Current Line-Up Styx Cancelled show

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Sat Nov 05, 2005 10:27 am

Just in case for those who were planning to go, the Current Line-Up of Styx had to cancel their show at the Ritz Theatre in Elizabeth NJ, for Friday, November 11th.

I "guess" the show has been cancelled and so far hasn't been rescheduled. Once again, they are touring too much and too often. Promoters promoting these Styx shows are losing money, it's a fact. If you belong to Pollstar, it's not that hard to figure out how many tickets sold at concerts, how much money is coming in and the expenses being paid. Once again, promoters are losing money.

Nope, it's not 1981, you are right!!! They totally burned themselves out!!

Of course if Dennis was in the band they would probably do 50 dates a year, give or take, at least it would be more special when they came back around. Right now they play the same set list over and over. I know they add a song here or there and I know that with different venues there's time constraints or whatever. I've seen them and I've seen the set lists.

They need to take a break for a year, and recharge. Do some solo stuff, then come back. Last two cds have been good. Last show was ok. Seen them at least once a year, but last time lacking something (not DDY, before someone chimes in), something new.-ERIC

I think they more than proved their point that they could tour without Dennis. That being said, I do believe it's time for them to come in off the road for a while. They are losing their audience more and more. And I really don't want to see that happen for them.

They're pretty much coming off the road in two weeks after they record the Soundstage show. They'll be back in February, but I bet we'll see them do some of the holiday shows.

Don't think whether Dennis was with them or not whether they would sell many more tix, but they probaably would do 30 - 50 dates a year.

The state of the industry would require them to tour if they wanted any real income. And the fact that they are now signed with Universal wouldn't have happened if they hadn't toured as much as they have.

NH, I think you have made a good point here.

I will say, though, that ol' "arc of our career" JY talked about may be drooping just a bit -- for now at least.

Maybe a rest and a new CD will infuse new life into this band and they can take that bus out of the storage barn and get 'er rolling again.

The first one is definitely a deal breaker (sorry Mr. President aka Scott)

The second...might be the more "popular" choice.

Don't kid yourself... they'd sell a good deal more tickets with Dennis and play better venues in some markets.

I don't think I am kidding myself.

No doubt they may sell a few mor tickets, but not a lot more to make them playing 10,000 seat venues.

And if they were together you would never get the Symphonic shows.

Not to mention when Dennis came to New England, he played to about 700 at one show and the other show HE cancelled.

The 12 year hiatus of the Classic lineup did more damage to the longstanding popularity of the band than any othe factor.

LOL, I was asked very kindly not call them Carrot Styx. It's very, very, very hard for me not to post it, but I'm trying.

IMO, they need to tour to make income, these last 2 albums/cds didn't do squat. I don't know about the contract they signed with Universal, but if this next album/cd tanks like the ones before, I think they'll be let go.

Storage barn, that's funny!! Actually they have 2 tour buses. I was in one of them, I thought it would be different, but I keep forgetting, they're grown men - LOL It ain't no party bus!!!

From what I "heard", and please correct me if I'm wrong or if anyone actually knows the facts, is that JY is the one that called Soundstage and asked them if they could be guests. "Usually" it's the other way around, you're invited to appear on the show.

I totally disagree. I listened to the whole Georgia Symphonic concert when STYX played back in 1996 or 97 or whenever, it was pretty darn good. They would do it again if Dennis was back in and it would be so awesome, especially with the extra guitar. BUT please don't ever, ever play "Miss America" with a symphony, what the hell were they thinking, just terrible!!

Not that I recall. One of our group(whom JY loves ;)) who was backstage with us was asking JY about playing a song and mentioned Soundstage and he just shook his head and said, "We're not doing Soundstage" and then we were pushed out! lol! I"m hoping that status will change!

You could email or call A&E and request Journey for "Live By Request".

I called and talked to someone last year for Dennis. But it wouldn't work with either Dennis or current line-up of Styx. I'm sure you all could figure out why -

With Journey, it would still work. Does Steve A. know the whole or most of the Journey music catalog pretty good?

There has been an email campaign by the fans. But I have not heard of the responses.

Yes, Steve knows the catalog.

Why would it work for Journey? I think it would be a bit more odd for Journey since Augeri wasn't the singer for any of the old classic songs. For Styx, at least Tommy and JY were there and were the voices for many of those classic songs.

And no venues in other markets like Europe and Japan.

I agree tho its time for a 12 - 18 month break...... Tommy can do a Damn Yankee tour, Ricky could do session work, Todd drum clinics, JY a solo album and Larry a tour with an orchestra playing the music of Styx

Then they could regroup, do the new CD and tour on the back of that.

Kinda funny, Todd has played on 2 other albums while a member of STYX. Not just played, but been a major force on them. Todd would do more than just session work.

I would also add that not just STYX, but many groups that are on their own never ending tour feel that if they take an extended stay from the touring circuit, they may not be able to return in a meaningful way.

Here's hoping that Night Ranger can finish their album quickly and SHAW BLADES can do a quick club circuit tour to promote their album before the late February dates return.

I ask this not with malice, but as a genuine question. How meaningful is it to the band to continue to tour when the audience is diminishing? Certainly there are other bands out there who have stayed on the tour circuit perhaps too long. In the case of Styx, they've succeeded, I would imagine, in their desire to show that they can go forward without Dennis. Having done that for the last 6.5 years, certainly they must be aware that the crowds are dwindling. Wouldn't it be better in their case, to take the time away...and buld a desire again to have their material heard again. By overstaying their welcome, so to speak, I think they jeopardize their ability to come back in a meaningful way.

I do believe that is the dilemma for them right now. They may feel they could not come back from a layoff if they took it. And they are still getting a paycheck to show up and play right now. So what do they do?

Sounds like they are staying on the road. Every time we think they are parking the bus, they just refuel and go to another place to play.

is there a "confirmed" Shaw/Blades Tour in the works? The first CD was OK, but this is where I realized that I was not a huge fan Tommy's "high" voice. And isn't the new Shaw/Blades CD a "covers" CD? How many times is Tommy going to do that. But I WOULD like to see them tour.

As others have mentioned, A Shaw/Blades, Damn Yankess, Styx, Night Ranger tour would be really cool. Sadly, I purposely put NR as the headliner over Styx. I think they would now be the bigger draw...
