Talked to a friend of mine who went to this fest and saw Dennis
She said there was about 10 thousand people at this show.
During Sail Away she said it was bone chilling all 10 thousand people sang the entire song almost without Dennis having to sing

Sounds like it was a great show.
The crowd makes the show thats for sure,

At this point these double bills aren't so much opening/closing acts anymore, especially since they get nearly equal stage time.

This is hardly a double bill. This is a 4 day classic rock festival. Denny didn't pull in 10,000 people.

7:00 The Guess Who
4:30 Little River Band
3:00 Black Valentine

11:00 Alice Cooper
9:00 Ted Nugent
7:00 Santana's Gregg Rolie
4:30 Starship featuring Mickey Thomas
3:00 Mountain Ash

11:00 Poison
9:00 The Bangles
7:00 Kenny WayneShepherd
4:30 Outlaws
3:00 Mark Anthony's Storm Project

11:15 Heart
9:00 Doobie Brothers
7:00 John Kay & Steppenwolf
4:30 Y&T

I think at this point and time any, and i hate to use this term, way a 'nostalgia' act can get in front of 10,000 people is fine. Who cares if it's a Quad bill or a festival, truth is if you added those acts up if they performed seperately, you'd lucky to sniff 10,000.

But what I don't get is the Doobies 'opening' for Heart. I mean, I like Heart and all, but as a show closer over the Doobies? No way, no how. I do wonder how many Poison fans liked listening to the Bangles while they held their places. :D

I've been to a fest like this a few years ago. People camp out there for four days and get to see all the acts for one price. Styx played one in Wisconsin 2 years ago. There were 25,000 people there. 8)

You could get a 4 day pass to Moondance for $90.00 That breaks down to about $5.62 to see DDY. Although the show in Chicago was free and the crowd was very small.

How is Canada doing for Styx these days? They broke 5000 combined CD sales for their last two albums up there yet Chicago? I sold more copies of Tony Carey's greatest hits record to Canada than Styx did of Cyclorama -- and I was an indie label with zero pub.

Ash,

Do album sales really matter any more to bands of STYX's age. By and large teens buy cd's, not adults. Always has been that way. While both sides are trying to court younger fans, neither side is selling albums to them. They download the music and that doesn't go into album sales.

No it doesn't bud, and my comments aren't really aimed at the actual argument. It's just an absurd attempt at pointing out how absurd some people can be by constantly comparing sales figures and concert sales. SO whenever certain people do it and raise their "stock critiques" I feel obligated to respond in kind. I way past the point of arguing it really, it's more just doing to demonstrate how stupid it really is to keep saying it on either side.

I totally agree. I personally backed off of the sales figures and comparing each of the camps.

BUT I will add something. At the Dennis concert in Rice Lake, I'd have to say over half of the crowd was under 25 and not even born when Paradise Theater came out. I was shocked to see and hear them sing every song, except for the Edge song.

At Summerfest to see Styx I was very shocked to see 3/4 of the crowd 25 and under. When that Walrus song came on, the whole crowd sung to that song and that song is WAY older than the Styx songs and yet everyone knew that crazy song word for word.

Are you kidding me?! Heart should close over the Doobies(and most of the others on that long list) EVERY day of the week!! The Wilson sisters are a force to reckon with. Tom Johnston? Half the crowd wouldn't know his name...

Angie,

I would never kid you.

But the Doobies do have a Diamond certified album and probably have more 'recongnizable' songs. Don't get me wrong, I have more Heart albums (5) than Doobies (2). I probably like the body of work by Heart better too, but I think (think) that the Doobies are more popular with the masses. Was I the only person that bought 'Back to Avalon'?

Ash was right, people probably don't know Johnston, but they do know Listen to the Music, China Grove and Long Train Running. I am not arguing whether or not 'the sisters' are a force, just whether or not they are more popular.

Maybe 'the sisters' could team up with 'the brothers' and form Heart Halen, now that may be something indeed. :D

With froy always being helpful with info re Styx, or lack of it ,the least we can do is being helpful with the info on Dennis or the lack of it.

Can I get a tally on all of those who agree that at this point in the band's/Dennis' careers that arguing over ticket sales, attendance, or costs thereof is not as important as how much fun any of us have at these shows?

Can I also get a tally on those who shudder at the thought of Froy in a speedo? *g*

I met Froy (Mike) at the Taste Of Chicago when we saw Dennis and he doesn't look disgusting or fat at all, as a matter of fact I thought he was kinda handsome (sorry Mike)
