talking about? I went inside my Styx treasure chest and found the Classic Rock issue from April 2003 with the story: STYX - Robots, pomp and tragic circumstance. Is it this issue? JY was not very nice in this issue either. This issue also talks about Derek Sutton too.

I thought the upcoming issue April 2005 is an interview with Dennis. That was my understanding. Well, I know he was interviewed for the Classic Rock magazine.

I also found a ton of stuff that I forgot I had - LOL I have a "Mr. Roboto Pez".

OK Suite.
The article including Dennis is to be found in Classic Rock September 2004
edition page 24 about 2/3 through.Article is by Geoff Barton.
I was going to mention this at a time where froys bile was flowing rather thickly against the other Styx members.Just as to counter balance the flow.
If you can't locate it,I will ofcourse be happy to give a little summary.
all the best.

If the article isn't that long, is there some way you can scan it and then copy/paste it here? If not, I'll try to find the issue, which I would like to have :)

The issue I have has 8 pages on Styx, including pictures.

If I could figure out how much it costs, I would have a subscription to this magazine. I like the articles, it's a really good magazine overall.

Even though I'm totally Pro-Dennis, I still like to hear both/all sides of the members of Styx, past and present (and future-LOL).

I am with Suite on this one. Bring it on gr8!

I, however, reserve the right to call JY a jerk when his public pronouncements call for it. :P What he says in private is his own business.

Sounds like you have a very complete collection there, Suite. Anything you can share from it on here would be cool to read sometime.

At first glance when I read the comments, I didn't like what I read. But, while I still don't like the comments, I can recognize why JY made them. He and the band will be touring over there soon. He needs to promote this lineup. What's he going to say..."we're only playing to average sized crowds. While we had a little blip of minor success with Walrus, we recognize our time in the spotlight is growing short". For JY, it would seem he needs to portray Dennis in a negative manner to showcase this lineup. I think he takes it a bit far, but since he isn't going to change, all I can do is take his comments with a grain of salt and recognize that it's a business.

Since I consider myself to also be "pro-Dennis", I'd be curious to see what was written Great. Share if you can. We can take. At least for me, I recognized a long time ago, that while I prefer Dennis' music, he has not always helped himself, now has he.

Peace,

Sadie

LOL, I have so many Rubbermaids of Styx stuff I'm still finding after we moved in - YIKES. I also have a few old Circus magazines that I probably bought on Ebay. I'm still trying to find more and more and more Styx "stuff". I'll try to scan the "old" articles and copy/paste them on here. Of course back then everything sounded so sweet with the group, little did we know!!

Again, BRING IT ON guys!!!!

Here goes kids.
I do not have a scanner and all that fancy schmancy stuff .So i will have to copy it for you.
Geoff Barton writes in the article about how meating the stars backstage can shatter your image of the them.
First there is a bit about nutbar Michael Schenkerand the moves unto the piece on Dennis.
Quote- A bands contempt for their fans is another matter.I remember being on tour with styx one time in the US,probably around the release of the Chicago pomp rockers' Paradise Theatre album in the early 80es.A fan met singer/keyboardist DDY outside the stage door and presented him with some wonderfully crafted, hand made figurines inspired by the sleeve of the bands 78 album Pieces of eight.(The Easter Island stone figures). The styx figurines were made of clay and had obviously been kiln-fired (?) and then painted with loving detail. They were little works of art,but DeYoung accepted them grumpily. When the fan had left, dennis gave them to me,uttering,"What am i supposed to do with this crap". Such instances can shatter your illusions somewhat.

Whew, for a minute I thought it would be something really bad

Now seriously, countless entertainers have done the exact same thing. I remember talking to Dennis' son Matt about this very thing. He talked of how so many people handed things to him or to anyone connected to Dennis and thought that Dennis would be thrilled to have them. Yeah it would be nice, and I'm sure in this case, the fan did put a lot of effort into it, but from his perspective, if he kept everything a fan gave him, where would he put it all. And how does anyone insure that things are safe? No I'm not suggesting bombs or anything like that, but do you accept things from strangers? And let's be realistic here, fans can be fanatical. I would guess that for every time a fan gives something that is kept, at least 10 things are thrown away. Should he have worded it nicer...absolutely. But in the scheme of things, this, for me, is pretty minor.

Sure it's minor.I agree. But this just to put a little smudge on the view of a certain tunnelvisioned person's outlook of Saint Dennis.
I also understand that one can't keep everything one is given.I don't.

I wonder when it will register that there are some, who no matter what they are confronted with, will never concede the point. I work with some people like that. But, windmill tilting is a wonderful hobby.
