Styx in Milwaukee Feb 14th 2005

Postby froy » Wed Feb 16, 2005 12:39 am

Dennis DeYoung brought his version of Styx to Milwaukee on Monday night in an intiment setting
in front of 500 friends and family,

The entire setlist except for Desert Moon was Styx material,
For the first time ever Dennis brought out the gem Pieces of Eight.

I have waited 28 years to hear this song and with the orchestra it was performed perfectly.

Its a shame Tom and Jim could not perform on this one there loss.

Once again the show stopper for me was Castle Walls .
Dennis explained that this song was inspired by the movie the Exorsist
which now makes total sense its a shame Tom and Jim were nowhere to be found they missed out on playing on this one but Dawn Marie is much better looking than Tom anyway and she sings better also.

Right before Madame Blue was performed which Jim and Tom missed out on Dennis explained about the Lost Treasures show in Chicago in March he said that there will be 5 gems that he has never sung live brought into the setlist
Its a shame Jim and Tom won't be able to be part of this as they have there medley to do.

After the show we had a chance to meet Dennis and he signed my setlist which is now in my office.

Also I had the pleasure to meet Suite Madame Blue and Kansas 666 at the show
It was nice to put a face behind there names.

Here is the setlist that Jim and Tom missed out on

The important thing is that you're not bitter. LOL

I'm sure "Tom and Jim" are very distraught over missing the opportunity to play for 500 people also. :-D

Why was this concert sooo short? Why did they have a time limit? Was there a warmup band? At least when Jim, Tommy & Company do their 90 minute set they have REO, Frampton, Billy Squire, Bad Company, Journey etc coming in in front or behind them.

It sounds like a GREAT show, but he didnt play much. Was this like a warmup for his spring/summer tour???

So Froy, what did you REALLY think of the show ?

I'm not sure I can go along with your statement that Dawn Marie sings better than "Tom" but she's DEFINATELY nicer to look at !

Sounds like a great show, and just meeting Dennis alone was worth the effort to get there...........I was under the impression you had met him previously, was I mistaken ?

Suite, and Kansas, I'm very interested in your perspective.....did you also
get to spend a minute with Dennis ?

There is a time limit when you do a casino show. The casinos limit anyone to 90 minute sets because they want people to gamble. It's this way regardless fo who the act is.

Although, I do suppose it's easier to fill a 500 seat venue when you have a lot of friends. ;-)

At most casinos, they keep the shows at 90 minutes to draw the crowds in and then keep the fans after to gamble. Just like Sadie and Froy said.

The Green Bay show should be around 2 1/2 hours, Amick will be at this show so Dennis' Hunchback music will be included.

The show was AWESOME, like every Dennis show that I've been at

I was fortunate to be there early and catch the sound check. It was such a treat to hear the band practice "Pieces of Eight". What a GREAT addition to the show. I LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT!!!!! I really like the addition in the middle of the song, I don't know the name of the piece, it might be from The Nutcracker, the Russian dance or something. They were speeding up the music and it really worked great within the song. It was also great to see/hear Dennis play the keyboards during this song too. "Castle Walls" and "Suite Madame Blue" were also AWESOME!!

Yes, Froy was only a couple feet from Dawn Marie throughout the whole show.

This show was meant for just 500 people, they wanted to make it very intimate show and it was. The show sold out with the Pre-sale tickets before they ever went on sale for the general public. The $110 seats were the first to sell out. That's pretty good.

Yes, I was backstage, I didn't talk to Dennis that much, mostly Suzanne.

I met Froy and Dave at the concert, they're really nice guys and it was a pleasure to meet them face to face. It turns out that I was sitting right behind Dave during the concert.

It's really nice to put a face with a name from these boards

Adam, Adam, Adam...let it go. Where either plays only matters to those who see them. This argument gets so twisted it isn't even funny.

Dennis with Styx wouldn't play casinos I believe was the original argument. Neither is the draw they once were. Don't take the bait. Just enjoy.

I guess I don't see the big deal about this. Dennis performs a private show for 500 people. So? The song list isn't that much of a change.

It's nice that a few people on the forum saw him...But, I don't see this as any more significant then any other show he has performed.

Also, not all 'casino' shows are limited to 90mins. A couple years ago, Styx performed at the local casino here...They performed their full set, outside, for a few thousand people...and the track seats inside It was definitely NOT a situation where the casino was just using the band to draw people to gamble, wanting them to quickly perform and get it over with.

Correct only Pieces of 8 was added and because of the venue's 90 min time limit songs were dropped

It wasn't unless you met him back stage and got a setlist signed like I did
it was just a greatest hits show
The one in March will be much different.

It wasn't a private show Monker. The tickets sold out on a presale. With 500 to sell, that's not bad for anyone.

Second...casino shows are NORMALLY only 90 minutes, unless the casino has arranged something different with the act involved. No one here said Styx was only brought in to get people to gamble. It is the philosophy of the casino that ties the act to 90 minutes so they will stay to gamble.

The show was slightly different because of fitting an orchestra and the band on the stage and giving the folks that went a much closer view than at a regular show of his. Not a monumental distinction to be sure, but that was the difference.

Now, let everyone play where they want, enjoy the music and share the fun with everyone here

Peace,

The piece of music in the middle of Pieces of Eight is "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from the Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg.

Sometimes I have heard this piece of music referred to as the Troll Dance or such --- hmmm....wonder if he dedicated it to Jim and Tom? KIDDING!!! I KID!!

Sounds like a very enjoyable show.

Doesn't matter the venue in my book. Was the show good is the benchmark.

I honestly believe Dennis and the Current Styx both put on great, professional, enjoyable shows. Period. They have all been doing this a long time.

Oh, I keep forgetting, you never see a big deal with a few people getting excited about a show they enjoyed!! You're always so darn negative about everything. The biggest change was adding "Pieces of Eight", that was a big deal to me. That's great it wasn't a big deal to you, thank you for your usual positive comments. What's Carrot Styx going to add on this next tour?

Monker says:

Actually it was more than a FEW people on this forum, there were a few "peeps" (people that don't post) on here that were there last night.

Well to me, it was very special, I had my Mom with me, a few close friends and a few friends that never seen his show before. And I got to meet a few people from the boards. Again, he added "Pieces of Eight", that was very special too.

I didn't think I posted ALL casino shows are limited to 90 minutes. I thought I posted MOST casino shows were. I guess each casino varies from one another.

To coincide with Froy's 1,000 post Styx will be unvieling their 1,000 different version of Blue Collar Man. Tommy has promised to play this song surrounded by over 1,000 Africanized Bees which accounts for the buzzing sound found on this version.
