Hello Friends,
After an overnight drive from Burlington, Iowa, I awoke to find Lawrence heading down the hallway to the rear lounge with his coffee cup in hand, preparing to brew up his morning espresso. He and George were already up watching World Cup Soccer. I rolled out of bed, got in line at the espresso maker and made myself a vanilla soy latte, then headed out to the front lounge and noticed we were just coming through the Shenandoah Valley. No matter how many times you see it, this picturesque panorama makes you stop in your tracks to try and take it all in before it passes. What a great thing to see first thing in the morning.
We've had an incredible stretch of shows coming off of our CYO concert. From Fargo to Burlington, every night has been so intense, it reminds me of last night's Stanle Cup Final. Edmonton, despite being shorthanded, was playing as if their lives depended upon it (their teams honor was very much involved). Everything they had they put into it. That's what it feels like out here. Can't explain it, but we're all loving it. I guess every so often you get a glimpse of what's possible if you do that corny thing "Live every day as if it's your last..." Do that once and then you'l realize that you had more in you than you realized. We've always throuwn down every night, but after the CYO show we realized that there was even more horsepower under the band's hood, so we've been putting the pedal to the metal.
One of the many great things about continuing onward with STYX for the last seven years, is that all of our energy and resources are about the music, the performing, and the road ahead. These chapters of STYX history find us able to focus on subjects, such as CYO, Willie Dixon's 2120 business, charitable events, etc., and other creative ventures outside our own inner circle. The growth of the band has been remarkable and to see a whole new generation of fans join the ranks of our most loyal followers from the early days makes getting out there on stage something that still raises the little hairs on our necks. To think that we considered rock to be only something for 20 somethings so long ago!
Now we're moments away from heading to the gig, then to the next town to do it again, four in a row before we head to the West Coast. This is still the life.
