Styx bio.

Postby gr8dane » Sun Oct 02, 2005 2:31 am

Maybe we are getting closer to that Styx biography.
Read a British mag 'Rock collector' or something and you could win a print of the cover from Brave new world. The guy(Ioannis) who did that along with Return to paradise is involved with the bio.I assume he will design the bookcover
Any of you guys heard anything???

I really wonder if anyone could write a "fair" biography of the band Styx. It would have to take someone who is NOT a fan, I would think, but a disinterested third party who could look at everything objectively. This person would have to have access to all members and former managers, etc. to be able to write a very unbiased telling of the Styx story. Sadly, former members have passed away and their input would have been vital, I believe, to a complete biography.

I just do not think a comprehensive, fair, telling of the story is possible, so, if we get any sort of biography, it will come with a built-in agenda, in my estimation, and tell only part of the history.

Certainly there is (was?) interest in the Styx story, judging from the response to the VH1 showing of Behind the Music. This was the second most-watched Behind the Music ever shown on that channel. SOMEone was curious.

Ah yes, but let's remember that the BTM was hyped with a lot of melodrama ahead of time. Made for great tv. As for whether or not anyone is interested in a Styx bio... I have the feeling not enough are. The writer of the purported bio has said it will be a self published book. He sad he had shopped it around...but felt he knew how to market it better. Perhaps, but I think that unless he has one heck of a budget, he will have a hard time getting it known...other than to die hard fans.

While there is a part of me interested in their story, another part says that without the scenario Bugsy described, it will only serve to drive a further wedge with the fans, and cause the men in the band, past and present more frustration and potentially pain. I'd rather leave them to their privacy. Just my .02

After the "Behind the Music" debacle, how many members, past or present are really going to cooperate with someone writing an unauthorized bio of the band ????

I truly cant imagine DDY giving them the time of day, at least without having control over the final product....

A ( only slightly ) more likely project would be if the writing bug hit one of them, and they wanted to write an auto-biography. This certainly would not be a money making venture, hence the improbability factor is also very high.

Might be a fun "movie of the week" story ! I hear someone is doing one on the Who, and Roger Daltrey is one of the executive producers.

True, but this was done for ALL the BTM's. It was just that more people were interested to see the one on Styx. I believe the one about Journey rated pretty high as well.

Anyone know the No. 1 watched BTM of all time?

Interesting, Classic. Lot of drama with THAT group. They did this before with an original movie about Def Leppard and it was not bad, all-in-all.

it depends on the settlement.

Herbie Herbert said that Steve Perry demanded as part of his agreement with Journey that no member of Journey could write an autobiography.

Having read a fair bit of rock bios,I have only once had a bit of a biased
setting.Michael Bruce from the original Alice Cooper. But that's another story.95% were written by non-members,but journalists or someone from the band organisation.I think whoever writes these bios,do not want to come across one sided but be fair to the reader. That is my general experience.
I see tons of bios about some strange or totally unknown (to me anyways) out there. They may only have one printrun, but they get out.
Styx ,has been around for a long time and it is just a matter of time for one.
So what I am saying is ,it won't be totally impossible to see a Styx bio.
I could have sworn ,that about 15 or so pages ago on this Styx board there was talk about some bio in the brewing stages.
Again, the mag I read said something was in process,so lets see.

Just one more comment here. Self publishing something isn't exactly anything to brag about. To say he knows how to market it better is really beyond reality. If a publisher buys a novel they are basicaly saying they believe that it will sell and have paid the author for the rights to it. They are not going to skimp on the marketing - they OWN it. If the author is willing to appear publicly, that is more incentive for the publisher to buy it...However, that does NOT replace the backing of a publisher.

Quite honestly, anybody can self publish anything in todays internet world. But, doing so means that you are either already a big name author who can sell by name only (like Stephen King has attempted) and don't need to sell your rights to your work. Or, it means publishers won't touch your work for whatever reason.

IMO, this really detracts from the credibility of this biography. In a way, I really hope it doesn't happen.
