maybe it's me, but I thought back in 99 that Gowan was trying to sound like Dennis for what I assume is obvious reasons. But after that initial tour and Styx figured out what it was goign to be for the future, he became more comfortable in the role and was able to become himself.

When I first saw them, Gowan sang about 6 or 7 DDY songs. I liked every one of them.

Apparently there are a number of hearing-impaired members on this board.

You have my sympathy.

I saw Styx in 96/97 with Dennis.

Without Dennis it's not really Styx so I've had no interested in seeing them.

My wife saw them with Larry... didn't care for it all that much.

It's not just you, I'd have to agree. He seems to sing them now in his own natural style, which works a lot better. It's also a lot easier to appreciate his voice when he sings A Criminal Mind or his Cyclorama tracks, when there's no previous standard to compare to.

My ex boyfriend, who only knew Mr. Roboto before I met him, heard DDY's solo orchestra album and hated it (and saw his PBS special), but he liked the live Styx shows I brought him to. Just need to level the playing field a bit. :)

Well, of course... if I didn't know better I'd probably enjoy this Styx too since they are playing some of Dennis' greatest songs.

You know what they say... ignorance is bliss.

Sorry, but to me Dennis DeYoung's voice was the signature sound of Styx... even in Tommy's great songs there was usually Dennis' voice out front in the background vocals to give it that signature sound.

Mr. Roboto is one of my favorite Styx songs... I don't know why it gets slagged. It's one of those songs that non-Styx fans always seem to like though.

DeeJay....

You missed a great show. This was the 3rd show of the first tour without Dennis. I have a pretty good recording of it

Actually, To be honest, I'm glad I missed this show because I didn't have the knowledge of the break up back then....I would have expected to see Dennis, Tommy, JY, Chuck, and Todd, and I would have been disappointed to see that Tommy, JY, Glen, Larry, and Todd showed up instead....

Zan,

Please add some additional reference to the whole situation with the B/F
hating the DDY with the Orchestra thing......

1. Did he like any of DDY's songs with Styx in the 1st place ?

2. Are there other groups that have worked with Orchestras that he has liked ? or is it all Rock tunes re-done in this fashion that turn him off ?

3 Are you still with this guy, or have you moved on to someone who recognizes genius when he hears it !!!

Yes, he's heard all their music because he lived with me for over 2 years.

He has heard many orchestra performances. He thought DDY's interpretation (or execution) with it was over the top and not really very good. The Styx stuff he thought was just "ok." The new songs "Hello God," ad nauseum, he thought was, and I quote "absolute shite."

3 Are you still with this guy, or have you moved on to someone who recognizes genius when he hears it !!!

I got tickets to the DDY show and threatened to take him, so he ran away screaming.

LOL...and that shows a bit of frustration from you.

Dennis' orchestra show is not really a rock show. He also tries to do it all himself, and doesn't quite pull it off. Styx IS a rock show and there is not one single person trying to pull it all off.

That is the difference I see and probably why he didn't like Dennis' show.

How about "someone who doesn't have an adolescent-like attachment to a band that has a non-biased opinion based solely on the music?"

I long ago realized that Mr. DeYoung's voice and style are not for everyone. I personally feel that he made the band Styx unique for that reason and his absence has reduced it to just an above average rock group that performs their music, covers Classic Styx music, and now will be adding material from other sources as well.

What I love most about DDY is that sort of blend of southside Chicago boy, theatrical performer, nerd and cool guy all wrapped up in a package that can sing better than almost anyone on the planet. A guy who was gifted in many areas of music -- writing, playing, arranging, producing, performing.

Does he appeal to everyone? Hell no! But, apparently, he touches the hearts and minds of an awful lot of people and that's what counts in my book.

There are enough people who love his live show and CD to counterbalance those who despise it.

That's right. Thank you for recognizing that Dennis isn't for everyone. He IS schmaltzy and cheesy and some people don't like that - or even feel that sometimes his style TOOK AWAY from what people liked about Styx. Some also feel that he "needs" Styx just as much as Styx "needs" him. That was my point.

A couple of years ago I saw YES with an orchestra, I din't think it blended well with their style of music.

I have seen Dennis with the orchestra on DVD and believe it does go well with his.

At the same time, I can't imagine any of Tommy's or JY's music with an orchestra.

And that is part of the issue with Styx. A majority of Tommy and Jy's music is very different than Dennis' While it is the varying styles that made Styx what it was. It is also part of what tore them apart over time.

Well, those who attempt to "counterbalance" by saying others have a "lack of taste" are not doing much to help your cause.

I mean, some people like blood pudding. I would say they LIKE it because they lack a sense of taste.

Glad to see you return to form, Monker. Lumping those of us who like Dennis as all coming from the same place, the humor factor less than zero, and making absolutely no sense.

Not sure how that helps "your cause" either.

I agree with Monker here to some degree. Folks like me who would prefer Dennis as opposed to Gowan have occasionally said some things that would lend you to believe that those who prefer Gowan have no taste. I, myself, have been guilty of this in the past... I'd like to think we all have (or could) move beyond that.

I like *some* of the music put out by Styx without Dennis.... in the same way I liked Tommy's solo records. I particularly enjoyed Glen's contributions. But if you like every ounce of it and you think it's awesome - then hey thats great for you. I like Boys Will be Boys.... you like More Love For The Money.... and the world is a happy place.

Where I part ways is when people (who frankly complain about people saying New Styx has no talent, etc....) have no problem calling Dennis the Barry Mannilow of the 21st century. That is equally disrespectful. (even though Barry Mannilow is an extremely talented songwriter and musician whom I also happen to enjoy along with Marilyn Manson, Slipknot and Cradle of Filth). The attempted "disrespect" is not lost on my by comparing him to Mannilow. (OT - did you know Mannilow wrote the jingle for McDonalds "You Deserve A Break Today")?

I'm on a respect kick today... I think we should develop some... some need to do it more than others. We'll all never agree, but we should at least be able to find and enjoy the things we do agree on.

Gowan followed up his Burger King jingle with his ' please dont squeeze the Charmin jingle'. But that damn Mr. Whipple ruined it when he didnt sing the catch phrase he just spoke it.

Gowan actually sang the ' Please Dont squeeze The Charmin' jingle but people didnt like his voice so it was axed and they just went with the Mr. Whipple spoken version.

I'm full of little known facts today!!!!!

I almost forgot.... Ring Around The Collar also belongs to Gowan!!!! He has actually screwed up Blue Collar Man numerous times because of this!!

This is true.

It's not a disrespectful comparison. What is disrespectful is the intent of the person making the claim in an attempt to take away from what Dennis has contributed to the ROCK BAND Styx over his life.

I'm sorry someone else is taking me listing my fact as an opportunity to act like a 5 year old with regard to Gowan. Perhaps I shouldn't have brought it up. That'll teach me.

People never need an excuse to be ignorant.

Ah, Bugsy, my little pooka, I specificaly quoted someone earlier in this thread, who Zan replied to, and you replied to Zan in a sorta definsive mode. I was not lumping anybody together. Well, except for those who like blood pudding. So sorry if you are one of those people.

All I am saying is : "Counter balance" becomes irrelevant when all that is being done is throwing mud. The numbers don't matter, it's always just a big mess.

Not sure how that helps "your cause" either.

My 'cause' is to speak whatever is on my mind. If I like something, I may say it. If I don't, I may say that too. I'm not doing it as a 'cause'...But, you are free to think I am if you wish.

...and then Tommy wrote "If you wanna have it your way, yeah, you gotta do things my way..." But, BK did not like the lyrics and turned down the song. It seems Froy got to them first and convinced them that the song was all about kicking Dennis out of the band...just like every other song on Cyclorama.
