Are you serious? You thought JY's vocals were good on that song? I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, but you really thought it was good?

Just wondering [/quote]

I also like “It don’t make sense” I think JY does a very good job on this one. To me he sounds better on this then most of his songs. The middle of the song reminds me of “Shooz”

Then it must sound TOTALLY different from the clip that I heard.

Thanks for your opinions.

I also put up a JY picture for all you Carrot Fans - LOL This was taken in 1990 the first time that I met and talked to him. I'm right next to him in the picture and Dennis is on the other side of me. 8)

Thanks for posting this, Suite. The person who was going to record it for me got called into work and I don't know if he was able to do it or not. At least I can listen to it (in pieces) at work.

Alright, I gonna get on my soapbox here for a minute.

IMO

I've never understood all the venom sent JY's way.

True, he'll probably never be heard singing opera at the Met, but then neither would David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, The lead singer from Nazarath, etc. JY has a good ROCK voice.

He's always been my favorite stygian. His image is what first comes to mind when I think of Styx (DDY second, TS third). A big part of what I like about Wooden Nickel Styx is that he seemed to be more a the Frontman back then. I thinkit gave them more of an edge.

He's the backbone of the trademark Styx harmonies. Think of the big harmony songs; Lady, Lorilei, Rockin' the Paradise, BCM; I hear JY shoring up the harmonies in all of them.

And he's always served as a stark contrast to DDY's style and (even TS's for that matter). While DDY was the softer sensitive side of Styx, JY has always been the rowdier, ballsy ROCK side! I'm not knockin' the ballads, they're great. But I think JY provides the much needed contrast to them.

Without JY, Styx likley would have wound up being Air Supply!

Rant over! You may commence the e-bombing! :P

Well I'm not going to e-bomb. Much of what you said has merit. I think for me, the problem is JY has not kept up his vocal abilities. I think he has lost a lot of range, because of his singing style, and perhaps because he didn't necessarily take care of his voice.

As for the Air Supply comment, well, I think that might be going a bit too far, but I get your idea.

Not from me! I love JY, always have. My best friend actually thinks he has the coolest voice in Styx. She hates Dennis' songs, and is only mildly impressed with Tommy, but she loves JY's stuff.

Sorry bout that!
I meant no disrespect. I actually liked AS back in the day.
(BTW: AS frontman did a solo album around the same time as Styx's EOTC. A friend of mine thought the AS solo was Styx. probably where I got the analogy).

But a perfect example of my point is REO Speedwagon. Cronin and Ridgecrath had a similar contrast in style as DDY/JY. Ridgecrath left (actually was fired) in '89.
Two albums later was REO's Building the Bridge One rocker and the rest, soft ballads.
First song on the album was "Can't stop Rockin'" and they did right after that!

No worries. Wasn't direspectful. I just thought it was a bit of a stretch. And as for your friend, perhaps a hearing exam...just kidding.

Well the Cronin/Richrath situation was a bit different, but I do agree JY brought the "rock" to Styx. If he left, I think the band would still have been able to produce some rock songs...just not necessarily along the same lines as JY.

On a side note, while it was noted that JY has been the only member to be on all the albums, I think that speaks more to his own ambition. Neither good nor bad. JY always struck me as a man who compromised his own ideas of music to get to a larger audience. Perhaps that's good, perhaps not.

Yep and REO is done just like STYX they both made bad mistakes
Not so much the Gary thing but doing all ballads
Styx tried the opposite route and they have failed as well
Thats why they both tour together they both can relate to failure

Separating out JY the musician/peformer from JY the spokesperson, I will say that I agree about a lot of this. His voice as harmony back-up was impeccable. As the lead singer...ehhh.... I am not so impressed, with a few exceptions.

I also think the Styx "sound" was built on the powerhouse voice of Dennis DeYoung. The fact that it is no longer there is very noticeable to me. MHO only!!

It does? What does JY's solo unsuccess have to do with what he contributed to the Styx sound?

I would say that the 'success' of both Tommy's and Dennis' careers outside of Styx affected the Styx sound a LOT more the JY not having much success at all. Dennis moved Styx in his direction for EotC and Tommy moved Styx in his direction for BNW.

Okay,

So Dennis and Tommy having success changes the Styx sound, but JY's lack thereof doesn't? Can't have it both ways.

Let me say, too , that I do admire a die-hard fan like Yogi, who loves IT ALL. (While we are dwelling in capsland).

Yogi was a fan the day Dennis yelled into the Panozzo's window "Hey, bring ya stuff down to MY house. I play better than that guy with you right now!" (Or words to that effect.) And if those 3 teens had made a record, Yogi would probably own it!

I don't agree that what is touring and recording under the Styx name is truly Styx anymore, but I admire that devotion and that loyalty to the band no matter who is in it. And his continued support of both Dennis and Glen. And that he has a sense of humor about it all.
:)

Explain why JY's solo career affected Styx, if you truely believe that...which I have my doubts. It's a good one-liner, but I doubt it has anything behind it.

I explained why I thought Tommy's and Dennis outside projects affected Styx. Tommy's efforts in DY definitly affected Edge...since he wasn't there Tommy's success in DY, Shaw Blades, and even 7DZ seemed to boost his confidence enough to challenge Dennis' authority to the point where he and JY took control of the band.

JY's solo career is insignificant...in every way, including how it affected Styx. But, that does NOT mean JY had no influence in Styx, especialy before Kilroy.

If the above were true, then many Styx songs prior to Cyclorama are NOT Styx songs simply because Dennis is not the lead singer and they were not bulit around his voice.

IMO, the "Styx sound" was a combination of ALL of their talents and what they uniquely brought to the band. To raise one above the others is to really diminish the others in favor of the one...and in the process, diminishing the talent of Styx as a whole.

Monker,

I suppose I was trying to counter Yogi's bringing up the fact that JY has the Styx 'perfect attendence' award by showing he has more of a reason to be there for EVERYTHING.

I agree that JY is a key ingredient in the "Styx sound" which is why many people have trouble with them changing ANY of the components.

Perhaps if JY had an equal amount of solo 'success' the pull from the three camps would have at least cancelled each other out, resulting in a more "Classic" sound rather than a skewed "solo" sound.
