Random thoughts after watching the rebroadcast of Live 8

How amazing COULD it have been if John Lennon were still alive to get him an Paul on stage together for a set ?

Speaking of Amazing, why is it that Paul looks a good 10 years younger than his contemporaries ? .... Townsend, Daltrey, Gilmour Waters etc.....
If it's plastic surgery, he found a better than average surgeon !
( seen Marie Osmond lately ? yikes !!! )

Roger looked a lot happier about the gig that David did........

Is it really still the Who without both Keith Moon and John Entwistle ?

How did Snoop Dogg get so famous without having any discernable talent ?

Where were the Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, and the entire Corporate Rock scene ?

And my biggest questions.......if they do this type of concert in another 20 years, who will be the big draws to make it worthwhile ? most of these guys will be 6 feet under, except U2.....can't really see Green Day, or any of the other acts being of show headliner quality. Will we see an 85 year old Paul still leading the chorus of Hey Jude ?

Well I would like to think a SIR Lawrence Gowan led Styx could headline the UK as an end of their year long 25yr "We're still here Froy" tour
A poor froy will have to be sedated in his bath-chair, watching live in the "Mr Roboto home for the mentaly bewildered" after repeatedly shouting "enjoy it while you can, it won't last" and upsetting other inmates. Only calming down when the US concert starts with DDY opening with Babe "I'd like to dedicate this to my wife Suzanne, we've been married for..........................zzzzzzzzzz, he could do Mr Roboto on his motorised buggy on the stage LOL
SERIOUSLY can you imagine what these guys will look like in 20yrs time :)

And that is the concern of the record industry as there are very few acts that have any sustained audience.

Remember last summer in the US there were virtually no "pop" acts touring not because there were no music releases but because most of the acts were considered passe.

It's a different era we live in. Success is instant, longevity is nearly impossible. A song like Lady, which took weeks to achieve a national audience would never make it today...simply because the criteria has changed. A song or artist has to "pop" immediately on the radio (with or without tremendous push from their label). How many songs stay at number one on the radio for more than a two weeks now? And when you factor in that there is greater emphasis on having eye candy quality over true talent, it isn't surprising that there will be few icons in 20 years. Just my .02

In 20 years, the guys in Styx could still play and sing, but the labels would prob, have some one in the vids, and some young group lip singing on stage in a "The Music of Styx as Lip Sung"-ERIC

I have to say, I don't agree. No disrespect meant to the men in the band, but in 20 years thed' be in their mid 70's and Larry would be in his mid 60's I believe. It's doubtful they'd be able to sustain the level of their voices by then. But hey, what a nice thought.

What I find interesting between Live Aid and Live 8, 20 years apart, is the mega-bands/artists who participated were largely the same ones. The enduring artists were the classic rock artists from the 60's and 70's -- Elton, Paul McCartney, U2, Sting, Daltrey/Townshend, even Madonna, etc.

Will the likes of the Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, Keane etc. endure in another 20 years? I do not think so. And it was fun to see the young audience respond to the classic artists and the classic songs.

Though there were some really top notch performances from some of the newer artists (Green Day stands out, though they are "almost" classic, lol), overall I was unimpressed or simply turned off by them.

Give me Sir Paul and Bono singing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" ANY day over the Dogg or the Big Willie Style. Sheesh!

I was disappointed with Live 8. I thought they bit off too much. Live Aid was about music. Live 8 was about banal vj's, bad interviews and boring news clips. Thank god I tivo'd it. In the first 2 hours we got only 8 songs..

With so many bands, many of them didn't get television exposure at all. Of those that did, most only got one song or less.

I also feel that Live 8 didn't get much world press. I spoke with many people after the fact that had no idea what it was.

Plus I was yelling at the television when the vj's cut in to the Pink Floyd reunion to talk about ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!

That was the reason VH1 and MTV combined to show 10 totally uninterrupted hours of as much of the concert as they could fit in yesterday. Some groups and artists still got left out, but they showed the entire Pink Floyd set, for example.

I agree, Dave, that the concert itself did not hold a candle to Live Aid, but it had its moments and it most certainly was superbly organized.

The most affecting moment of the whole thing, to me, was when they showed footage of the African famine from the original Live Aid, and ended on the face of a dying, starving girl. Bob Geldof then came on and said that, because of the money Live Aid raised, she survived. And then he brought a beautiful woman onstage who was this same little girl. Really amazing and touching.

I wonder about this sort of thing all the time. I'm not sure, but I think the Backstreet Boys have sold more total albums than Styx. I have a tough time picturing them touring twenty years from now like Styx is now. Same with the other flavor of the day bands. It will be interesting to see, if I'm fortunate to make it that long myself :D

the VH1 recap of just the music was great. Great to see a reunited Pink Floyd, even if David Gilmour looked pissed off. Paul is da man, and I have never seen him do Helter Skelter live, worth the wait alone. I actually though Rob thomas and Maroon 5 were good too.

Deep Purple had a great set here in Canada. They were one of 2 bands that got so much response, so they were almost allowed an encore.
The kids saw the band from whom they probably just knew 'Smoke on the water'.They also payed 'Highway star" and 'Hush'.There will be a lot of
new Deep Purple fans attending a DP show, next time they roll into town.
Jesus loves you ,but everybody else thinks you're a knob.
