OK Yogs, I'm jumpin on the 'Strohs bandwagon ( the team, not the beer...Yuck ! ) for the duration of the series, for 2 reasons......

#1 Your manager spent many an agonizing year managing the AAA Brewers through 162 game schedules agianst a league full of superior talent, and NEVER bailed on them. I respect the hell out of that !

#2 As a Cubs fan, I just cant handle the idea of both the Red Sox AND the White Sox winning a World Series before the Cubbies do !

Go Astros !!!!

Sigh. I like the Cubbies too. Grew up in a divided house. Mom was a Cubs fan, dad for the White Sox....but Classic....say it ain't so! :(

Sorry Sadie, If the Cubs are to remain Lovable Losers, they just cant be the only team with a long lapse between Series wins.....unfortunately, their peers are dropping like flies !

Hey I'm a hometown girl...with teams that have a tremendously lonnngggggggggg record of dry spells (putting it mildly). When one of them does good...I am gonna cheer long and loud.

Can I help it if you feel a need to be a masochist. Cheering for the Sox...and Cubbies...you can be Bi-Soxual

Classic,

Phil Garner is one CLASS guy.

Two Aprils ago before he got the Astros job he was an unemployed ex player/minor league manager that kind of had been blackballed out of MLB. His son lives in La Pryor Texas which is about 10 miles from where I live. My wife and Phils sons wife ( Phils daughter in law) are very good friends.

Anyway, my wife was in charge of an Easter Egg hunt for our Junior Service League. My 85 year old Dad was down from Minnesota and who shows up pushing a stroller with his new grand daughter in it ?? Phil Garner.

After the Easter egg hunt was over, Phil spent over an hour talking to my dad about baseball in the old days. They talked about the old St. Paul Saints/ Minneapolis Millers, Ted Williams, Harmon Killebrew, Bob Gibson, Willie Mays, etc.. I know Phil was probably bored to death by some of the conversation. But finally we got my dad to leave so poor Phil could go spend time with his family. I swear Phil would of stayed and talked forever, just to be nice to an older person.

My father who only rooted for the Twins is now a huge Astro fan because of this. Game 5 crushed him, because he felt so bad for Phil, and he thought they were now going to lose.

Also, three days after Houston lost game seven last year to St. Louis, Phil shows up at the Knippa Harvest festival. His other granddaughter and my daughter are in the same class. I got to talk to him again for about 10 minutes. He asked me all about my dad, and what a great time he had talking to him.

GREAT guy!!!! 100% class!!!!!!!

What a great story, Yogi!!!

I copied and sent it to my sister who is a huge Astros fan. Hope you don't mind. :)

I have spent the morning trying to score a copy of yesterday's Houston Chronicle (Headline: Houston, We Have a Pennant!) for my sister. OY!

I found one at the veterinary clinic of all places! All the Chronicles were sold out yesterday everywhere.

Yogi,

While my team may oppose yours, that was a wonderful experience you had. How absolutely terrific of Mr. Garner. I'm sure it made your dad's day.

Thanks very much. It is not often people surprise us as being more than we expect.

Phil had a couple of trying years managing the Tigers too as I now recall....he also as a player was a guy who ( to borrow an over used cliche, but one that truly fits here...) gave everything he could to his team....when your teammates give you the nickname "Scrap Iron"" you must be dioing everything possible with you god-given talent !

Go Phil, and ( with apologies to you windy city fans ) Go Strohs !!!!!

Hey ...... I guess you could say that, for once, I'm even rooting against Dennis ! Does this mean my membership in the DeYoungian society will be revoked ?????

"Garner" does sound a little like "Gowan"...........geez, I think I even caught myself humming "A Salty Dog" earlier today too !!!!! ( or was that just a coughing fit ? I do have a cold........   )

Playing baseball in the snow. There is just something wrong about that.

Well, it is beautiful in Texas. Should be lovely weather for games 3 & 4, when the Astros wrap up this thing.

In a related story. Some woman on the news just paid $6000 for, I think it was ONE ticket. Not even a great seat either. Sheesh! Two words Tele Vision.

Staring out my window (sadly I am working)...it's a light rain and mid fifties. Nice and brisk! Oh and I'll bet they are still recovering from the cold here. No way they wrap this up that fast

They were doing the same thing here. Highest I've heard here is $1800. Guess we just don't have the same level of fandom. Nah...we're just more economical!

What a crappy day outside here too. I hope the ballplayers dress warm for the game - LOL Maybe they'll have the heaters going just like for the babies (grown men) at the footballs games. They can't handle the weather. I'm sure they'll be whining on tv, blah blah blah blah - LOL Every time a football team comes up to Green Bay in December, they're always crying and whining about how cold it is and the snow. Every game!! Bunch of crybabies - LOL I love watching the games played in the elements, not on some crappy astroturf, what a joke. They can't play on real grass like baseball and football should be played?

Hey on that happy sports note, I hope everyone has a GREAT weekend

You can run, but you can't hide. I know where you live!! If some Sunday morning you open your front door and see your house decorated in Green and Gold and little Cheeseheads hanging from your trees, consider that a warning - LOL
