So if I'm going to see Styx at the Comstock Rock in July, this is what I'll hear?? Ek88, is this close to you??

I'm just kidding, yes, I know it's not the band's fault, or the management's fault or the promoter's fault, blah blah blah - LOL

I meant to post this a while back, but when Styx Syx played streetfest here in May, my brother went to see them too. A mutual friend couldn't get off work in time to see them and we all played golf the next day.

Our friend asked how the show was and of course we said he missed a great performance. But the wierd thing is my brother said, "yeah and the new guy sounds just like Dennis!"

Kinda blew me away.

for those casual fans who only know what dennis sounds like from the older original albums, then yes, you can understand how they think that lawrence sounds like dennis.

dennis even told us that if you compare to how he used to sound, especially how he sounded on the albums in the 70's-like he was plugging his nose, he can understand at times how the casual fan would say this.

Oh, it sure is, probably about a 2 hour drive or so, out in a pasture a few miles from a town with a whopping population of a few hundred. However, I don't know if I'd make this trip even if Dennis was along for the show. From what I hear it's not a very enjoyable experience. It's usually hot and muggy, and the crowd tends to overwhelm the local sewage facility. Mix that in with beer drinking and rock music and you can pretty much figure out the rest! There's virtually nowhere to stay at in the nearby vicinity, so you have to plan on bringing an RV or traveling a lot between days. Many RV air conditioning units conk out each year from extended use. Basically, if you're going, plan on being hot, sweaty, thirsty, and stinky for a couple of days!

Why would he do that? There's not much down there to burn...and believe me, I should know.

Gowan Sounds Like Dennis

Postby jimmy19029 » Fri Jan 13, 2006 9:54 am

I always thought Gowan was about as close as they were going to get if they were looking for someone who sounds similar. He hits the same notes and does have a similar style but is no carbon copy. When I first saw him I thought he sounded closer than he does now. I believe that was probably deliberate. Like when Jason Scheff first joined Chicago and producer David Foster would instruct him to "Sing as Cetera", when they were recording Chicago 18. Oddly enough, I think Gowan sounds erriely more like Dennis on his own Criminal Mind than he does on any of the other stuff.

I must have some really bad pressings of Cyclorama/Big Bang/and 21st Century Live, cus on my CD's they're about as similar as Art Garfunkel is to Steven Tyler.......or Steve Perry to Ozzy Obourne !!!

Time to upgrade the sound system evidently.

Well, Styx has played at a variety of facilities throughout the state in recents years (all much more pleasant than a pasture). I just wish Dennis would include Nebraska at least once in the near future, pasture or otherwise!
