Man In The Wilderness

For those who didn't know what the song was about or would like to know :)

I really love "Man in the Wilderness", by the way :)

While many songs were slated for single release, the album cuts on The Grand Illusion were solid tracks that could have been singles themselves. One song that fits that bill is “Man In The Wilderness.” “From time to time I came to feel a certain detachment myself, noticing that even if I'd had a bad day, or a personal crisis the audience couldn't see that and frankly had their own problems they were there to forget. I wrote "Man In The Wilderness" about that. We were feeling growing pains, each in our own personal way. It was a melancholy song telling of the loss of innocence. Finding that crowds can love you and believe you when you put on a smile, never knowing or caring how you might really be feeling. I don't know what I expected from the audience, but suddenly I found myself in front of a lot of people, night after night after night and the cheers and adoration seemed endless. Not conducive to maintaining a grip on reality for the inexperienced. Of course I got over it, but in the mean time I got a wonderful song out of that moment of weakness in my life.”

Cool!

That's always been one of my favs off Grand Illusion.
“How did that sound?”

“Like Teddy Ruxbin hooked up to a car battery!”

I also read a qoute from Tommy saying that he wrote that song after opening for Kansas and he wanted to write a Kansas song for STYX.

This song started out as an early fantasy Tommy had about being the leader of Styx....

It told a story about taking a looooong drive with Dennis deeeeeeeeeep into the forest, then throwing a stick as FAR as he could so Dennis would chase it, and then quickly getting back in the car and driving off before Dennis knew what was happening......

The Lyrics were subsequently changed to the version you hear on the GI album.

Classic says:
