Last year Styx cancelled some shows in Canada due to the spread or control of SARS. Since this is a Styx board, I had to get them in. I realize this may NOT be the right fourm for this but, since we all saw what happened when Katrina hit I must ask are we protecting our children and future generations???

After President Bush spoke last Thursday, ABC did a special on what EXPERTS believe probably will be the GREATEST threats on mankind. Threats that WILL happen very soon if we are not prepared for them. These were EXPERTS much like the experts that warned us about Katrina and what would happen to New Orleans. Is OUR government listening??

Experts worldwide believe the GREATEST threat out there today, that is inevidible to strike us is the H5N1 bird flu virus. It will reach America, it will mutate where it can be passed from person to person, and it will kill millions of people in a very short period of time. We (USA) are NOT even close to being prepared for it.

I have to ask is spending billions to fight a war half way across the world so that we can institute our form of government worth it?? A war that was based on weapons of mass destruction. A war that has taken us away from Afganistan and away from 9-11. We are spending billions on this war and are we safer??

Are we protecting our children at home?? The experts are warning that a bird flu pandemic is just around the corner if we dont prepare now.

I want my kids to be able to argue about who is the greatest rock band out there. I want them to debate Gowan vs DDY. I just hope my generation affords them the chance to do this.

I'm in no way against anyone procreating ( I need lots of little future taxpayers to fund my future social security payments, y'know.....)

But one of the reasons chose not to bring any little ones into the world is my fear of what kind of life they might have once they got here.....the asian bird flu is but the tip of the iceburg, I fear.

I think the global economy will bring about a turn for the worse for the America lived in by your descendants, and they will have to get by with much less then you and I....and will have hardships that will be unimaginable to you and me.

I sure hope I am wrong, but I don't like what I forsee for the future.

What scares the crap out of me is the cowboy mentality so many of our leaders have. I am NOT talking about Republican vs Democrat, I am talking about leaders on both sides.

It is real tangible to kill another person for a 'cause'. To say we eliminated a virus just doesnt have the right amount of teeth for most of us. So we go after the tangible proof, when the real threat is the one still lurking.

The future must have looked grim for generations.Plagues,pests endless stream of wars ,nuclear power,sickness and deceases,pollution and lack of water and the list goes on and on.
I am glad to be alive and sure am glad that I have a 6 year old son to be part of me and my commonlaw partner(ehh wife,but not).
Well,though the future looks grim it has done so for centuries.
Best make the most of it while we can,and hope for the best.

The chemotherapy I had some years back made brought finality to our decision. I wouldnt totally rule out adoption of a child though ( wouldn't be an infant ) but Its not near the top of the to-do list just yet.

I love that song.

A quick story, the general manager of the TV station where I work went home not feeling well on a Friday a few weeks ago. We learned Monday Morning that he was dead. He was in good health but a Blood clot in his leg traveled to his lung and he was dead. He was 53.
I'm not worried about bird flu, terrorist attacks, earthquakes or anyother thing that can sneak up an kill me. I'm worried that I'm not being a good enough father to my kids, I worry that I am not true enough to my faith, I worry that I don't do enough to help the needy but I will not cower from the unseen, when it's my time I will go and hopefully end up in a better place.
I'm not saying that we as individuals should not take percautions to protect ourselves and our families. But to dwell on the horrible maybes only serves to take us away from the things that really matter.

Mr V, I like your life philosophy, your priorities are right where they should be !

While I may have a somewhat pessimistic outlook for the future in general, I'm not cowering in my basement ( OK, I AM in the basement, but only because that's where we set up the computer !! ) and I try to live by those same values.
