Steve Augeri about Styx

Postby Monker » Fri Sep 09, 2005 2:45 am

I thought this was interesting form the Augeri interview that Andrew has up....

Andrew: That's one thing – what about sharing vocals on an album – that's an entirely different situation.

Augeri: I'll tell you what started a lot of this. We had the pleasure of touring with REO and Styx a couple of years ago and we were impressed by the way entire band had shared the limelight as opposed to just having a lead singer.
Each and every band member sings and all have our different styles and I can take each and every on of these guys and tell you where their vocals qualities and strengths are.
And one thing would impress you more than the next. So we felt that way about Styx and we enjoyed that and the other guys thought that would be a good idea and why would I ever argue a good thing. It seemed to work with those guys and I think it has worked realty well on the record.

What is REALLY funny is that while Steve talks about how Styx spreads the lead vocals around, Ross Valory doesnt even know who JY was.

Read the Ross Valory interview. Andrew states that Ross's singing reminds him of James (JY) Young of Styx and Ross doesnt have a clue who JY is.

Didnt they do like 40+ shows together with Styx. Styx always appeared before Journey?? You would of thought by some twist of fate they would of bumped into one another. Or that Ross would of somehow backstage would of heard These Are The Times, or Miss America playing.

Thats no way to treat a legend!!!!!!!!

Here's part of the interview that Yogi was talking about:

Andrew:It's an interesting boogie. The first thing I thought of when I heard it was it reminded me of Styx's James Young and his lead vocals.

Ross: I'm not familiar with his style.

Andrew: His does a lead vocal or two on each Styx album.

Ross: I will apologise for not being up with their repertoire.
Even though Styx, REO and Journey are all in the same genre, when I get home I don't listen to pop music.
When I am in the car, I have 2 classic stations, a jazz station and on the AM, it's all talk. Some political, some art bell.
When I go to a record store, I'm buying the Mozart and Miles Davis that I haven't got yet. Sort of retro for me.
Getting back to what you were saying though. There is a new approach by Journey there with everyone singing something.
And isn't Deen something else?

LOL, he just zoomed past the "legend" on this one.

How the hell did he get that nickname anyway? Anybody know?

I was just about to post the Steve Augeri reference...

As for Ross and JY, did Styx play a JY song on the Main Event Tour? I don't remember anymore.

I remember him saying something about people calling the band legendary, as well as him. I'll see if I can find the interview. it was said self deprecatingly...at least I think it was.

I found one of the articles - LOL He's so full of crap, it's unbelievable reading these over again.

http://www.hpr1.com/archives/jun1704/feature.htm

"I saw an interview with Jack (Black) before he worked with us, and he said that 'Grand Illusion' was his favorite song of all time. And these people are now out there winning Academy Awards and having number one box office kind of films … it's mind blowing," Young admits. "Some young women referred to me as a legend about three years ago, and I was mildly taken aback, because in my own mind, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, the Beatles, the Stones, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddly -- these people are legendary. But we have created a body of work that has influenced peoples' lives in ways I would never have dreamed of, and part of being legendary is just surviving long enough to still be alive when people discover that, 'Hey, you've been making records for thirty years and I really like what you've done.' So, I refer to myself as the reluctant legend. Now our mission statement is to go out there and mark the planet, and remind people about who Styx was and try to rebuild ourselves and climb Mount Everest for the second time."

Here's another one - LOL

These articles are so funny as I'm reading them. He's still full of crap - LOL

http://www.jamesyoung.ws/intviews/daytonabeachnje.htm

Fellow Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw was signing one of the women's bellies, "and they said, 'JY, JY -- can you please sign our bare midriffs as well?' " Young recalls. "Then the one young woman told me that I reminded her of her father. Then she told me I was a legend.

"That legendary thing is a hard mantle to wear," Young adds wryly, with tongue firmly in cheek. "So I've begun to refer to myself as a reluctant legend."

This wouldn't be the first time Journey was inspired by a fellow band they were out on the road with.
Wasn't "Where Were You" inspired by their time spent along side AC/DC?

Thank you Monker, I'd rather be called pathetic than what you usually post about me on what you think I do.

Oh my gosh, have any of us ever stayed on the same topic with these threads? This has been going on for a few years. I recall that I have posted positive things about Dennis (and Carrot Styx) and some of "you" people go crazy and turn that into a bash fest too.

Congrats.

Congratulations to you too and I hope you have a great day!!

Good old perception. It never ceases to amaze me that so many people only see or hear what they want to.

Heck even Froy has made fun of Dennis at times.

I think Steve's comments were very nice and he seems like a good guy.

As for poking fun at Styx, past or present, seems to me I've seen you do plenty of both.

Oh and since when is JY the only member of Styx? I didn't realize JY was equal to Styx.

Lighten up.

Thanks for sharing.

Regarding the original post on this thread. Yes, Styx has multiple lead singers. They have always been that way and each singer has his own "hits" to sing.

Journey doing that doesn't make sense to me. Journey is known for Steve Perry's voice. Other members singing new songs or songs from before the band was famous isn't going over well in concert. People don't know these songs.

Journey - like Styx has become a nostalgia act. People want to hear the hits. And they want them to sound like they remember.

Incidentally, regarding Styx' setlist during the Main Event Tour; Fields of the Brave and These are the times were traded in and out of the set nightly.
