I can't figure how else these stations can continue to survive. What little they play that I like, I already own on CD and can listen to it whenever I want to!

Are you guys ever right about the CR stations playing the same stuff over & over & over & over &...! I think you've hit the nail on the head here. I imagine that the majority of those who listen to CR stations don't own that much CR music themselves. I wonder how much of that is the result of the medium switchover, from albums/tapes to CDs/mp3? Back in the day for most of those bands we consider Classic Rock, CDs weren't available or were just starting to make an appearance on the scene. Most of these fans probably owned (and may still own) the LPs but have very few of them on CD. Styx is a prime example; I owned the A&M LPs, bought them when they came out, but didn't purchase the CDs when they came out because, well LPs & players were still easy to come by & much cheaper than the new equipment. Why waste my money? It's not like they were actually going to replace LPs with CDs, or anything.

As a die hard and yes over sensitive Beatles fan, I think much of the criticism, like several of the other bands lies in radio stations playing the same song sets of these bands over and over (Hey Jude, Yesterday, Revolution, I am the Walrus, etc). To non believers, I say give a complete listen to Revlover or Rubber Soul. Blow off Pepper, even a die hard like myself, has trouble getting into the right mood to hear that one. That being said:

Classic rock acts that deserve the praise they get:
Beatles
Rolling Stones (Gimme Shelter one of the best ever)
Pink Floyd
Eagles
Elton John
Yes
Led Zep (maybe a bit over rated)
Prince (I still hold in high regard, Around the world in a day very underated)
REM
CS&N
Clapton

Radio has killed (unfortunately):
fleetwood Mac (no more dreams please)
Heart
Jethro Tull
Steve Miller (like he says, I did stuff besides the greatest hits)

Radio needs to kill:
Bruce Springsteen (shut up and sing)
U2 (shut up and sing)
Madonna (just shut up)
Michael Jackson (fill in the blanks here)
Grateful Dead

Underated classic rock:
STYX
Boston
Rush
America
Journey
REO Speedwagon
Chicago
Foriegner

L.o.D.A.,

Other than Prince, Great list ! Loved U2's music up to around 1990......
it was all downhill after that.

America and Chicago were 2 of the best groups of the 70's, and are totally underappreciated ( aka: Forgotten ) by most today.

I can't understand why Jethro Tull is almost universally disliked on this board...their sound is Classic Rock through and through, and Ian's voice and flute playing are awesome IMO. I really miss the Flute solo in Styx version of Locomotive Breath ( but it's still a good cover of a great song )

Thanks Neal (especially if he is god)

Classic, I like Tull, just the radio stations killed them, they did other stuff besides thick as a brick and aqua lung. I get tired of the Beatles too on the radio, several stations run shows down here in Louisiana, like Beatles Thursday and Breakfast with the Beatles, I like a little surprise on the radio sometimes. It would be awesome if they launched into Helter Skelter, And Your Bird Can Sing, for no one, or one of the other less known Beatle tunes. Be nice if the classic rock stations would play something besides come sail away, renegade and Lady by STYX. Ah thank god for CD players in the cars.
