Radio Play

Postby tspallone » Thu May 11, 2006 12:53 pm

I just want to go on record to other Toto fans that I've repeatedly requested that Simple Life be played on a local radio station here (WHUD New York) and they were sort of rude and claimed, "We don't play that song". After many requests, they finally replied "You can request and request, it's not being played".

This song fits in PERFECTLY will this particular sugar-loaded station.

That's right WHUD in Poukeepsie, New York.

All I can say is, WTF?

Well that's the whole problem being a fan of Toto isn't it? You tell someone you like Toto, and they inevitibly start whistling Africa, but the radio stations don't want anything to do with them. I listen to that same station and I keep thinking how Pamela would be perfect alongside Celine Dion. And even though we all know how hard Toto can rock, try requesting them to a classic rock station. Ahhhhhh, the joys of coporate radio.

Cheer up, it could be worse, at least you're not a Zebra fan like me!

Well, The media in Usa specially the radio is fucked up about Toto. You know Toto has so many songs that would fit to Radio and could be really really big hits but they don't play them.

Luke one's Told that there was a radio station playing Don't chain my heart back in 93 when it was realesed in Usa. But suddenley they stopped playing it and fans were asking why? And the Host was not allowed to play Toto.

So what the fuck is up with the Radio in Usa? Is there some sort of consipiration among radiochannels among there?

It's simple, MONEY. Toto, as commercial as they can be, didn't play by the rules, they dared to to what they wanted. They actually enjoy what they do. Also, they figured out that they have a very loyal fan base, more so in outside of the US, and realized that sucking up to the whims of the labels wouldn't help them any. It's for that reason that I support them. And the fact that they have damm good music! Most of these commercial radio stations have a database of songs and it's not that they don't want to go outside the box, they can't. Hence when they have request hours, you'll only hear the requests that they have in there database, you won't even know about those requests for Simple Life, or Pamela. Hell, most of these stations don't even have DJ's anymore.

Interesting...I specifically recall hearing "Don't Chain My Heart" on KTYD in Santa Barbara, CA back in the day...then about a month later calling the radio station to request it and the dj / phone people saying "Ohhh you want to hear Toto??!?!? No way!"...what a douche-bag

With regards to Simple Life - I think the single (Bottom of Your Soul) has a better chance of getting played than anything else....Also, it's funny, but I think (and I could be wrong) but outside of "Bottom of your Soul", the band wasn't terribly interested in radio play...Maybe on some cool XM radio stations...

Yea its very strange but I can agree with it's all about money. It seems like Toto spent som bucks to a new promotion office wich got them to do some tv apperence in the Us but if theyed want a hit they would have to pay a huge amount of money.

But I still find it strange that no older songs like pamel that actually was quite a big hit in Us don't get any radio play.

And Sony has fucked up Toto's careere in Us.

Remember The seventh one record Why in the whole fucking world didn't they realese Stop loving you as a single. In the rest of the world Stop loving you is almost more recognised by people than Rossanna and was one of the most succesful songs in Europe and japan 1988.

I'm 100 % it would have made it to the top 10 but Sony Usa has always done all the wrong things for Toto.

Here in Sweden Bottom of your soul actually got quite a bit of airplay and the same for a couple of other European countries but I don't understand whats u with the readio in Usa.

Well, Simple Life hasn't been released as a single, so you can't expect that to get any airplay. Bottom of Your Soul was the single and I don't think they are really promoting it on U.S. radio. I'm guessing there are only a handful of U.S. radio stations that have Falling In Between or Bottom of Your Soul. It looks like Bottom of Your Soul and a few other Falling In Between tracks were played on XM radio but that is about it...

As for some of the older songs, Stop Loving You definitely should have been a U.S. single...

Pamela gets virtually no U.S. airplay these days. It gets played on adult contemporary stations once in a blue moon.

Toto is unpopular is the U.S. for a lot of reasons, including:

1. They are a faceless band;
2. They never had a core fanbase; when the radio stopped playing them (see points 3,4,5,6,7), most of their fans left;
3. They've changed singers WAY too many times, causing radio/people lose interest; they are about as bad as Black Sabbath (my favorite group).
4. The music they've put out has been very marginal over the last 20 years (as much as I personally like it), particularly over the last 15 years;
5. The US doesn't like that type of music;
6. They are old;
7. Their music is not immediately distinctive.

Deal with 1-7 and they'll be on the radio.

Thanks for the butally honest opinion...wonderful how you've adjusted to the modern "State of the 'State'". Curious....How are you getting your musical fixes, domestically, these days?

The radio is a waste of time.. bad music, commericals.. that's why I buy cds. Most of the stuff I have is quality end to end.

Toto is largely a radio band and their choices just killed them commercially.. now, points 1-7 are pretty much irreversible.

We should be happy we got the music we've gotten. After all they put out a very timely IV on the back of the dismal Hydra and Turn Back, probably averting the collapse of the band.

I think they are a band that can produce good music now and then. I enjoy most of their records. They've had their time in the sun.

Toto could probably gain nostalgic support in the US nowadays if they toured their butts off relentlessly for years on end. At least that way people would really know they're still around and make decent music.

Besides, no music company in their right mind is going to shell out millions (or anything really) for any band which such high risk hoping people hear something they like -- you have to earn it.

Anyways, the band probably (and reasonably) doesn't care enough about success to make that kind of Herculean effort.
