LOL

In that time period, which you Twiggies hold onto so dearly, Journey sold 20 million records. Styx sold 5 mill. Do the math.

Wrong. If you do the math NOW the numbers may be kind of correct. But not at that time.

When Journey released their Greatest Hits CD that is when their back catalog EXPLODED. They sold millions of CD's after the release of their greatest hits.

Styx's back catalog really didnt take off until after the Roboto commercial. Styx sold at the time they were hot, but not much after. Journey sold GREAT at the time, but not as well as Styx did.

For the love of all that's holy...sheesh.

They are classic rock bands. One outsold the other. At times each was more popular than the other.

Journey is fairing better now than Styx. As much as I love Classic Styx and always will, Journey continues to do better than Styx right now. Perhaps it's over saturation, perhaps it's the stigma that for some reason it wasn't supposed to be cool to like Styx. Dunno. Don't care.

Can we close this pissing match now? It's long since stopped being funny.

Again, you must go to the school of George W Bush mathmatics. How can Styx sell so great "at the time" when not ONE of their cd's has sold 4 million? Escape was 6 million the first year. frontiers 4 million. Yes, Infinity, Evolution and Departure were all 2 Mill albums, and gained another mill after GH. And all of those have sold as well as the BEST styx albums. Yogi, it just doesn't add up.

Rock'ndeano,

If the numbers you quoted AT THAT TIME are correct you WIN!!!!.

Again, Styx's popularity slipped in between Paradise Theatre & Kilroy. That is the time frame when Journey really took off. That was the beginning of 1982.

I bought two Styx scrapebooks off of E-bay some time ago( paid big bucks for them). Alot of the at time sales, and articles about concerts/ attendance, and all sorts of other REALLY cool stuff are in these scrapebooks. I cant put my hands on some of these articles right now ( I have not a clue where they are). Some of the articles come directly from Styx's publicity people so they may be skewed. Here are some facts I think I remember:

I am almost positive Paradise Theatre was the #2 album of 1981 behind REO's Hi Infidelty. I think Escape didnt count until 1982?? Departure & Cornerstone were both in the Top 100 for 1981.

I also know The Paradise Theatre Concerts were the highest grossing shows for 1980 - 1981. They also did GREAT (attendance records at that time) in Europe.

Finally, when Kilroy came out it was charting higher than Frontiers for 3 -5 month

Maybe Andrew can step in here and help.

Since it's all about sales numbers to Deano, I wonder how he fits listening to his Journey CD's in at all, what with listening to some of the geniuses who have sold more than SP Manilow and the boys......

Heck, he must be wearing out his 4th copy of Thriller by now !

Sorry Deano, but Styx is still the BETTER band, and nothing you can say or do will change that....

oh, and by the way, thanks for doing your part in keeping the Styx board
THOUSANDS of posts ahead of that other board  Even though the content of your posts is total crap, at least something good is voming from them ! :D

I almost forgot I remember reading by the time Cornerstone came out Babe was on it's way to #1. The Grand Illusion and Pieces Of Eight had both sold well over 2 million copies, and were on their way to triple platinium.

Anyway, Cornerstone shipped platinium, as did Paradise Theatre a year plus later. These were the first two albums by a rock and roll group to ever do this.

You know jackass, I walk away after pounding you, yet you keep asking me back after the dust settled.

You really are too funny. I don't understand you. You are defending a 5 yr period in a 25 yr history? What the fuck is that? Do you go to Styx shows now? Are you proud to say you are a Styx fan now? lol

Dude, Journey has done it far better for far longer, and STILL do it better NOW too. No matter what you throw at me, it's all emotion, and no data. Yogi has presented the argument in a way in which I would like, but you are very different. You need an ass kicking. I have disproved every shit argument you have made. keep googling, but you aren't going to find any magic numbers.

"Better Band." That really gets me. How you want to do this? Wanna break it down to individual mambers? Lets...

Guitarist- Is there ANY doubt?
Keyboards-see above
Drums. Deen not only drums better, but sings better than Styx
Bass-even
Singer- Hard to say. due to different setups between the bands.

Also, lets talk about Perry Manilow shall we? You make it sound like Journey was all fluff. I thought Styx sang some real goodies too. Babe? Come Sail Away? You tell me those songs stand the test of time better than Faithfully? You are high.

Let's talk rock. What is Syx's hardest edged tune? I bet it isn't as hard as Edge of the Blade? or Perhaps Line of Fire?

Your turn.

Remember, I was gone, but don't think I will let you type bogus shit and NOT respond.

Deano,

I have to agree with you about guitarists. But I'd put Tommy up against Neal combining Guitar playing, Singing AND songwriting. Still close, but it would be an interesting battle.

Drums-Deen is awesome, but Todd might be even better. When you add the singing component into it, the gap narrows.

Keyboards-I would take a Dennis/Larry combo over a Gregg/Jon combo anyday. Jon is a very capable songwriter and a solid keyboardist, but not a virtuoso. Larry and Dennis are superior musicians and Dennis is without question the best vocalist of the four. Only Jon can give Dennis a run as a songwriter.

Bass-who knows? I'd probably give it to Ross since he's been there the longest.

Vocals-Another tough one. Perry and Dennis are premier. Augeri and Shaw just barely behind. But past that, I'd take Glen/Larry/JY over Kevin/Jon/Gregg.

But this is of course strictly my opinion and I actually like all of them.

Scott,

It was tough to do a head to head because of the make up of the bands.

I didnt include Dennis on Keys...but Jon Cain versus Larry? Not close

Drums, both are awesome, and if I didnt use Dennis singing on keys, I wont use Deen singing on drums..

Bass..who cares

Guitars...Come on Scotty. Are you drinking? Neal is possibly the best guitarist in the world. And writing? Neal has had a hand in the 40 or so hits they have.

Again, you and Yogi, I have no problem with..This is good natured.

PS- Dennis/Larry and JY over Kevin/Cain/Rolie? Kevin was never in the band.

Yeah, I know they are about to release something so they are going to change their set. But up til this point there was NO new music from REO.

Journey has been working hard on the tour trail for the past 8 years. They toured well in 2001 with Arrival. The following year they played fairs, casinos, small markets. Following that the packaged again for major markets...and then the secondary market again. Journey have played their fair share of rodeos, fairs and casinos. But every year they have increased their audience. Like you guys have pointed out, Styx is probably suffering from touring TOO Much. REO tours a lot, and with Styx a lot so maybe that is hurting them some...and they also have not had ANY new material.

What other bands do you feel fit this category?

Night Ranger? They tour constantly and have not had a recent release.

I honestly can't think of any other bands that are doing what these guys are doing.

Fit *how*? What genre are you talking about? Are you talking classic rock/80's bands or classic rock bands past their prime on a comback trail or what?

Serious tourers in the last ten years:

Aerosmith

Bruce Springsteen(with and without E Street)

AC/DC(not continuous, but usually in support of a new album)

Bon Jovi

ZZ Top

Rolling Stones

U2

Pat Benatar

Foreigner(promise of a new album that never materialized)

Oh, Def Leppard and Cheap Trick too.

Deano,

Do you own Styx's Equinox?? Best album EVER in my book. You want hard edged? Listen to Midnight Ride, Born For Adventure, and Suite Madame Blue back to back to back!!

Side Two of Pieces of Eight is also damn damn good & hard rocking. Glen Burtnik adds a real hard edge with World Tonight, Edge Of The Century, & Love is The Ritual off of Styx's Edge Of The Century CD. Finally, Kiss Your Ass Goodbye, followed by These Are The Times both ROCK, did I mention One With Everything, Shooze, Miss America, Half Penny/Two Penny, Borrowed Time etc......???

As for Journey, Infinity is by far my favorite album of theirs. Truly awesome!!!!! Escape #2 , Evolution #3, Frontiers#4. All masterpieces!!!

Back to there heydays. Did Journey win any major awards back then. They didnt have near as many as now. In 1979 Styx was voted the most popular band in America in a gallop poll. They also won a peoples choice award for Babe.

As for drummers???? I have seen Deen twice and Todd 8-10 times. In my book Todd Sucherman is the best drummer in America. This is coming from a non musician!!!!

Finally, I am defending a 4 year period, and a 4 year period ONLY because at that VERY time, and that VERY time ONLY Styx was #1 in America. Journey has FAR FAR surpassed them in popularity I know that. The Main Event tour proved that. Their overall album sales prove that over and over again. But still for one short 15 minutes in the life of the band Styx could say they were the MOST popular band in America. Can Journey EVER make that claim???

Yes, Journey was voted Americas most popular group in 1982 AND 1983.

Yep! I saw them a summer ago (not this past summer,) and I believe that is the best they have sounded in a long, long time! My friends who are casual fans AT BEST, kept commenting about how great the concert was. I even saw them singing to a few of the songs (some of the songs I honestly didn't think they knew....) it was wonderful!
