The first time you saw Styx ??

Awwrite then.
This should be a straight forward one without too much chance of any mudslinging .But then again.
What year/ tour / place you see Styx for the first time?
I saw Styx in Copenhagen Denmark first time they visited on the Cornerstone tour in 1980.lived there then.
Hope this one has not been through the wringer before.

If you are talking concerts, my first time seeing the band was EOTC. I did not have the good fortune to see them prior.

By the way, I hear Copenhagen is a beautiful city.

Well, even if it has, how can we argue about THIS???? LOL!

Alas, I never saw Styx live. Only Dennis and that was recently.

I am really sorry I missed them when they toured though Houston, I know, several times! It just wasn't in the cards for me.

So, the first time I saw them was on TV when the KWH concert was broadcast .

I saw them open for BTO I think it was 1976 at the Chicago Stadium
I remember Born For Adventure the sword fighting with Dennis and JY
Dennis actually had a sword in his hands Midnight Ride Smoked
They blew away BTO , When I had breakfast with JY in Vegas he told me BTO was jealous of Styx and treated them like crap on that tour,

1st time for me was the Main Event Tour in 1979....the exact date was ripped off my ticket stub, but I can tell you the ticket was $8.50.....also saw the Paradise Theatre tour on July 24th 1981, at which time inflation wielded it's ugly head, and I had to fork over a whopping $10.50 for the privelidge !!!!

Of course in '79 I was only making $2.90 / hour doing Janitorial work. Say.........., I wonder if that job is still open ?

Long nights, impossible odds........

I'll try to find my box of old ticket stubs. I'm pretty sure the first time that I was able to see a Styx concert was the EOTC tour. I had a few opportunities when I was in grade & high school, but since I was grounded all the time I couldn't go

I'll add this, the first time I became a Styx fan was in 1972, I was 7 years old and fell in love with the song "You Need Love" and then "Lady" after :D As I'm typing this I'm listening to my Wooden Nickel cd :)

I first saw them at the Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport IA. I think it was the summer of 78. It was the end of the Grand Illusion tour. They also played Blue Collar Man.

They only played 10 songs. But I remember how most of the songs had extended endings.

Up to that point I always thought Dennis was cool, having only heard his voice and seen pictures of him. When I saw him live, my opinion changed.

Return To Paradise tour in Omaha during the summer of 1996. They played all the songs that are on the CD, plus Light Up, Lights, and Little Suzie (which rocked).

Just curious. If you didn't/don't think he is/was cool, then why did you go see him on Valentine's Day? Sincerely I am curious to know why.

Well, I'm not Kansas, but I can tell you the few reasons that I'm going to see Dennis in April, and while it's a bit harsh to say "I can't stand the guy," I think it's a safe bet to say that I find him pompous, corny, cheesy, and even a little annoying (the self-depricating humor grates on my nerves after I've heard it a thousand times LOL).

The reasons I'm going are as follows:

1. I am a Styx fan. That means any Styx or Styx related show or CD that comes my way, I will invest in. Their music is special to me, and regardless of who is singing it, I'll be there. With bells on.

2. I like the idea of seeing "Styx" in another form. It's cool to hear the music done in a completely different manner & style.

3. Castle Walls. Nuff said.

4. The tickets were given to me as a Christmas present. (But I would have bought my own anyway)

5. I hear the drummer's hot. ;-)

Hope this helps.

Zan, ooooooh, let me know what you think of "Pieces of Eight"!! I personally liked hearing it live with what Dennis has added and I'm looking forward to hearing it again :) Oh, and I love Castle Walls live too, oh and Suite Madame Blue!! I can't wait until next week Saturday, oh and then I get to hear "Unfinished Song" live too!! I think I'm just a little excited

Zan. Other than "the drummer's hot" part, probably Mr. Kansas' reason's for going are similar to yours.

Oh, and BTW, I get REALLY tired of those same old "jokes" Dennis tells myself. The guy is a quick wit; why not some NEW stuff???

Enjoy the show.

LOL! I can see that you're more than a little excited. I'd be too. I love Unfinished Song. Maybe I'll get lucky in Ft. Lauderdale (That didn't come out right). Pieces of Eight is another all-time favorite of mine. I'm sure it'll be a good experience. When I listen to Dennis' version of Styx (I felt this way in 96 & 97 too), I get caught up in the music; almost an inward escape, like a dream. It's almost as if I get "lost" in the music. The newer incarnations of Styx have a completely different effect on me. It's more in your face, kick some ass, have a blast and dance your face off rock n roll. I love that, but it'll be nice to remember the old way once again too. I just hope his "personality" doesn't wake me from my dream. lol

Just remember that it's by and large a sit down kind of show. There are normally a few standing o's, but it's a much more mellow experience. It is no way a ROCK concert. If you go expecting that, you will be disappointed.

Pieces of Eight and Castle Walls are definite highlights. I don't think you'll get Unfinished Song at your show since it's only being featured in those Lost Treasures shows.

I would think that since there are aspects of his personality you don't like that they will interfere with the show for you a bit. While I wish he would retire some of his jokes, for me, I think he does enough off the cuff stuff that it balances. But that is just me.

Enjoy

Ah yes the jokes. You have to remember there are a LOT of newbies going to Dennis' shows and never heard the jokes before. These same people have never been on message boards or have seen his interviews. When I was at the NYC show, my dad, brother and his friends thought his jokes were so funny. They've never seen him before they were newbies. At the Milwaukee show I took my mom and a few friends (newbies) that never seen him before and they thought he was very funny too. After seeing Dennis solo about 10 times recently (LOL), I don't get tired of the jokes, but that's just me :D

I think Kyle's hot too and he's very nice :)

Oh yeah, I'm very excited

IN NO WAY am I expecting ROCK show (If I was, I'd have to have been oblivious for the last 10 years). That's what Styx brings to the table. I tried to explain what a Dennis-esque experience was to me, but I guess I failed. Yes, sit down, shut up, and get lost in the music.

The jokes are stale, but I'm more put off by with HIM than anything particular he says. If he keeps his TALKING to a minimum, I should enjoy the show very much.

Maybe if somebody from the back row screams "UNFINISHED SOOOOONG!" He'll take pity on the poor bastard...ette. ;-)

Gotcha. Much in the same way Tommy's good ole boy personality can grate on me. Dig the guys music, can't take too much of his "folksiness".

You explained yourself fine. I was only trying to note that many on here and elsewhere seem to think his show should be compared to Styx show. Sorry I didn't make myself clearer. Fuzzy typing I suppose.

As for me, Unfinished Song can remain...well...unfinished.

Please don't, they'll think it's me yelling - LOL

I shouldn't encourage this, but I think if you get enough people to yell it loud, he "might" play it or part of it.

I gave the current line up a few chances in concert and I just couldn't enjoy it like I did in 1996/1997. But for me, Dennis is what made Styx, the band that I enjoyed. It just wasn't the same without him on stage singing the songs that he wrote and the way he performed. It's a whole different group.

I don't enjoy it like I did in 1996 or 97 either. I enjoy it more. :) Like you said, it's different. Actually, 1997 was downright depressing. They all looked miserable.

Though I am on Suite's wavelength here regarding Current Styx, I appreciate your descriptions of what you like(d) about the Classic lineup and what you like about this group touring now.

It makes a lot of sense to me, though I do not share the enthusiasm about TS, JY, LG & Company, you explained the differences, and why you like both, very clearly.

FWIW, the Styx of 1991 had a more in-your-face rock 'n roll effect to me as well. Then again, they were playing smaller venues, and they had a "closer" relationship with their audience. Of course, they had that new, wacky guitar player too. After that, it was never the same for me. Once Tommy came back, it seemed almost "forced" from that point on until the turn of the century. The new Styx (1999 forward) has had its share of akwardness and obstacles, but it feels so much more "real" than it did in the mid-90's FOR ME.

It's nice that we all have choices now, though. LOL

I know, I really disappointed my parents too  But they're proud of me now of what I have accomplished :) I was never really a trouble maker, just a kid that wanted to have a great time and I did. I have always lived my life like it was going to be my last day. It's kind of sad, because I know every trick my kids pull on me, they'll never get away with anything - LOL

I'm hoping to make a "rock n' roll" scrapbook. It's fun to go back and look at my ticket stubs, there are a lot of concerts that I went to that I forgot about.

Does anybody remember the World Series of Rock in the 1980's? The line-up was Quarterflash, Loverboy, .38 Special, Triumph and Foreigner. Great concert at the old Milwaukee County Stadium.
