Which one is STYX?

You're right Monker. I am a follower.

Well, at least you admit it.

I also agree that Dennis' jokes can be a bit hacky. I don't see his shows for the jokes. I go for the music.

That's too bad, since he talks almost as much as Kevin Cronin.

Also, I do not want Dennis to get back with the other members of Styx, so why should I be a "leader" to make this happen?

Because that is the only version of Styx that matters.

[quyote]He was thrown out of Styx and if you look at it from the Styx point of view they feel justified as to why they kicked him out.[/quote]

So? You may feel justified to cheat on your taxes...but that doesn't make it right.

If things were that difficult for all of them to work together, and it wasn't going to produce positive results, then it is probably best they don't work together.

Then it is also best that Styx disband and Dennis stop covering Styx songs.

Even if there is some sort of reunion in the future, the pain caused by all of the ill feelings toward each other will probably harbor some resentment.

So what? At least it will be the real Styx.

If there's still that resentment, then how can they have the energy as a unified group to work together?

They will have that magic power of the music inside of them.

Since Dennis was kicked out, and he had spent his entire life building up Styx as a brand as a performer, what do you expect him to do after being thrown out?

I expect him to work on Hunchback, get it on PBS, and tour behind that music only. I don't believe anything he has ever done, including Styx, is as important and exciting to him as Hunchback. The only reason he continues to do Styx is because he can't sell tickets without that music.

He needed a band, and he had none.

Yeah, and who does he hire? Some guy named TOMMY? Gee, how ironic...riiiiigggght. Sorry, but he's not fooling anybody by his band of posers.

By the way, your "example" of critisizing what another person likes/dislikes is wrong: All you did was say why you don't like what Dennis does, which is fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. It's when you say "I think _______ is an a****** (or a "follower" in a derogatory manner) for thinking the way that they do" that you cross the line.

Ok, well, you're a follower. There, I crossed the line. See, I have the 'right' to do it.

And if your change in your sig. line is directed at me than so be it. I have better things to do in my life than to put up with the "bully of the message board" and will get the heck out of here and return posting at friendlier sites.

LOL...I have not changed it in MONTHS. I'm getting tired of it though, and should probably change it.

I just watched a DVD of on of Dennis' Music of Styx shows. I have to vent on the guitar player. His tone was pure vanilla, he didn't do a great job covering parts, (fretboard tapping in the outro of CSA?) and he wore his guitar way to high for someone playing rock. Is he the same guy who played on Dennis' solo stuff?

Oh yes, the drummer wasn't that great either. He missed some beats that shouldn't be missed. He wouldn't qualify to hold Todd's stick bag.

On the flip side Dennis sang pretty well although his voice consistently has trouble on a couple of notes. I would like to see him play the piano or other keyboards more. I kind of wish his wife would stay off the stage. Dennis hired some epic backup singers and his wife just doesn't fit for some reason.

Shaka,

The guitar player (Tommy) has been with Dennis since his solo career began. He really is primarily a studio musician who has come on the road with Dennis.

He also is trying to cover 2 guitar parts by himself. The missing guitar is probably the most criticism Dennis gets about his sound.

That said, now that Dennis is on the road more, Tommy has become a bigger presence and stage personna.

Dennis is still the star of his show and the others are in the background. Probably always will be.

My first guess was that he was a studio guy. I think he plays decent but there's something lacking that can't be explained by one person attempting to cover two parts. And he needs to lower that guitar RIGHT NOW!!!!

lol

I'm actually thinking about traveling to take in one of the shows. I would like to feel the vibe live and see if it changes my opinion.

A lot of Studio Musicians play with their guitars way up. It's because many of them play sitting down or on a stool.

If you catch a DDY show, don't expect the same show that Styx put on. But Dennis is still rocking some. And all the songs you hear will be ones you never hear Styx do today.

Then I also have the 'right' to say you are very narrow-minded *** *** ** ***** and a bunch of other things that personally I am too polite to post. Use your imagination.

I AM a studio musician and that's why I would have guessed that he was a studio guy. But that's why you don't take some guys out on the road. lol

Ignore me, I'm just being a music snob.

I still think it's as simple as go see Styx (in their current incarnation) if you like them and go see Deenis if you like what he's doing. If you don't, don't. Obviously, everyone is free to post whatever they want, but it's doubtful that any existing opinions concerning DDY/Styx are going to change.

After seeing STYX at a local club here in Charleston, exactly a week ago tonight, I would have to say the current lineup, Tommy Shaw, JY, Gowan, Phillips and Sucherman (we also had Chuck Panozzo at our show playing on 4 songs) is an excellent lineup for Styx.
Got to hear every STYX song I loved, only missing a couple of DDY songs, Best of Times, Babe and First Time. (of which Only Best of Times did I personally miss)
Tommy voice sounds great after all these years (which you can't say for many vocalists singing practically non-stop since the 70's.) JY sounds good and Gowan does respectable, if not good versions of the DDY songs in the set.

Saw DDY here doing a symphony show a few months ago and I'll take the current STYX lineup over a DDY show any day.....
