I would definately think this list would be a LOT larger than the list of those who DID suceed equally or greater. But it is really difficult to define successes in this business. Maybe the sales numbers aren't there, but if an artist is selling enough to keep doing it, then that could be construed as success. And if the artist is happy and healthy and creative and secure, then that would certainly be a success.
Geoff Tate of Queensryche certainly has not acheived sucess as a solo artist. But, then again, he is also still with QR.
Jani Lane left Warrant to be a solo artist. Not even close. In fact, I would bet that, although Jani is an incredible songwriter for that genre, Warrant without him will do better.
Someone mentioned ABBA. Well Agnetha also went solo. Has quite a few CDs, but would never equal ABBA. And the two guys still work together doing plays, musicals, whatever. They have recently received the equivelent of a Tony for their work, but that does not equal the sales success of ABBA.
Damn Yankees were successful, but since they only put out two CDs compared to STYX' catalog, there is no chance to equate the two.
The list goes on...
