20 years from now

20 years from now, what bands of today do you think will still be considered viable bands producing some aspect of new music and still having some type of audience?

I guess Green Day is still young enough (33 average age) to be viable in 20 years. They have been around long enough (12 years since Dookie broke them through) to not just be a one hit wonder or a flavor of the day. I have all their albums and each one has been a little different and yet all were solid efforts.

I absolutely cannot think of a single group popular now, or even from the last 5 years or so, who will be around in 20 years.

Green Day was my first thought too because of the originality of their sound and their intelligent approach to music for the most part.

So much of the music today is ephemeral. It comes and goes so easily and does not stand the test of time.

There are influential groups, but they are not popular. And there are popular groups, but they are not influential.

Not a lot who fit the profile these days to stand the test of time.

I can't even think of any other bands from "today" that are going to be around in 20 years. I guess Green Day would be the only band that I could think of.

I wouldn't be surprised if Pearl Jam could make a run of it. Maybe REM and U2 as well. They are all still fairly young even if they aren't totally bands of "today".

so, if we all are right, unless there is a resurgence of Bands none of us have heard of yet, making music superior to the leading bands of today, rock as we know it will be dead within 20 years.........sad.

So I wonder what will take it's place ? I was at a car dealership last week and their radio was tuned to a country station.......the song playing ( sorry, I have asolutely no idea who it was ) had only a minimal amount of whatever it is that makes the country sound, it had a very catchy melody and words that were understandable & told a story.

I suspect people who listened to country 30-40 years ago wouldnt consider it country at all.........

not sure exactly what my point is, but maybe country will swipe many of todays rock listeners ???

Have you ever seen a movie with a really old person listening to big band music on a old record player, you know the kind with the funnel like the RCA dog would listen to. They sit and listen to music from the 40's because nobody else plays it, all the musicians are dead and it's the only thing that they have that connects them to a time in their lives they were happier.

Guess what? That's happened to practically every generation before and there is no reason to think it won't happen to us. But now the change is faster and is getting faster exponentially. Go look at the Billboard top 100 from just 5 years ago. I bet half the artists aren't even under contract anymore.

Enjoy the rock bands that are still out there playing. Their days are numbered and it ain't a big number anymore.

do you suppose our rooms at the nursing homes will have decent sound systems ? on the other hand, perhaps we'll all be deaf by then, and t wont matter !

I am playing a hunch but I think Bono, Springsteen, Gowan, and JY are going to form some sort of supergroup. The group will revolved around the singing prowess of all four of these superstars.

The Brewster who is such a wordsmith ' Dancing In The Dark' ( classic lyrics) will write the majority of their material.

I think many of us are saying the same thing. Progress makes everything faster and more instantaneous.

We cling to what makes us comfortable, and we all tend to look (or listen) to what is new and not find that comfort. It is typical of every generation. And I suspect it will always be that way.

Because we have adopted the immediate result and gratification attitude we have as a society, I don't think we will see many acts last as long in the business...but then I bet the generation before me said the same thing about our music.

I guess we will all have to stay tuned to see what stands the test of time...whether we like it or not.

Good post!!! I just took the top 5 (below), there are pretty many artists from 5 years ago aren't even around. I suppose in 20 years they won't even make records/cds anymore, especially with all this technology.
