........................................................
I'm afraid that's it.. Styx hasn't had an official single since 1991; everything from this point on was issued as promo only; and as of 2004( the year this book was printed), there were no additional albums that cracked the hot 100. This may have changed with "Big Bang Theory", but I don't know for sure.
........I should also add that the book is called "The Great Rock Discography", by Martin C. Strong; it's really a great read- featuring a listing of all the singles from many U.K. and U.S. rock groups.

I was shocked to see that Why Me charted at 26. I don't think I've ever heard that on the radio. I've heard many of the other songs that charted lower. Funny how some songs have more staying power, I guess. High Time and Music Time both charted while Haven't We Been Here Before failed to? Groan!! :)

Ek, this is true about "Why Me"; just think, the second single could have been "First Time".. :P Although, I bet it would have scored higher than 26.

I have a hard time believing that "Haven't We Been Here Before" failed to hit the charts at all. I'm thinking that maybe the single was issued, but withdrawn for some reason, or maybe it was an error in the book. It just makes no sense that "High Time" was able to nearly make the top 40, but "HWBHB" missed the hot 100?

Dennis wanted "First Time" released SO bad!! He said recently that he knew if it was released it would've made the top 5 or top 3 during that time. I'm sure it would've too, just my opinion.

I love that song!!!!

Thanks Black Wall for posting the information, I enjoy reading it :)

You should be sorry!! It's a GREAT song, I LOVE it!! The next Dennis concert I'm going to sit next to you and we can sing it together when he plays it!!

See, this song brings back a lot of memories for me. Ah, only to be young again!!

Just for you Bugsy!!

The lights are low
And we're alone
The fire's glow
It keeps us warm
As I reach out and touch your face

The moon lights up our first embrace
But please don't hesitate
Hold my hand, don't be afraid
Of the feelings in your heart
Just close your eyes, no one will mind
If we're to fall in love this first time

Don't be afraid of love
Don't be afraid of love
Don't be afraid of love

It's the first time
The first time for love
There could be so many worlds and mountains
We could climb
Together, the two of us tonight

The two of us, we're quite a pair
These lonely nights we both can share
So don't be shy, 'cause it's okay
I understand feeling that way
Hold my hand, don't be afraid
Of the feelings in your heart
Close your eyes, no one will mind
If we're to fall in love this first time

It's the first time
The first time for love
There could be so many worlds and mountains
We could climb
Together, the two of us tonight

I don't know, especially with this song!! Wouldn't it be cool if it was redone and re-released and it charted????

I'd make sure to send you, Bugsy and Classic a copy!! This song is great, especially if the mood is just right

For some reason I thought "Renegade" charted higher. I remember hearing it a lot on the radio back in the day. But then again, STYX was played a lot up here in the Midwest. Oh, I love "Sing For the Day" too!!

Suite, it is surprising that "Crystal Ball" failed to chart, but it was the third release from the album, and the first single wasn't really a big success, so I bet there wasn't a whole lot of promotion.

As for "Renegade", it seems that a lot of people are under the impression that it was a little bit bigger of a hit. Don't get me wrong, #16 is not bad at all, especially for a rock song, but I've come across a few reviews where "Renegade" is listed as a top 10 hit. I guess it just goes to show that Styx wasn't quite as commercial, or radio friendly as some of the bands they are always compared to(Foreigner, for one).

Back in 1979 I would bet First Time would of reached #1. It is a VERY GOOD ballad.

To this day I cant figure out how Tommy could bitch about First Time when he had done Never Say Never, Lights, and Boat On the River. None of those are 'Rockers'. The only 'real' rock song Tommy had on Cornerstone was Love In The Midnight.

With Cornerstone Styx went for a pop sound. They got it and did a GREAT GREAT job with it. How could they complain with Dennis wanting to release First Time????????

Rock songs on Cornerstone

Eddie
Borrowed Time
Love In The Midnight

Pop Songs

Why Me
Never Say Never
Lights

Ballads

Babe
First Time

Folk Songs

Boat On The River

All In ALL I Liked the mix. VERY VERY radio friendly at the time.

Yogi, I agree with you about Cornerstone. Though I am not a fan of "The First Time", the album is a great mix with some terrific songs on it.

I think "Borrowed Time" is one of their best ever. Ditto "Lights." Both songs reflected an interesting push/pull with the two songwriters and both songs benefitted from the input of both TS and DDY.

Back in 1979 I would bet First Time would of reached #1. It is a VERY GOOD ballad.

Dennis totally agrees with this and was probably right.

Thumbs up to your review, Mr. Yogi!

I agree Dennis agrees with this. As for it going to number one...even back then....well.....probably a very good thing we will never know.

Yogi, I also agree with your perspective on Tommy, but I really don't think that "First Time" needed to be released. I just don't think it is one of Dennis' better songs, and I think one power ballad per album was enough. "Babe" was one thing, when I first discovered it, I will admit that I liked it, but I've heard it too many times, and also, realizing that it wasn't really a "goodbye" song, but a song about being on the road, kind of took something away for me. I guess my point is, I don't really see anything wrong with the way Dennis wanted to mix things up, but they needed to have a balance, and I think both songs as singles would have been too much for one album. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, I know there a few people that really like "First Time", and I'm willing to admit that it probably would have been a smash, but.. I'm glad that some other songs were tried out, it's just too bad that "Lights" wasn't one of them.

If I were calling the shots at A&M back then, I'd release the singles in this order.

#1 -- Borrowed Time (Edited w/o "Yes, No" parts) / "Love In The Midnight" B-Side.

#2 -- First Time / Boat On The River

#3 -- Lights / Eddie

That's it. I wouldn't have released "Babe" as a single for I believe (1) "First Time" is the better song, (2) it's not Styx's forte as a rock-band to just ladle on the syrup (2) because of that, people would've appreciated "Babe" more as an "expected gem". However, if there was high demand by fans and Styx members to release "Babe" as a 4th single, it would happen with "Why Me" as the B-Side. Under this scenario, I don't think "Babe" would've splintered the group that much.

I thought I was the only one that felt that way with the "Yes, No" parts - LOL

BUT, I did like hearing is live at Dennis' HOB show, I don't know why.

I'm glad things worked out for "Babe", it became their only number one hit. Things happen for a reason in life. Not sure if "First Time" would've made number 1, but I'm sure it would've been a hit, top 3 for sure during that time period.

Suite's post on Styx facts made me want to add a little extra info to this thread..

Incase anyone is interested, these are some of the positions of more recent Styx releases.

Greatest Hits 1995 #138 (Album Hot 200)
Return to Paradise #139
Brave New World #175- Top Internet #10
Cyclorama #127 -promotional single "Waiting For Our Time" #37 (Mainstream Rock)

Styx Anthology(Come Sail Away) #136
Big Bang Theory #46

As far as other promotional singles that were issued, the websites I've come across only mention the ones that charted, but at one point in time, there was a place online that listed all of the promo singles; here are the ones that I can remember(I think).

Little Suzie
It Takes Love
On My Way
Paradise
Dear John (these three from RTP may not be the order they were released; I remember reading somewhere that they almost issued "Dear John" as a commercial single, but the idea was canned.
Everything Is Cool
While There's Still Time
Number One(Again, these last two from BNW maybe out of order, but I'm pretty sure "Everything Is Cool" was first.)
Edge Of The Century(Live)
A Criminal Mind
Waiting For Our Time #37 (Mainstream Rock)
Yes I Can(I can't find any chart info for this one, but I think it might have done something on the Adult Contemporary)
These Are The Times(I don't know for sure on this one, but I remember reading- it may have even been on this site- that they were going to give this one a go)

Does anyone have the sales figures on these? I know GH was just certified double platinum. I have read it is nearing triple platinum.

Return to Paradise - Gold? I believe?

The others, I have no clue about.

And I wonder about DDY's Music of Styx.
