There's plenty of that all over the album but you've found other reasons to knock those tunes. No shocker that you don't like the album... I could have placed that bet a few years back. You simply *don't like him* and thus it clouds your view of his music.

THIS burns my ass. Why? because I listened to the fucking CD - HOPING, PRAYING EVEN, that I would find it as awe-inspiring (or...HALF as good) as some of you people did, for the mere FACT that if I DIDN'T, I was would be accused of having "clouded judgement." I didn't KNOCK any songs. I said the album is inconsistant, and if you can't handle hearing THAT, you're in for a barage of disappointment when you finally move out of your parents basement and get into the real world.

Let me 'splain this to you, Lucy:

My feelings or lack of feelings thereof for Dennis DeYoung are influenced by my feelings about his music, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. I generally DON'T like his style in the last twenty years. I went to his f'ing show, and I wrote a POSITIVE REVIEW about it afterwards. GET A SOLID GRIP, dude. DEAL with the reality that Dennis cannot reverse the tides or change the planetary alignment. His farts smell, and he has morning breath like everyone else. He doesn't have the capability to produce songs that everyone and anyone will enjoy and that will end world hunger. I know it's hard to accept, but it's true. And knowing is half the battle, GI Joe.

The CD is "okay." It doesn't flat-out suck, but it didn't bring me to climax either. Deal with it. I did.

Depends on the artist. Some folks don't write from personal experience at all. Some do, but are a little more circumspect about it.

Agreed. A little more figurative, a little less literal, please.

So what your saying is some musicians don't love there family's enough to write a song for them?

I'd call that a radical interpretation of the text.

I loved Cyclorama. A much more cohesive album than BNW was (altho, I liked half of that one too). A few songs didn't give me the warm fuzzies - they either fell short of greatness or didn't hit the spot - like "Waiting for Our Time," for example - blah. To me, the song had nothing special going on in it. Over time, I have gotten tired of some of the songs ("More Love for the Money" and "Yes I Can," to name 2 which I used to love, but now I can take or leave) but grown to like others more (like "Captain America"), which only proves how subjective music really is (and that Styx music in general, is an acquired taste, even for this fan)

I still think songs like "One With Everything," "KYAG," and "These Are the Times" kick ass.

I also really, really love "Killing the Thing That You Love."

I agree with you on these tunes. All 3 were very good. I also think this album wouldn't have been half as good if Glen had not been all over it. His background vocals were great. I don't think the current lineup will top Cyclorama if they do another album. Glen was just too damn good.

Glen's tracks are the only tracks I really cared about on the album. As I mentioned before, I didn't even purchase it because it wasn't Styx to me, but I did get Glen's songs. The other only song that I really cared for on that album was Tommy's "Yes I can".

For me, Yes I Can is corn syrup covered in maple syrup. Gives DDY a run for his money. One with Everything on the other hand is a fine Styx tune and was great to hear on the CYO concert on HD Net.

This sums up my thoughts on this CD......(Reviewer) "As a pop-rock record, DeYoung sings remarkably silly lyrics over dull, polished studio music" .

He should stick to what he does best...ballads and broadway. He is not the same person who wrote that great music from 75-78, 81 so this CD is about what I expected. I like a few things but for the most part this CD bores me to death. I need interesting music. I'll take Rush's latest any day over this. And for that matter, I'll take any Tool over this.

This is the same type of review that many Styx albums have received from rock critics over the years. Heck, the Grand Illusion was panned by some of the biggest critics for similar reasons. I like this review of a Styx Album from a rock critic:

"Overall, XXX is quintessential Styx, bursting with the overwrought guitar and syrupy harmony that made them one of the biggest and cheesiest bands..."

Guess which album the reviewer is referring to?

I gotta know!

Hey, my non-Styx fan husband listened to DDY's CD tonight. Had this to say, and I quote:

"He doesn't have the right kind of voice for rock. It's a bit like Don McLean trying to sing AC/DC."

He did like the softer, adult contemporary stuff a little more. Said it was more suited for him.

Yo Zanski,

I hate to point out the brutally obvious but you have forced my hand.

No one here gives a shit if the Newbie likes Dennis's new music. Play it for your Ex, and the current boyfriend and then report back!!!!

P.S. Your arguments would be taken much more seriously with a beautiful baby up there as opposed to some stupid bananna.

I calls 'em like I sees 'em, sister.

It's one thing to like this line-up and support them. But to say they're better without Dennis, especially by someone with the word Styx in their screen name is just idiocy.

It's like the dipsticks I've seen who say they think Bad Company *after* Paul Rodgers is better. It's absurd. That band was a shadow of itself without Rodgers and their very existence was due mostly to the talent and the hard work of Paul Rodgers.

Not all that much different from Dennis in Styx.
