STYX AND STONES

Great minds think alike. Styx and The Rolling Stones will both have similarly titled albums in 2005.

In May, Styx released their album 'Big Bang Theory'. In September, the Rolling Stones will release 'A Bigger Bang'.

While the Styx album is a covers record top heavy with 60's English songs, it doesn't include any Stones songs. 'Big Bang Theory' features The Beatles 'I Am The Walrus', The Who's 'I Can See For Miles', Free's 'Wishing Well', 'Jethro Tull's 'Locomotive Breath', Blind Faith's Can't Find My Way Home' and Procol Harum's 'A Salty Dog'.

The Stones album will be their first studio album since 1997's 'Bridges To Babylon'.

I am not a big fan of covers CDs but I am less of a Stones fan.

Fair enough, but something tells me the Stones get a heck of a lot more milage out of this than Styx will.

I think at this point the Stones are pretty much excess mileage.

The Stones are the type of band that retain a LARGE 'cult' following. Maybe it is the death watch, the morbid curiosity that someone may actually drop dead on stage (I kid) but a LOT of people will continue to see the Stones as long as they are 'doin' it'. And many of them will also buy the CD regardless.

Bands like Styx and Journey retain a certain following that are the same, but it is much smaller. Of course much of that was hurt by the lead singer changes in both bands.

On this topic of radio play -- according to today's Media Base figures, Classic Rock:

#1 - Rolling Stones - Rough Justice - 451 spins - >7 million listening base

#3 - Styx - Can't Find My Way Back Home - 102 spins - >900,000 listening base

Note -- this song has the highest number of spins recorded than any of the other Styx songs released from Big Bang Theory. Kudos to them! This one is, I think, the best song on the album. MHO only.

What kind of stations are playing Styx? Because here, Classic Rock won't touch anything new because people don't know the words....*smacks head* Maybe they are playing it on the CR stations because it is a cover that everyone DOES know the words to.

To be among the top 25 cities (by population) we are small potatoes in the world of radio stats--meaning we're a follower not a leader. Styx on CR here? If it's not Renegade, Snowblind, Come Sail Away, or Lady, forget it. Play something new? Wouldn't hear of it! Even the covers? What are you talking about--several of the original versions are still in our (limited) rotation!

I've pretty much given up on CR here. It's either a tape/CD, one of the "new" rock stations, or maybe the Contemporary Christian station.

Its the same here EE. CR won't play anything new by a CR act. But there is a chance since it is a cover tune. But I have only heard Walrus once...and that was on VH1. I have heard NOTHING new from Styx in the radio since...........damn, Edge Of The Century!! I heard none of Def Leppard's "X", I heard NONE of Journey's Arrival or Red 13 (In fact, the big CR station promoted the Journey show that year as the Peter Frampton show ).

But it was honestly in the middle of the post that it dawned on me why "covers" are so popular for groups with longevity. but I am still against a full CD of them personally.
