Two surprises for me. One, that Desert Moon made the list at all. Glad to see it on there. Two, that SMTW was not ranked higher for that year. It was certainly played a lot on the radio, even where I live.

I think Show Me suffered a similar cross over year problem like Babe - some of its airplay would have been credited to 1990.

If I remember correctly the video was in pretty heavy rotation on MTV as well. So I am not surprised that it made the list. I think Dennis made a big mistake in not touring to support that album. Had he done that, I think the album and the single would have done better. But from what Dennis has said he was not looking to be a solo artist so I guess that is why he chose not to tour in support of it.

Evidently he had a spot to open up for Huey Lewis and the News for their tour of Sports (which was a HUGE album in 1984). Then he hurt his back filming DWFH and that combined with his dislike of touring and being an opening act was enough to have him not to it. HUGE MISTAKE!!!

Other big mistake with the DWFH single - should have eliminate that middle part - where is slows down with an extended music interlude then goes into "I've got my dreams..." with that computer voice. Should have cut that back significantly or entirely - it kills the energy in the song and I am sure hurt it significantly at top 40 radio.

Even though I did not like it that much Dear Darling should have been released after Desert Moon. Every soft song Dennis had released up to that point( with Styx) was massively successful. I believe that it would have cracked the top 10. Then Dont Wait For Hereos would have hit much higher, follow that up with Gravity and the Desert Moon album would have been HUGE!!!

The biggest surprise for me was "Renegade" - although it only hit #16, it must have stayed on the charts a LONG time to be able to have been one of the top 100 for the year. Kudos to them on that. Give Tommy credit for 2 of the band's biggest hits.

Despite its comparably low chart peaking, I think we can include Renegade as one of Styx's biggest hits. It certainly has stood the test of time (of course the current band playing it to death has something to do with that too).

I think this list provides a good glimpse as to really what the biggest hits of Styx were. It is the list that the person who is now between 35-50 knows as the biggest hits of Styx. Some have stood the test of time longer, but I doubt you find anyone that came of age in the late 1970s and 1980s that doesn't know these 10 songs.

Lady
Come Sail Away
Renegade
Babe
Best Of Times
Too Much Time On My Hands
Mr. Roboto
Don't Let It End
Desert Moon (DDY)
Show Me The Way

With Dennis solo you hear all 10 of these, with Styx you get 4. Say what you want about Dennis, but he at least knows what his biggest songs are/were.

Desert Moon is one of DDY's ballads that has not taken as big a critical hit as some of his others. I think the lyrics resonate with a lot of people. And that video was very popular back in the day.

At one point, there was an "official" UMG posting of Desert Moon on YouTube and it was right up there in popularity and views with the biggest Styx hits before it was yanked. There seems to be a new "official" one up that has over 100,000 views. Not Justin Bieber, but not bad.

I thought the same thing.

I wonder if they have performed a single show since at least 1999 without playing it. It seems no matter what the setlist variation, we're sure to get Fooling Yourself, Blue Collar Man, Renegade, Crystal Ball, Too Much Time On My Hands and Boat on a River. Great songs as they may be... they could shake it up once in awhile. Although GI/POE was a nice change of pace it still covered 5 out of 6 with Too Much Time being played as an encore. I'm surprised they didn't find a away to get Boat on a River in there as well.

I've seen Styx seven times and have never seen them do Boat On The River. Of those seven times, only twice did I see them play Crystal Ball.

I stand corrected. I guess it's more of a live CD and DVD thing.

I hope they come back to the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA and play. I missed them when they played there in 08 and I think they played there even another time before that. It's exactly the kind of venue they play.
