That is what my STYX BOYCOTT 2006 is all about
You can't boycott Dennis he is a solo artist it will not matter
THE STYX name is being dragged through the mud thats where you stop giving your hard earned buck
DEMAND perfection from STYX and that means Gowan and Rickie must go.
Yes, but there are boycotters on both sides of the fence and have been since 1999. There are some who 100% support Styx in its current incarnation, some just Dennis, some both. Heck, a few of the Styx shows I've been to some people still think DDY is still in the band and are surprised to find out they not only won't be seeing him, but won't be hearing songs like "Babe" and "The Best of Times". If you don't want to see Styx, don't. But to create threads on it and ask people to join in the fray is ridiculous. People will do what they want. I respect all people's views whether they shun Styx as it is now, DDY on his own, or both. Neither side are angels in this silly soap opera, but I think both camps are realizing now that they need to move on. DDY's talk before "Come Sail Away" has softened in the past year or year and a half, and he is much more conciliatory in interviews. Tommy has shut up. Someone just needs to tell JY that bashing Dennis and saying the same old, same old is tired at this point. The reality is that from a songwriting point of view, he never was going to get the royalties because he had none of the major hits. It is Dennis or Tommy. So JY's income has to be largely based on touring with/as Styx. With DDY wanting to only do limited touring, it hurts his bottom line. Tommy had other outlets potentially available (he did a brief solo tour for 7DZ and Damn Yankees lurks from time to time). JY has Styx, and can maybe do some small club dates - emphasis on maybe. So I can understand his venom, but I think he needs to think about the time when at some point he and Dennis may have to work together again.
Yes, we didn't live with Dennis as a bandmate and maybe he was impossible on some levels to deal with. But in a rock group that had as much success as Styx at one point, do you think he was the only ego? Tommy was no picnic when he was on drugs and pissed of. Remeber when he smashed his hand/arm and delayed part of the Kilroy tour? Dennis may have been the most dominant, but it was all well and good when the cash was coming in during the late 70s and 80s to put up with it. They had a chance to change Styx history when they fired Dennis in 1979. They didn't. They rode the cash cow. So JY and Tommy to some degree are to blame for putting up with Dennis up until the point they parted ways in 1999.
And name me a reunited band that you haven't heard rumors behind the scenes that they really don't get along, and the initial good feeling of getting back together turned into all the old crap over time? I mean, come on, get real. Do you think all bands that are still together are best friends? No. I would argue most are business arrangements. I think Rush is the one example where they've managed to stay friends who happen to need some distance between tours and albums.
Gowan has his moments; personally, I'm not a fan of his version of "Come Sail Away", but I'll say this: I applaud Styx for not getting a look alike/sound alike. See where it landed Journey?
As for Ricky Phillips, as with Glen, he's a hired hand (well, as are Gowan and Todd, and probably Chuck at this point; Styx I would guess legally is Tommy and JY) who does backing vox and plays bass, and may contribute some songwriting to their next effort. Big deal. He's not the front man. He's no more important to Styx than Hank is to Dennis in my eyes.
