Styx early 90s look

Postby Toph » Thu Jul 02, 2009 1:39 am

Came across this video for Love At First Sight...

http://www.singingfool.com/Player.aspx? ... did=531504

Obviously their stylist was having them go after the late 80s/early 90s hair band look....Take a look at DeYoung's hair - its longer than it was for the Paradise Theatre, but for Paradise it was all one length, here it is a total mullet!! Check out Burtnik - total hair band look....even JY has the ultra teased look. Maybe they were trying a little too hard to be "relevent" in their look here?!? Of course, Dennis with the suit, still looks hopelessly trapped in the early 80s....can't quite pull "hair band" off....

I agree this was very much of the time, for better or worse, but one thing I will say is that this was the first time Styx had ever looked like everyone belonged in the same band. The imaging of the group prior to this was just . . . I don't even know what to say about it. Looking through old shots to select pictures for my book, I kept shaking my head and thinking, 'WHAT in the WORLD are you wearing?' LOL. I've always thought part of the reason the band is viewed as "uncool" is simply because the visual presentation is just so . . . uncool.

I hope all is well.

Oh how right you are! Some of the stage clothing choices....ok, offstage, too....were, uhm, really goofy. But, again, they reflected the look of lots of those kinds of bands in the 70's. My avatar is my favorite look on Dennis from that era. Jeans and a baseball jersey. Should have been what he wore all the time, LOL!

I think they must have had some image consulting for the early 90's look they sported. But the mullet ruled then, so what can anyone say? They wuz down wit' it, then. I will say I liked how Dennis looked in the Show Me the Way video. Not terribly OTT in my view.

At one time or another, I had this video posted on my youtube page, but it got pulled by the powers that be.

All the Edge videos were good.

Tommy was a bit fashion challenged during the Paradise tour, remember the greeen jump suit. For the encore, I think he came out in these tight red pants with cowboy boots on. I think he pants were tucked into the boots.....egad......

Right - cuz that's how they wore boots in the 80s. lol

I still want to see him throw on one of those old jumpsuits for grins. I'm sure, unlike anyone else in the band, that he can still fit into them.

Agree 100%. I mean there were literally some shots - even on the albums that I just wondered WTF? Tommy Shaw literally looks like a girl in some of those shots. And they didn't know whether Dennis should look like some mad wizard or like your hippy 8th grade science teacher..John Panozzo's hair...wow how did he ever get a pick through that mane....and JY - gotta love the straight combed down look of Cornerstone...

Other things that I would seriously question their publicist about..... #1 with a bullet - the dedication "For Paul" on First Time, a song that talks about being alone next to the fire, not to be afraid, etc. and then it's dedicated to another dude?!!? Flags went up to me and my friends as we were convinced that was a coming out of the closet song to his mysterious lover "Paul"...

I think that while they were great at what they did/do...they were fairly tame for a rock band. Almost as if they tried to make themselves look like the image of the decade dictated (pick any decade they've been around)...without any real guidance on how to do that. LOL,

As for the dedication on First Time...of all the songs that could have been dedicated to Sir Paul...that one always seemed to be such an odd choice for such a dedication.

Ah well...and the band plays on.

Because it blew, sorry, but it did...
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Don't apologize to me. As much as I like Dennis...I always feel like I'm going into a diabetic coma with that song.
