Styx in Elkhorn

Postby sadie65 » Mon Sep 05, 2005 1:25 pm

So last night I saw Dennis...tonight I went to the Walworth County Fair in Elkhorn Wisconsin. I knew Styx would be performing there. I did not attend the perfomance, but as I walked around and enjoyed the fair I could clearly hear them, and from time to time I could see them on the stage.

They appeared to draw a large crowd along with a number of people who would stop and listen to various songs as they went through the fair. Since I wasn't inside the event I could only gauge crowd reaction by the applause. To me, it didn't sound overly enthusiastic, nor did it seem too tepid. I thought the medley was well received, along with various songs from their heyday.

I heard a range of comments from those outside the venue. Anywhere from how great the music was, to how bad Dennis' voice had gotten (several people explained that Dennis was no longer with the band), to how Dennis got screwed or how Dennis was a whiner. My overall impression of the people I saw was that they were reasonably pleased. I think Styx is truly a nostalgia act and for the folks going, it was a nice night to relive a little of their youth. Not a bad thing at all.

Having watched parts of their stage performance and listening to them perform, I know they are not a band I would enjoy seeing. I say that with no malice towards anyone here. I didn't like some of the changes to their material (just as I believe some of you don't like changes Dennis has made to the material he uses). It's just a personal preference. I am sure that Kansas (or at least I assume he will) will post a review and I'd bet he enjoyed the show. Which is great.

They are solid musicians and it was a great night to not see a show in my case, so I guess they were fair at the fair.

So, you went to the fair, and instead of paying the 7 bucks to se Styx, you went on a Carnival Ride...I am not blasting you, just validating Styx...I think they are worth 7 bucks..and I think they are worth a ride on an unsafe carnival ride....

I thought the Journey folks had it bad...oooh.

Who cares what you think of Styx?

I'm sure you'd rather to go a Dennis concert and be told to sit down because the people behind you are not enthused enough to stand up...which goes back to how much of a bore Dennis is in concert.

Too bad you are more motivated to insult Styx then to post about Dennis, in threads you and Suite start.

LOL...Sorry you are so bored with Dennis that you have to go after Styx. Obviously he's not exciting enough to inspire any conversation from you, or enthusiasm from a crowd. Obviously, YOU need Styx more then anybody else here. If it were not for Styx, you wouldn't have ANYTHING to say!

I beg your pardon. I attend the fair every year, as I live not too far from it. I am perhaps the most fair minded 'DeYoungian" on this board and have nearly always defended peoples choice to see whomever they like. Since most on this board know my preferences I was trying to be fairminded (no pun intended) and give my impression. Comparing me to people who cannot accept reality is a bit moronic in my opinion.

And for the record, for me only, I'd say I spent my money wisely.

My impression at DDY concerts is the people are enthusiastic and love the music they are hearing, but they are there to hear a great singer. Sometimes you/they just want to sit and listen to a stellar singer and musician. Standing up and hollering are not part of what they came to do.

I won't make a judgment on Current Styx since I have not seen them live. Somehow I think standing up and making a lot of noise, perhaps to drown out what one is hearing, is part of the "experience". 8)

I would have paid the $7.00 to see Styx had I been there, but I respect everyones right to spend their own money as they see fit.

As I've gotten wiser ( OK.......older ) I find it more difficult to whooop it up at any concert, this does not mean I am not enjoying / appreciating the music. I purposely bought my tickes a ways back so as not to be in the midst of those who do make more noise.

And I know artists feed off of that energy and all, but shouldnt the fact that I paid $100 or so for a pair of tickets ( and in my case drove 3 hours round trip ) be an indication that I am an enthusiast ???

Just a few random thoughts.

Ditto, classic! I tend to be a lot more reserved these days in concert settings, yet I feel like I enjoy them as much as I ever did. Besides, whooping it up seems to result in more aches and pains than it did in years past - LOL!!!! Not to mention, it's easier for me to get wild and crazy when others around me are doing the same, and in general, the audiences are all a bit more reserved at the concerts I frequent anymore!

Ditto me three! LOL! I think when one gets to a certain, uh, "age" one is more inclined to go to a concert to actually hear what is being sung and played, maybe muttering to themselves, "Yeah. THAT'S why I liked their music!"

I know many, including myself, are less inclined to see and hear the music through an alcohol (or other) fog and, therefore, getting wild and crazy are just not in the mix.

Bugsy,

I had a lifetime of "fog" in my teens and 20's...in fact, I "fogged" many excellent shows right out of my long term memory !

These days, I'm more of a fog-free guy, but I still forget more than I wish I did ! who'd we see on saturday night again ???

I thought John Waite sounded great. I do think he was better the last time that I saw him with a band. I love hearing those old Baby's songs. It would've been pretty "cool" if Ricky Phillips stopped by on the way to Wisconsin to play. 8)

It's sad, I'm just naturally foggy!! That's what happens when you have a bunch of kids, the memory goes downhill. :?

The point is that instead of posting about DENNIS in threads HE and YOU start, froy would rather bitch and complain about Styx. What I said had NOTHING to do with complaining about the type of threads you start....I am simply stating the obvious about what froy wants to post about - "Styx sucks".

I didn't make it to the show. I got free tickets to see Alice Cooper/Cheap Trick on Friday. That was the only concert I saw this weekend. Besides, the don't sell beer at the Walworth Co. Fair.

We do have tickets to see the last show of the tour in Merrilville IN.

See you there
