DENNIS DEYOUNG AND OTHER FAMOUS ACCORDION PLAYERS

There were times when the accordion was in fashion and during one of them a 7-year-old boy named Dennis DeYoung began seven years of accordion lessons. He quit music altogether at 14. But a year or two later he was walking down the streets of his Roseland neighborhood on the South Side and heard the Panozzo brothers, Chuck on guitar and John on drums, playing music with another kid on accordion.

DeYoung soon replaced the accordion player and later switched to piano, and these three teenagers formed the nucleus of what would become the band Styx. With DeYoung as leader and principal songwriter-he penned such tunes as "Babe," "Lady" and "Come Sail Away"-the band went on to sell more than 30 million records.

Not many former accordion players did as well (John Lennon did a little better), but many famous people played the accordion, including politicos Richard Nixon and H. Ross Perot; actors James Stewart, Drew Carey and Charlie Chaplin; novelists Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy; baseball pitcher John Smoltz; and Mahatma Gandhi.

Would the Panozzo's original accordion player qualify as

Styx's "Bete Best" ?????? I wonder what ever happened to him ? :wink:

Also, did the Panozzo's give him the boot, or did he quit ?

I admit to not being the sharpest spoon in the drawer, but I have to ask
what it is I am missing regarding your last post ....???????

It says in the article that the Mahatma played the accordion. Since accordion music is used quite a lot at Oktoberfest's round the world, he was cracking wise about seeing the Mahatma perform with his accordion. Made me chuckle.

You are plenty sharp Classic.
I was just visualizing this little hindu playing his accordion at these German Beerfests with all these rowdy krauts singing along to all there favorite polkas.Maybe even him having a nice stein of lager sitting next to his little sandalled feet.
I also used to work in a German restaurant way back and polka was on all day long.I eventually ended up liking polka and accordion.It is quite jolly stuff.
(and it is without disrespect to the man)

No imagine me at my computer furiously chugging coffee and red bull, trying to regain consciousness after a rough weeekend

Hasn't killed me yet......at least that I know of ! If I am dead, I can ease up on trying to meet some of these damn deadlines for work !

It might explain why the ol' blood pressure was a little high at my last Doctors visit.....

Sadly, Caffine is my drug of choice, and I seem to have built up a bit of a tolerance to it !

If they would just remodel the work day and allow a morning and and afternoon nap I could give it up !!!!
