thebook - you were 4 rows in front of the keyboards?? You were right behind me - LOL Were you with anyone or by yourself? Were you the guy holding up all the albums? Just kidding.....

What a GREAT show!! I've seen about 10 Dennis solo shows at various venues & crowds and this has to be the best show.

Classic, Yes I LOVED hearing "Unfinished Song"!! Once he mentioned that he was going to play it, my friends all looked at me - LOL I guess I mentioned it a little too much on all the boards (and the drive down) - LOL Anyway, I looked around too when he was playing it and I was amazed at all the people that were singing along. It was very touching to see Chuck L. up in the balcony listening to the song for the first time live too. I'm so glad Dennis sang this in Chicago.

I always thought "Best Thing" was an okay song when I heard it on the album/cd. But hearing it LIVE, great, great song!!!!!! I loved hearing "Queen of Spades", but it was missing that 2nd guitar, still great to hear. I liked his version of "Borrowed Time"!! I hope he adds this to the summer setlist.

GREAT concert!!!! I'm ready to go again :)

I had a Michigan shirt on and was with a buddy (who were you with). nope didn't have any albums, but if I did, I will make sure "Unfinished Song" is on "Man of Miraclees". Pretty good weekend actually, we went to the Gin Mill friday and saw MSU beat Duke.

The show was awesome and in my top 5 of all-time. "Unfinished Song", "Pieces Of Eight" , "Best Thing" and "Queen of Spades" were great. I was never a big fan of "Borrowed Time", but it was still good to here it live. The guy can flat out sing. and... as it turns out, I am seeing him again in Clearwater, with friends who live in Florida, no I am not a groupie, but I got the florida tickets before the Chicago "treasures" show was announced. Four more requests on songs for him to add to the rotation: "I'm Okay", "Paradise", "While There's Still Time" and "The Grove of Eglantine". I think it would be cool if he could play at least one song from every studio album he played on. He almost did it Saturday night. book out.

You said, "Jim and Tom so much they will have no choice but to talk to Dennis nobody will care about Almost Styx anymore if Dennis keeps this up BET ON IT"

I take, "talk to Dennis" as getting Styx back together.

Yea Jim and Tom running to Dennis big difference

Dennis SOLO?
Saturday night was a STYX concert my Friend not Dennis solo.

No, it was "Dennis DeYoung performing the music of Styx". No matter how much you want him to own the name and the band, he doesn't...he settled that issue out of court.

Still not a solo concert it was 95 percent styx music
names mean nothing its the music pal .

How about Journey teaming up with Foreigner, and then joining Styx/REO?

How about it ?
Journey will headline every show .

U2 is in a class of its own. Elton isn't even a comparable act. Find an 80's arena rock band that doesn't tour with other bands.

Styx was from the 70's
The issue is co headline

And, if he can't sell tickets, he won't get venues. He'll have to perform to more frogs.

Are you really this stupid he could get any venue if he paid there fee
Its the promoter who looks for a venue that fits the area and situation.
Almost Styx by themself gets no better venue than Dennis DeYoungs Styx

I saw the orchestra thing and I thought it was one of the most boring concerts I had ever seen.

Comming from you so what Your a boring dude who chases Tommy shaw around .

Judging by the number of empty seats, I doubt he'll be back.

You live by the corn fields so what framers are not into class acts
They spit tabbaca

Why would the Civic Center here want to book Dennis when they could sell twice as many seats for another act- including Styx?

Take away the Styx name and see how many tickets Jim Young and Tom Shaw sell
Go ahead big mouth Take away the name Styx and see who sells more

No, it's obviousl that YOU don't want to face reality. He has spent years putting on the orchestra show. If he switches gears, there is no gaurantee that people, and venues, will follow.

Right and Amost Styx has switched gears and now is doing a cover band act but they wont start over again
wake up Monk ./
What venues the Crystal Palace in the Wisconsin Dells WOW there huge

Fact is that Dennis is now performing to the some of those same type of venues.

No he isn't

Fact is Monker put Tom Shaw, Jim Young with special guest Larry Gowan on the sign and see if anyone shows up. I would bet they would not even sell 100 tickets

No, that is not a 'fact'. It is an opinion. It is also an opinion that will never be tested because of who owns the name "Styx".

Even with the name Styx they are losing fans that is a fact also
The test is answered when the bus stops

There using the name of a band that Dennis Deyoung started and made famous without Dennis Deyoung there back to the beef and bowl in Alabama.

and, Dennis performs at frog festivals, so what exactly is your point?

The points are very simple, and as they have always been:

Styx is Styx no matter what you say...Dennis solo is NOT Styx, no matter what you say. Dennis settled that issue already, and he did not take your advice when he did.

Styx is doing what they do despite what Dennis does, and Dennis does what he does despite what Styx does. The two are not looking at each other for either inspiration or jealosy.

Dennis has not established themselves as a touring act as Styx has. That is a simple fact that you refuse to admit. Dennis is starting over, Styx isn't.

The show you guys saw may have been awesome. If he wants to take it on the road and sell a few hundred tickets per venue, that's great. But, don't be a hypocrit and critique Styx' choice of venues when Dennis is doing no better, and in some ways, worse.

Froy vs Monker. Round 2,956 (or thereabouts). I call it a draw.

And Adam hasn't weighed in yet.

What the HE** were you doing at a DENNIS show, Monker? I assumed, from your posts, that anything you might have owned with his voice on it had long since been sent to the crusher.
And if it hasn't, why NOT? You apparently HATE the guy. Am I right?

I cannot believe you own any Styx CD's other than Cyclocarrot and the live recordings by the Glen lineup and Ricky lineup.

There are several people who post here who are genuine fans of both Dennis and Current Styx. You, to me, are certainly not a fan of the former. So your posts make perfect sense to me. So you understand my amazement that you actually went to a DDY concert.

Its not a matter or what I say its a matter of what people believe
The ticket say's Styx the band members say other wise
Dennis ticket say's The Music of Styx the muisc say's its Styx the people at the show on Saturday when they heard Styx booed so loud it was increadable
The current Styx band has instilled hatred towards the name Styx no matter what you say , People can't stand a band called Styx without Dennis as the leader.

Dennis solo is NOT Styx, no matter what you say.

Yes it is no matter what you say.

Dennis settled that issue already, and he did not take your advice when he did.

Funny how the tickets are mixed up .

Bottom line Monker he takes this show out it gets rave reviews over and over again . Just watch the Almost STYX reviews they will get slammed this summer.

Maybe he wanted to hear Castle Walls in its entirety. Maybe he needed a good laugh. You know, just because some of us don't think Dennis was victimized - or maybe even that he got what he deserved doesn't mean we HATE the guy or wish him ill or don't want to hear him perform. believe it or not, you CAN be a fan of someone's music and not be a fan of them personally.

I don't care for his solo recordings...and I never bought them. I have "Boomchild" on CD, which someone gave me, and his other pre-10 on Broadway" albums on cassette, which the same person gave me.

And if it hasn't, why NOT? You apparently HATE the guy. Am I right?

No, I don't 'hate' him at all.

I cannot believe you own any Styx CD's other than Cyclocarrot and the live recordings by the Glen lineup and Ricky lineup.

I own every Styx CD, except CitA, the debut, the compilations, and maybe one or two of the newer live CD's.

Dennis solo is NOT Styx, no matter what you say.

Yes it is no matter what you say.

It is irrelevant what any of us here say. Dennis already settled that argument and agreed that the current band is Styx and he is not. Deal with it.

Really show us where he setttled that
Show me the proof.

Look in the archive...we already went thru this.

Yep one is covering other bands and the other is promoting Styx

correct, Dennis is covering Styx songs and the other is continuing the band named Styx.

Bottom line Monker he takes this show out it gets rave reviews over and over again . Just watch the Almost STYX reviews they will get slammed this summer.

Dennis has had his fair share of 'rave' reviews in the past and he has gotten nowhere. The reviews, good OR bad, are meaningless.

No, I wanted to have fun at a concert full of awesome Styx songs. I wanted to stand up and cheer and sing with a few thousand other fans.

What I got was 1500 or so people sitting thru almost an entire show. I got a frontman just going thru the motions, seeming to not even attempt to get the audience involved. Well, except for the bit where his bitterness encourages his "uncle" in the audience to say that HE is Styx. It was nowhere even CLOSE to being as entertaining and fun as a Styx concert.

I don't HATE Dennis...he has an incredible voice and he was part of making some incredible music with Styx. But, in a solo setting, he NEEDS someone like a Tommy shaw and JY to make his show entertaining...because his vocals alone do not carry the entire show.

you CAN be a fan of someone's music and not be a fan of them personally.

Thank you. That is absolutely true.

Well, honestly, I am quite surprised. I don't recall any posts of yours that indicate that point of view.

Surprises happen every day, I suppose.

I actually think ANY way he chooses to simply sing -- in front of the band or in front of the orchestra, or just with the keyboard -- is fine with me because it is all about the voice, in my estimation. The rest is just gravy.

thebook, do you wear glasses and was the guy you were with wear glasses too? If you do, then I bumped into you. I was about 2nd/3rd row from the stage in front of the keyboard. I was with about 9+ friends. We were on the right side of the guy holding up all the albums. They practiced "I'm Okay", I'm not sure if it's going to be added. Have fun at the Clearwater show :)

Monker says:

So, why are you spending time arguing about Styx instead of propping up Dennis?

I have a question for you, why are you spending so much time nit-picking every post instead of propping up the current line up of Styx?

ChicagoStyx, Hank's a great guy, why diss him? He didn't do anything to you.

Dennis is adding more shows, I don't know the total. Does the total amount of shows really matter? I'd rather have Quality shows instead of the Quanity of shows, just my opinion

Because that's me. I think I spend PLENTY of time 'propping up the current line up of Styx" If I didn't, well, Froy would be very bored in this thread and you wouldn't have had a post to write this reply to. I don't consider it a 'nitpick' to see a fatal flaw in somebody's logic and consistantly point it out to that person. I also don't do it to 'every' post...I think I am a bit more selective in my battles then that.

Monker, I want to thank you in advance. I'm in the middle of writing one screen play. I have put that one to the side and have been writing like crazy on the second one. I don't want to give the whole story away, but you're my inspiration. Obviously I had to change the names in the story (LOL), but it has to do with a band, a message board and events that follow. I'll leave it like that. It's a thriller!!! :)

Sounds like a TRULY GREAT GREAT show. I sure wish he would bring this EVENT to Texas. I also wish he would add Born For Adventure. How he can keep this gem locked up for sooooo long is beyond me. I think he should also add Roseland, What Has Come Between Us, I'm OK, Paradise, Evil Eyes, and Golden Lark. Add these with the other lost treasures and you truly have a concert for the die-hards.

One other thing I have noticed from reading about this splendid event. Styx currently has added three covers to their set. Dennis closed with two covers. Add to this Unfinished Song which he did not write, and you have Dennis performing three songs that he did not pen!

Suite, Am I in your story????

Yogi, the last 2 songs were totally unplanned. The crowd wanted a second encore and wouldn't let up. To me, it was fun watching them off-stage discussing what songs they were going to play. It looked they were saying "I don't know what do you want to play" back and forth.

Yogi, almost every one that posts on this board and a few other interesting boards are in my story. I could actually keep the names since they're "screen" names, but I decided to change them. You'll know who you are (kidding). The postings are going to be similar. I have 3 area bands that are willing to participate. I need only one. I needed an older band that plays all original music for the soundtrack and lyrics that will be used in the postings. Most of my characters will be following around the band and also end up meeting each other at various concerts. At the beginning of the story we meet each of the "main" characters and look at their home life and their life "on-line" fascinated with this "band". We also look at the history of the band, very similar to Styx. Etc, etc............

Dennis has always seemed to have a pretty good sense of humor. It may not be that funny to us sometimes, but he does seem to amuse himself. To me thats whats important.

Since Dennis does NOT seem to mind playing other peoples songs from time to time, wouldnt it be REALLY REALLY funny the next time he has to do a second (unplanned???) encore if he would bust out 'A Criminal Mind' or 'More Love For The Money'?? That would be funny!!!!

Well, that's interesting. At least I know I inspired something in the world other then dementia.

I'm curious on how you would portray a Monker inspired character because nobody (as far as I know) here really 'knows' me. Frankly, that's intentional. On Journey forums, I'm called an inexplicable enigma...or, as Spock would say other "colorful metaphors". But, I try to be me'ish. Meaning, I don't try to post in a way that I am not. So, which bits you pick, and which bits you don't could be interesting.

Can I be in the story too? ;-)

I can't relate to your techniques, Monker. I'm pretty much what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of person. My biggets problem is getting the sarcasm/humor tone to come through the text. But most people who have met me can attest that I'm not much different "live."

Suite,

If this ever becomes a movie the little kid from American Dreams would be a good choice to play me as a young stud. My middle years could be played by a younger Michael Keaton. As for now pick between Dennis Franz or Nemo's Dad.

All these fine fine actors should be available right now to play me. As a youth I wished I was the one holding the signed that read Styx & Stoned FOREVER!!!!!!
