WHY is Jesse Jackson sticking his nose in sports?!

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson called the Philadelphia Eagles' punishment of Terrell Owens "much too severe."

Jackson said in a statement released Friday that Owens could have been more professional when he publicly complained about his contract, his team and the Eagles' organization.

But Jackson said Owens' suspension without pay for four games and deactivation for the rest of the season is "much too severe for the charge" and hurts the athlete's NFL career at its height.

The civil rights activist said the level of punishment could have been warranted if Owens had been caught shaving points, selling drugs, carrying a gun or fighting fans without sufficient restraint.

"This does not warrant a one-year ban from the game," Jackson said, adding that the Eagles should release Owens to the open market or free agency if they no longer want to associate with him.

Ralph Nader, a consumer activist and former presidential candidate, has already called for the suspension to be rescinded.

Owens was suspended last week after he said in an interview that the Eagles showed "a lack of class" for not publicly recognizing his 100th career touchdown catch, and that the team would be better off with Green Bay's Brett Favre as quarterback. He has since apologized.

Jesse Jackson is bored with his life and he hasn't been in public lately. Poor guy - LOL

Hey Owens, you want some cheese with that whine??? You dummy, football is a team sport. What an idiot. It's always "ME! ME! ME!!" with men, "Oh look at me, see what I can do" MEN!!! - UGH (LOL)

and that the team would be better off with Green Bay's Brett Favre as quarterback. He has since apologized.

Ya think? Of course he wants Favre as a quarterback!!

You have to remember Angie, The Eagle ownership is white....and Terrell is black. If you cannot see the unfair practice going on here, then you must be blind. Wake up, racism is alive in the NFL!

Ok, I was being 3,000% sarcastic. JJ is a scumbag. He doesn't have a job, never did. he makes his living extracting money from black families and protesting any and everything.

I think that Jesse Jackson and Ralph Nader should keep out of this situation...There might be other factors leading up to his deactivation, such as player performance....

I totally agree with you!! There's no reason for these to jump in to this situation. I bet they don't even follow football - LOL

I was wondering if he really had a job. Sheesh, like I said, I think he's just bored and hasn't been on tv lately, what a doofus.

Yes and yes. I'm sure there's a nice large list to add too that the public doesn't even know about.

When I was at the White House, I can tell you, jesse was the biggest pain in the ass. Once, we made him sit in the lobby an extra hour just to be dicks, and because we would hide around the corner and watch him talk everyone blue in the face..He wouldn't ever shut his trap.

Clinton couldn't stand him...

I'm sorry...I usually stay out of political discussions (especially on rock music forums-LOL) however, I've had my fill of the reverend.

Political posturing simply to keep your face in the public eye is beyond pathetic. The man does more harm than good, and quite often appears to make himself and whatever "cause" he is pushing look like the worst ideas.

This would be no exception.

When in the world does taking responsibility for ones own actions finally return? Someone please get the hook for this guy...please.

Jesse Jackson:

"Wherever there is a wrong, I will try to right it " > (thought balloon) "Only if there is publicity involved."

The most dangerous place to be? Between Jesse Jackson and a TV camera.

Exactly, to use his terms "Lack Of Class.." He was a headache to the organization prior to this incident...Plus the organization might want to trade him to get somebody else rather than just releasing him...

Funny funny Darren comment at the MN/GB game at the dome last month. Just as the game was to start, Darren was on the big screen with a message: "Minnesota Vikings fans, for 8 years I have been the enemy, but now I have seen the light and come over from the dark side"

WHAHAHAHA! That was funny!

Deltha O'Neal has 6, for the Cincinnati Bengals. Cato June (Indy), Darren Sharper (Min) and Ty Law (NY Jets) each have 5. In addition, June and Sharper have taken two to the house!!!!!

EK,

Ding Ding Ding. We have a winner. Brett Favre leads in passes intercepted not interceptions. Ek read the question by the letter.

Another sports related question:

In 1961 Roger Maris led the league in Homeruns, who got hit in the head with the most balls?

Answer: Jim Nabors

I don't use the word "hate" around my house. I guess I shouldn't use it here either, okay, I can't stand the Bears. Better? ACK on the BEARS! And I can't stand one of my neighbors and I can't stand Don Majkowski.

3 things that I really can't stand and I really get fired up about: The crappy Bears, one of my neighbors and Don Majkowski.

I love everybody and everything else and everything is totally peachy!! :)

Did you hear the last debacle Jesse was involved with. Immediately after criticising the federal government for racism, and delibertly trying to keep minorities out of New Orleans following Katrina, Jesse brought 200 "New Orleaneans" back to the city to get jobs and housing. Of course there was no housing for them, and oh yes out of the 200, 15 were actually from the city. Yes JJ did it again, he brought in people from Chicago, St Louis, and Memphis, basically proving once again what a hypocrit he is. Disillusioned about the chain of events, all 200 left town shortly after. Thanks for the help Jesse. And Terell Owens....the fact that he wants to renegotiate a contract one year into says it all. It time the NFL sends a clear message to theses millionare ego maniacs and cuts them lose, for all of their talent, they are just not worth it. Eagle fans deserve better.

Speaking of football, how about Da Boys picking up the win on MNF???? My man Roy Williams taking it to the house! After being the whipping boys for the Eagles the past few years, it was nice to sweep them this year. Hate to see McNabb go down, though. He seems to be a classy guy, from what I can tell.

hey ek, I thought about you when I heard that...I went to bed before the end, so I missed the climactic ending.

what the heck was McNabb thinking with that throw ? shoulda thrown it away and let his defense win the game for him. not that you mind or anything.

Truthfully, I was surprised the Eagles elected to throw after running it down the Cowboys' throat most of the evening. Even Roy Williams said he was shocked that he threw it. Methinks McNabb never saw him, and that he was expecting a different pattern than what he got from his receiver. But as you pointed out, I really don't mind . . . :D

By the way, picked up Sam Gado for my fantasy football team this week. All my other backs are injured! Go Pack! Run the ball!

Gado is the "anti T.O." what a breath of fresh air ! I hope he has a great career in the NFL, no matter how short or long it is.

An athlete with humility......praised his o-line and gave them most of the credit for his success, seemed concerned about his fumbles, comes in early so he can learn the offense better, etc........and I loved how he hands the ball to the ref after scoring....How cool is that ?

He has a promising career teaching athletes how to behave after his playing days are over.
