Styx are mentioned in an article on 70s AOR bands in a new magazine, Classic Rock Metal Hammer-The 70s.
JY talks about their rivalry with REO in the Midwest. REO hit it big(in the Midwest) before Styx. "Then Grand Illusion made us TOP DOG. But then Hi Infidelity put them ahead of us again in the early 80s", he said. He also laughed and said Tommy still gets more attention from the female fans than he ever did. "I know most guys reading this won't have too much sympathy", he joked again. Now both groups are pretty close allies since they both experienced alot of the same things back then. The "parking lot full of whale vomit" comment once made by Rolling Stone in reference to Pieces of 8 is also mentioned.

Jimmy, which issue, the February one? Do you think Barnes & Noble has this magazine? I think this is another UK magazine. Thanks for the info.

Did REO really hit it big BEFORE Styx??? I don't think so.

Classic rock metal hammer is advertised in the classic rock magazine I buy.
It is not clear if it is a monthly issue or just some special edition for metal.
You must be able to get this at Borders or some sort of big box book store.

It's currently at Borders. It was just put on the stands last week. It'll probably be at Barnes & Noble too.
Styx certainly struck nationally before REO but REO broke big in the Midwest first when their first album came out in 1971, and the second album(in 1972) was even bigger there. Styx(as TW4) were big in Chicago but not quite the whole Midwest, at first. As Styx(from 1972 on) they began getting out and about. Styx then broke nationally WAY before REO. Styx II was their first Gold seller in 1975 and Lady was their first Top 40 hit. REO didn't hit Gold until Live, You Get What You Pay For in 1977. And their first Top 40 hit wasn't until late 1980 with Keep On Loving You.

Classic Rock is a monthly. But this Classic Rock Metal Hammer-The 70s is a special release by the same publishing company. Yes, it is from the U.K. And this mag costs $10.99. Whew! Mags are so expensive anymore! It has a black cover with white lettering.

Yeah, isn't it though. I usually buy the regular monthly Classic Rock magazine. It's not much cheaper at $8.99. It has some great articles and pictures though so it's usually hard to pass up. There was a good Styx article in one of last year's issues. Not sure if you saw that one. This other article we've been talking about is called, "when AOR Ruled The World and has a section on Journey, Styx, Foreigner, etc.

I am a faithful buyer of the Mag.Good cd reviews and great articles in general. There isn't much I don't read in and find it well written.
I hang on to them and am going through the lot now a second time.
So all in all,,,,,good value for me.
