John C - For the Styx Historians

Postby bugsymalone » Mon Feb 13, 2006 1:34 am

A good friend found this link to a page of photographs. One of the photos is of John Curulewski with the band he joined right after he left Styx. A group called Spread Eagle.

Interesting bit of history for those interested.

Whatever became of Spread Eagle??
Were they just a local midwest bar band?
Did they ever release anything?
Are there ANY recordings out there of ANYTHING they ever did?
Did anyone here ever see them perform??
They sure 'LOOK' like a 1970's band!!

I don't believe Spread Eagle ever made any recordings which was a shame.

I Know!!! SPread Eagle never released anything to the public. Is there anything out there? Maybe, maybe not. JC did have a recording studio and there may be some lost tapes somewhere but it is doubtful. They did not really tour and only played the Chicago area. This gave JC what he wanted -- time to rock out and time to spend with his family.

As far as I know (from reading interviews with his son Jamie), John never regretting leaving Styx because it gave him lots of time with his family.

He owned a recording studio in Chicago. He died in 1988 from an anurysm (sp).

So did ANY of you out there see this band perform?

Was J.C. the main singer, or were they like Styx with numerous vocalists?

Did they perform orginal material, or were they just basically a cover band??

A friend of mine by the name of Charlie was partners with JC in the recording studio. (He was also a roadie for Styx back in the early 70’s) I’ll give him a call and see what he knows. He may still have copies of some of the stuff they recorded back then. 8)
