Best Vocal Performances in Styx

Postby bugsymalone » Mon Jan 09, 2006 1:50 am

New (old??)topic. Maybe one for consideration again. What do you consider the best vocal performance on a recording of each of the individual singers in Styx? Beginnings through the present. But only within the context of being in the band.

Dennis – Golden Lark - I don’t like his exaggerated pronunciations, but his vocals range from low to high and he sounds perfect on every note. (Runner up – Paradise on the RTP CD)

Tommy – Never Say Never – Love how he sings this song despite some clunky lyrics.

JY – Double Life – One of his very best vocal performances in my book

John C - Mother Dear – I really love this song and love the vocals in it.

Glen – All in a Day’s Work - I think Glen portrays the emotions in this song beautifully.

Chuck P – Suite Madame Blue – Is there a better “America” sung anywhere, any time, than on the version on RTP???

John P – Is there a better “bus call” in all of rock and roll than in Movement for the Common man???

(I have left off Gowan and will defer to those who think he can sing to list a performance of his they consider his best with Styx 8) )

Bugsy
Change your hairdo. Change your name.
Congratulations! You're still the same.

Actually JY sings Lorelei now.

Gowan's a little eccentric perhaps, but I don't think he's flaming.

One performance I'd like to add is Tommy on Superstars. It just kills me when he nails that falsetto.

I take it the Secret Service didn't put you in jail. Good. I am also willing to bet, you didn't get close enough to Stupid to be considered for arrest.

Hope you are ok, Abs.

So I guess Glen has the highest % of songs, with almost all of his songs on the list. Better than any other member of the group.-ERIC

World Tonight! Yeah, that was a great one too! When we went to see Styx in 1991, my buddy, who'd never heard of Glen before that night, really liked that one alot.

I like all of JY's vocal work prior to Grand Illusion. I think it went downhill after that.

I like Dennis best on I'm OK, Grand Illusion, Rocking The Paradise, and especially Borrowed Time. I love the enthusiasm he brings to each of those songs. It's part of why I'm so disappointed that his musical tastes took the turn that they did, not that he doesn't sound terrific on the slower stuff or the other stuff I can't ever seem to classify (Lonely People, Roboto, etc)

My Glen fave is Love Is The Ritual from Styxworld.

I like Tommy's vocals on just about everything he sings.
