What are your picks for the "best" 5 consecutive albums by an artist - excluding live albums.

This is from another forum that I'm on. Since we all like different music, I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone chooses.

Mental Jewelry by Live is a great album. It gets a bit preachy in parts tho ... of course all Live albums are that way. I actually grew up in a rival high school from the guys in Live. They went to William Penn high school in York, PA and I was in a nearby private school. Their original name was Public Affection.... made me wanna puke at the time

I saw them as Public Affection at a local radio station battle of the bands about the time of the first gulf war and Kowalczyk was going on about his "arab brothers" and how he loved them and what not... obviously they did not win the competition.

I think some folks didn't understand the assignment - its 5 CONSECUTIVE albums

(Styx was at the top of their game during these 5, despite the Kilroy controversy - these albums in total contain their best songs.)

Yes, I guess I didn't read that part. If that's the case, I have no list. I don't think any 5 of Styx's best albums were consecutive. :-D

Simply untouchable.

Zan, I'm a little surprised that you have PF's The Final Cut rated so high, above even DSOTM and The Wall. I'm guessing you are of the opinion that it isnt Floyd without Roger ? I'm more of a Dave Fan, but respect the opinions of those who disagree with me on it. Roger is Brilliant , no doubt about it. TFC was too dark for me though.

Final Cut is very dark, but it's brilliant. Some of the best lyrics ever written are all over that album.

I am a HUGE Gilmour fan - he's my favorite guitarist of all time, and I could go on & on about him all day long. I just happen to like FC the best collectively of all PF's albums, mainly because of the content and the emotion in it.

And just an FYI: I don't think ANY one member of ANY band *is* that band, regardless of who they are. ;-)

I think those first two were the all time best Beatle Albums. Nothing wrong with Let It Be, and Abbey Road is another Masterpiece.

I admit, I have been pretty poor about buying new(er) material from favorite artists of mine. The last 2 Live albums, 3 Matchbox 20, and so on. So no, I haven't heard it. I have no doubt that it's phenomenal. That said, it never surprises me when artists turn "soft." It seems to be a trend to write more ballads and mellow songs with time. It is disappointing, but I understand why they might want to play that sorta stuff.

You have it?

Hey thanks!

We are playing the title track and we ran a special the week it came out and I heard a couple of the tunes. My program director got the full cd last week and he was a little disappointed in how it dragged. He just couldn't get into it. At least find the title track and give a listen, it's pretty damn good. Grahm Nash and David Crosby on back ground give it a cool vibe.

This topic is very thought provoking.....hard to argue with those of you who included Revolver and Rubber Sould on the early side of a 5 Album Beatles run........

And Kansas.......thats a pretty awesome run of 5 of your namesake too
If I were to pick a run of 5 FLoyd CD's, I'd include Meddle over The Final Cut.......( Sorry Zan...though you have inspired me to give TFC another spin soon....)

Deano, you have a lot of company in placing Springsteen on a pedestal, but I just cant get into his music that much besides Born to Run ( the song, not the CD ) he writes a great Lyric, but his delivery just doesnt do it for me, at least not on the level we are talking here.

Zan, I picked up DG's "on an Island" almost immediately, I agree with the 1st track being the best.....I wish he haved cut loose on the guitar more, but I'll gladly take anything he has to offer these days.....its been over 10 years since The Division Bell, and over 20 since his last solo effort. On an Island reminds me a bit of PF's Meddle........you have to be in the mood for it, but when you are its damn good !

I only wish I had the disposable income to see his live show in Chicago....$125 a ticket means I'll have to cross my fingers for a DVD.

I was telling someone the other week, when my friend's self-proclaimed "Floyd fan" husband *actually* asked "who is David Gilmour..."

...We got to talking about Pink Floyd and how the dynamics of Waters and Gilmour worked so well. I don't think, as intense as Waters' lyrics are, that the music would have been delivered with the same intensity if they had been played by another guitarist. Gilmour simply makes his guitar feel what he is playing all the time. And his execution is flawless.

You should definitely give it another listen. I admit, I discovered it during one of my more dark times in life, so I'm biased, but the album is great. The Gunner's Dream is my favorite.
